  1. Evening Mr Pollard, I think the tributes that have flooded everywhere all over the world for Levi Stubbs have highlighted the quality of the Four Tops catalogue, has confirmed their status as many people's favourite group and that Mr Stubbs himself is ranked up with, if not above, the very best of his peers. Now that's a helluva statement to make when you consider the quality of his peers. For most, just to be mentioned in the same breath as Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Ray Pollard etc would be a thrill. But to mention Mr Stubbs in this company, even as an equal, somehow doesn't quite seem enough. I'm pretty sure that if you believe in this type of thing that Lawrence, Obie and I daresay a few other Motowners were there to greet him on his final journey and I've no doubt the aforementioned singers stood to one side with the words...."Gods band has a new lead singer....move over guys....Levi's here". The one thing that I think would make him smile tonight is the fact that all over the world people are playing Four Tops records, his songs and HIS songs they certainly were. Penned by Holland Dozier Holland etc but beautifully crafted by the magic that was "The Voice" Mr Levi Stubbs. The greatest soul singer the world has ever known. Gone yes.....but celebrated for many years to come yet.
  2. Post removed. Didn't see Tony's post. Erma's release was also on Brunswick - not Duke.
  3. The smile on your face is more important than the style of your feet. (Or anything else for that matter).
  4. QUOTE: More chance of finding soul 45s in New Dheli than in Orlando! :UNQUOTE
  5. Can someone clarify whether this came out as a promo only? It was released the same time as the unreleased/alt takes Connoiseur stuff that Tim and Martin put out after Martin had rummaged the Solid Hitbound tapes. I have them all. ALL are great quality Detroit tracks including a fantastic outing by L V Johnson called Recipe. (I think that is a Sevens 45 too). Were all the outings doen on White label demos or just: Edwin Starr Sharon Soul M Davis and S Mancha These are the only ones I've managed to find on promos.
  6. At these times I tend to look back at the work left behind and try to avoid the sadness of the occasion. Have to admit that this time that was difficult. Losing Mr Stubbs is like losing a family friend. He came into my life as I first discovered this music and stayed with me right up until yesterday when I was playing one of the Four Tops French EPs and still enjoying the wonderment of his unique vocal. I don't think anyone could match his vocal delivery for soul content, and that's a helluva statement to make when you consider the array of talent to choose from. I'm sure tonight, Levi, Lawrence and Obie will be reliving the years they spent giving so much pleasure to so many people. And after such a battle against his illness who on Earth would begrudge them a minute of it? So.......Sleep well Mr Levi Stubbs....and please accept congratulations on a job done to such a standard that it became the yardstick for many to try and attain...but NONE could actually achieve. Soul Perfection.
  7. The combination of Linda and George Kerr (professionally at least), was a match made in heaven. Almost all her songs are on home made CDs I use in the car. The iconic "Just Can't Live My Life" is monumental and when she initially kicks in on the classic "I'm So Glad I Found You" you can sense the Moments gulping in awe! But for me it's the LP only track "If We Had Met Sooner" that does it every time. Not as 'passioned' vocally as some of her other outings but it's the way she keeps something back, the fact that you just KNOW she could explode at any time but stays in complete control from the opening bars to the final flourish. As they say round these parts.....FANTASTICO!
  8. The Volumes....Wey Hey! Count me in for that one for sure. All original members?
  9. Once again, it was just a series of half remembered cliches strung together. The only thing missing though was Norman Wisdom chasing Mr Grimsdale! It's irrelevant to my world, no one's gonna die and it ain't threatening my way of life. If Liam and Co wanna make gimps of themselves on TV that's their business. The phrase "Dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants" does however seem to be becoming more and more applicable. Like I say, what folks do is their business. Storm in a teacup.

  11. Hi Mossy, I'm extremely grateful. Appreciate it Mate. Thanks Phillipe but the Pic Sleeve is not of the necessary resolution so if anyone can help with a good quality scan I'd be very grateful.
  12. Can anyone confirm yet that there are either two demos of the Tuba release or that there is actually a W/D? Scan if possible chaps.
  13. Yep, Good to put faces to names eh? Rekkid chat is always high up on our agenda and it was a good session on Friday afternoon in the bar. Hope your Mrs was happy with your attentiveness over the weekend and your back in the good books! Agents is still in sales box if you're interested.

  15. You folks must all be hard of hearing...... Marvin Gaye - What's Going On - Tamla By a country mile.
  16. I'm on the beg again folks, Has anyone got a nice scan of Lou Johnson's UK London EP? Was this released in Europe somewhere too? Also...does anyone know who has the acetate LP with his version of "The Panic Is On' on it? As usual any help is greatly appreciated.
  17. Shute, If you dropped a bollock, simply pull it and explain to the bidder you made a mistake. Everyone drops a clanger now and then. Long as your honest about it I'd be happy to withdraw a bid I had on.
  18. I'm pretty sure you do yes.
  19. Derek's correct. As a BIN all you are offering is a buyer the opportunity to buy it without going through the auction process prior to anyone else bidding. Once a bid is placed the auction goes live so to speak and the 'buy it now' facility is defunct. At least that's how I've always understood the process.
  20. Philip Mitchell and he were friends though, maybe that's why the mix up.
  21. Reminds me of the Fork Handles (Four Candles) two Ronnies sketch at times!
  22. Man! I never knew that! Has anyone got a pic of him?
  23. Soulville Allstars were an interacial band.
  24. The provenance of the song and it's different variants by different vocalists is told in Issue # 5 of There's That Beat! I think back issues are still available of this issue at THERES THAT BEAT One of Johnny Brantley's finest moments. Great song.
