Any Chess Experts Out There?
That's the thing......where did you get the info from? They are documented on some Chicago outings but is/are there some references, (even if anecdotal), of any Chess recording sessions? Or are we all relying on our ears?

Any Chess Experts Out There?
Hi Tony, It's been a while since I read "Spinning" so I'll dig it out. Can't remember any reference to Detroit musicians though. Thanks for the reminder.

Any Chess Experts Out There?
Is there any way of identifying who played on what for Chess in the mid sixties? With such a prolific catalogue and such a diverse A&R rosta, in terms of genre and styles, surely it couldn't be the same guys all the time like Gordy had at Motown? I know that Leonard Caston, Maurice White, Louis Satterfield, Phil Upchurch, Gene Barge, Brice Robertson, Gerald Sims, Ray Miner etc were all part of a loose collection of musicians that have since been classed as the 'house band", but if you listen to things like: The Valentinos - "Sweeter Than The Day Before" or Tony Clark - "Landslide" There's no Chicago signature to these tracks. It's obvious (at least to these old tired lugs), that the Chicago 'sound' has been replaced by the Detroit 'sound'. With Billy Davis at the helm by the early/mid sixties and his solid Detroit background coupled with the fact that it's well know that many of the Detroit musicians would trundle up the Windy City on a regular basis, I'm wondering if there is any documentary evidence to establish who was in the studio when these types of recordings were made. Any help appreciated, even if it's just a pointer towards a book or a CD. TIA.

Most Soulful And Least Soulful Lnsrumental
I'm afraid that's a common misconception Dave. MFSB are definitely NOT the musicians on the track. There was actually a group of youngsters who played this. See the Jerry Ross feature in There's That Beat! There's a pic and a little story about them, along with Father Angelo who was responsible for them getting together.

The Soul 45
The Supremes "He's All I Got" is the flip to "Love Is Like An Itching...." I only collect US Motown DEMOs so we'll have to scrub that one too chaps as it's a double sided Demo. My apologies. I will however submit a substitute if that's OK: Olympics - Baby Do The Philly Dog - Mirwood/Fontana

Ted Jarrett Passes
Another music legend has shaken off his mortal coil. He made it to 83 and manage to enjoy his success. Good on him! Farewell and congratulations Mr Jarrett on a job extremely well done Sir. For his bio click HERE

Rip.uriel Jones
As time catches up with many of our legends the music they left behind becomes a beacon for their lives. Not many can claim to have touched the lives of people all over the world and Mr Jones belongs to that special group that certainly can. I'll crack a cold one tonight, dig a few of his performances out and celebrate "The Sound Of Young America" as only he and his snakepit compatriots could create. Sleep well Mr Jones Sir, and many congratulations on a job extremely well done.

Best Online Radio Show?
Hey Up Mucker, 'fraid I dropped a bollock with the software last year and only one show turned out, even that was poor quality. Have new software this year and of course the Saturday will be given over to a slurps and the odd Smashey and Nicey hour or so!

Hi Pete, I have some sheet music and a full page Billboard ad somewhere. Would a scan or print be any use to you Pete? Ta David F- Magnetics, This Is How It Should Be Done
Yep, 2 members of the Volumes were part of the Detroit Magnetics. Mark Speakman had a great photo with the two of them and the Bonnie disc. Nice!- Magnetics, This Is How It Should Be Done
Beggars Can't Be Choosers Try Let Our Love Grow Higher And very nice it was too!- Magnetics, This Is How It Should Be Done
Just Can't Help Myself Gotta Give Her Love I Love You Aint Gonna Give You Up Heart You Made Of Stone Lady In Green Same Old Feeling They were good. In fact they were really good. Sounded tight, timing was on, nice pitch, the guys can still do it. Ranks up with seeing The Masqueraders and The Precisions. Eula Cooper - Lots of stage prescence, confident and sounded good. Lenis Guess - Great rendition of his classic. Benny Troy - Bit of turn up for the book. Guy pulled off a great song and did it with style. Bobby Patterson - Consummate showman. Songwriter extraordinaire and sounded great. Big well done to all concerned. I thought the blend of artists was good too. Top show all round.- There's That Beat! New Issue
Mags should be dropping now. Tried to get them all done before Prestatyn while we're here in UK. Also have binders now and they went like hot cakes at Prestatyn so if anyone wants one I'd grab one quick. I'll post details up once Bev works out the postage etc.- Mel Britt Original For Sale

Will pop a scan and actual soundfile when I can early next week. folks can bid by PM or to hitsville2648@earthlink.net- Ric-tic Question - Thoughts?
Hi Jean Paul, The W/Demo of AO-O Soul is hard to find in really good condition. They are around but the ones you see are usually rough. I'd rate it at 100UKP in good nick.- Can Anyone Help This Artists
Hi Mark, Nice gesture. But I think Ed is happy to pay for the discs, it's just a case of locating them and pointing him in the right direction. Can you believe this.....he lived 5 miles from me for 5 years! STRANGE world of Northern Soul.- Can Anyone Help This Artists
Here's a message I received today from songwriter Eddie Johnson. Can anyone help him out? If nyone has any 45s that they're wiling to donate to the original writer I'm sure he'd be most appreciative. I can be contacted at hitsville2648@earthlink.net Sir, I happened to see the magazine "There's That Beat" September 2007 regarding Johnny Brantley / The Adventurers / The Chosen Few. My name is Edward (Eddie Johnson) and I was an original member and songwriter in the Adventurers. Johnny produced the group (The Adventurers) after we left Columbia Records. Our album there was Can't Stop Twistin." I read with great interest your accounting of my group and you are correct in that The Chosen Few grew from the Adventurers. You are also correct in that the songs on Compass, Music World and Maple Records basically stemmed from the Adventurers. Thank you for recognizing Gerald Perry and myself as writers for much of the recorded material. I also found it amazing that our material had made a small dent in the U.K..I had no idea that our album had been redone on the Phillips Label. My question for you is, where might I find copies of our records for purchase. Unfortunately, I lost all of my materials (records, unpublished songs and demos) in a fire in the mid eighties. I would love to get my hands on the records and albums for both The Adventurers and The Chosen Few. As a person that appreciates music, I'm sure you understand how important it is for me to find access to my materials, if possible. Thanking you in advance......... Eddie Johnson- Little Anthony & The Imperials
He He! I've seen 'em before....I know how good they are!- Little Anthony & The Imperials
I thought this was Ruby Andrews and The Falcons appearing. Are you saying that Little Anthony and The Imperials are also appearing at this event? Jeeze, that's only six weeks away. Best get mi skates on. Where do we get tickets? How much are they? Is there a website or booking procedure we need to go to through? Nearest Airport? - The O'kaysions - Girl Watcher - Stateside Uk Green/white Demo
