  1. Well done Gareth. Give the man a ceegar. It is indeed the writer of IFWYW. He also wrote "You Didn't say a Word" amongst his treasure trove of credits. Looking coooool Billy! Regards, Dave
  2. I'll not let the cat out of the back yet but they certainly are Philly heavyweights. Messrs Madara and and White are there for sure. The black guy wrote two of Northern soul's most anthemic songs amongst his repertoire. Regards, Dave
  3. This fantastic pic was posted on Facebook by one of the guys in the pic. It must be pretty unique as I've never seen a pic of these guys together - EVER. This is the best Photo I've seen in a decade. Just for fun can anyone ID them?
  4. Each too his own eh? Rixy at his peak in the early 90s was one of the few collector/DJs that could get me on a plane to UK. Greety can still get me sniffin' in interest as to what he's currently playing. As can Karl Heard. Regards, Dave
  5. We'll discount Andy Rix, Ady Croasdale, Clarkie, Dave Greet etc then Regards, Dave
  6. Sassy. If you check the Sassy issue it rightly credits Billy Jackson as the writer whereas the later Gamble issue credits........err Mr Gamble. Regards, Dave
  7. Mint styrene every time for me. Longevity isn't a problem unless it's been battered by some Northern Soul "DJ" every weekend for 40 years! I've owned Mint styrene records for over 30 years and they're still Mint. In fact I much prefer, and collect, the Motown styrene Map design demo presses over the boring vinyl ones. Regards, Dave
  8. Mick, Do you know which take it is? The original on GM was released in US and it's that take that was released originally in UK on Ember. It was then later released on Bulldog with a different (better?) take. That Greek Melody copy is a nice looker eh? Regards, Dave
  9. Chris, Is the poster signed by both Chris and Sandi? That's a cool piece of memorabelia Mate. Nice one. Regards, Dave
  10. Without Gordy there would maybe not be these 'crumbs' you refer too though. Arctic in Philly were certainly trying to emulate Gordy's success, to the point that they actually turned up there to record tracks hoping the magic would rub off. The myriad of Detroit based labels at some point had musicians from Hitsville moonlighting (same as Chess in Chicago: Tony Clarke's "Landslide" has Motown stamped all over it!) and many of the owner/operators actually were ex Motown Staffers. The obvious ones being HDH at Invictus. Mike Terry tuned his skillset whilst working in the Snakepit, as did Popcorn Wylie, Joe Hunter, Dennis Coffey, Norman Whitfield, Mickey Stevenson etc etc. Mrs Gordy was a direct influence on the Shrine imprint in DC and the likes of LeBaron Taylor's Revilot, Ed Wingate's Golden World and certainly the Pied Piper set up owe more than a passing nod to the "Sound Of Young America". I'm not claiming that these labels would not have succeeded on their own, without the influence of Gordy's imprint but we'll never really know that. But in just this short passage we've identified that the tentacles of Motown have stretched to Philly, Chicago, all over Michigan, Washington and we've not even mentioned LA or NY yet. So.. to return to the question.....I would venture that the UK Northern Scene may well have developed without Motown but it'd sure be a different 'scene' musically than it is today. Regards, Dave
  11. If you bought a car and it came banged and dented when the seller had told you it was almost perfetct, would you not complain? Buying records is no different to buying anything else. Mint- means MINT -. No ambiguity there, no, 'it's a personal thing' it's Mint -. that means it should look perfect in daylight but maybe have some marks under a strong light. Gouges? Unplayable B Side? Someone trying to shift a crap copy for 'book price' seems to me. Me...I'd send it back and buy another 'proper' one. Regards, Dave
  12. Hi Tony, I remember once seeing a Ronnie McNier - Sitting In My Class - DeTo White Demo on there too! I think Lowell used to use a little 'poetic licence'. Great site originally but seems to have gone astray somewhat since the big split. Regards, Dave
  13. I think there was a mock up LT on LaBeat W/Demo on the SoulfulDetroitForum site at one time a few years ago. I made some enquiries then but no one seem to know anything about it. It's the same with the Frank Wilson Stocker and the Don Varner Veep W/Demo, once someone sees them on the web they'll swear blind they've seen a real one! Regards, Dave
  14. Anyone got any info on The Lollipops track? Regards, Dave
  15. Bravo Jocko, Been called lots of things over the years but sainted ain't been one of them! Regards, Dave
  16. Sad? No No No. That's not the way I say goodbye to these legends: Mr Fuqua left a legacy that many of us would give our right arm for. The epitome of cool! Sharp suits, processed hair do, neat shirt and tie. His music involvement spans the whole spectrum of the second half of the 20th Century! He was partner to Alan Freed for a while and his list of collaboration reads like a Black Music Who's Who. His involvement in the early Motown set us is well documented and his continued contribution to Gordy's empire has always been acknowledged. He rescued Marvin Gaye from the depths of drug induced despair and created a Grammy winning album with him. He was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame before he passed and I've no doubt he had a wry smile as he he accepted that honour. Mr Fuqua...step forward and take a well deserved bow and accept these congratulations on a job extremely well done Sir! Regards, Dave
  17. I've had a few PM's so I just need to qualify part of my post: I don't care at all what people wear. In fact I quite like the spunky way that some of the 'retro luvvers' stand their ground. (Debbie's like a retro Rottwieler!) And I do struggle with the concept of people who wear clothes 50 years old (imitation mod clothing), thinking people who wear clothes 40 years old, (baggies and vests etc), are divvies. It's certainly not for me to me to criticise ANYONE for anything they do. I was simply pointing out that all the events of the last 35 years that the doom and gloom merchants would have us believe is the end of the soul scene as we know ,actually haven't affected my enjoyment of soul music and I doubt anything in the next 35 years will either. (Although I would dearly love to see the return to the likes of Andy Rix et al DJing). By the same token: If people want to grab their 15 minutes of fame and a few quid on the back of a scene that has given me a lifetime of pleasure that's their perogative. It's certainly not my place to criticise them for it and if that came accross it wasn't meant to. I do what I do, I don't expect people to criticise me for having less than a passing interest in the latest 'hip' venue, the latest young 'family influenced' DJ or the latest chart bound teenage soul soundalike. By the same token I wouldn't expect the majority of this forum to enjoy dissecting the vocal inflections of Billy Stewart (which is what I spent the afternoon doing!). LOL! So...it's a film. No more no less. Some will get their knickers in a twist because the colour of the Casino roof wasn't accurate and some, (like me), will treat it as soul irrelevancy #175467B. Shortly to be filed with the earlier gubbins that we've seen over the past (insert how long you've been 'at it!'). It's not really important. (No matter what Simon (Imberboy) thinks (LOL!) to the majority. Neither is the Duffy Connection, the Amy Whinehouse brigade, or the Kings Go Forth debacle of buying 45s with a view to ripping folks off in a year's time. See, the thing is...we've seen/heard it all before and most of us are still here! We may be the silent majority but we're still here. Still buying kosher 45s, still searching for that vinyl bargain in MINT - condition, still enjoying each others company and still celebrating the Sound Of Young America and all it's derivatives. The rest is just peripherals. Whatever it brings and wherever your soul journey takes you........get your head out your arse and ENJOY it! Please .......no more PM's unless it's a good sales list with lots of Detroit Demos on it at a third of the going rate! LOL! Regards, Dave
  18. Eh? I wasn't aware I'd called anyone names? I've no idea who you are or why you call yourself 'toodarnsoulful' but I call myself "Dave". I've also no idea how you got your money for records, nor do I care, it's nothing to do with me but like i say, none of these events affect me and what I do so it's no big deal to me. That was my whole point of posting. People are getting all wound up over nothing. 'Cos that's what it all is. "Keeping The Faith", "True Soulie"? I've absolutely no idea what you're on about Mate. Regards, Dave PS. If you've discovered a way to get free money for 45s please let me know as I've a wants list that grows by the week! So long as it doesn't include exchanging body fluids, I'm game! LOL!
  19. Over the years, this 'underground scene' has withstood all that's tried to dilute it. TV pundits, Egocentric Media thirsty DJs, Divvies who dance in clothing 40 years old, youngsters who think dancin' on Duffy videos is gaining them 'street cred', Cassette tapes, CDs, MP3s, Ipods, returnees who instantly become promoters, people who reinvent their personal history, bootleg DJs, the soul police, the vinyl police, the fashion police, the DS, the influx of barbs, the Mod revival, Coronation Street, naff advert and after naff advert on TV, a million new 'record dealers', price guides, carvers, theatrical plays, film extras, yuppie type record collectors, etc etc and none of it has affected me. I still do what I've done for 35 years. I buy records and dance to 'em. Can't see this film making any impression whatsoever on my lifestyle or enjoyment of what I do. It's a peripheral, a distraction for some but irrelevant to me. I'll probably get the DVD off Pete Smith in a year for a fiver and watch it when I've a spare 90 mins but that'll be it. It won't change my life, it won't stir up feelings of protectionism that it does in some. It's a film....like "Finding Nemo" was. That's it. Regards, Dave
  20. There's a lengthy thread on this 45 already on the forum. A quick search should reveal whet you're looking for. Regards, Dave
  21. I shouldn't have thought so. Someone had a touch of irony naming the group 'The Believers'. Regards, Dave
  22. That I've never seen. Anyone got a scan of one? Regards, Dave
  23. Sorry Mate but she was beaten to it by Fat Boy Slim, That Hip Teens DJ gubbins and Amy Whinehouse. Regards, Dave
