Recommended Record Of The Day, From Your Collection 2011
Dave Moore replied to dthedrug's topic in All About the SOUL
Todays offering: Ms Mary Wells, one of my favourite femme soul artists. Claimed to have been recorded in Chicago but I'm not sure? Speaking to Carl Davis a few years ago he confirmed that he had recorded with Mary at Golden World studios in an attempt to recreate her earlier success. Can't You See Your Losing Me' has the Funks written all over it, so does this for me. Either way a great slice of mid tempo femme soul for the price of an 'Arrow Bar' (Ask yer Dads) Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/tQ5sqMvogPA -

This morning's offering: A voice like a medieval battering ram. Had this for 30 years. Great record that will have another time in the spotlight I reckon. "There's nothing NEEEEEEEEEEW...!" Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/Wbci8tFxHDE -

Hi All, I'm currently working on a comprehensive book documenting Philadelphia's contribution to the soul world. I'm including a chapter on overseas record collectors who have visited the city and scored vinyl hits off artists/writers/producers etc. If anyone has any good stories about any of the East Coast distributors, or Frank Virtue, Joe Tarsia, Billy Jackson, Weldon A McDougall III, Jimmy Bishop, Bobby Martin, Thom Bell, or any other artist/person/people that they think would be a good inclusion then could I ask you to contact me via PM or at hitsville2648@earthlink.net and I'll see if it can be included. I'm not really looking for tales of the time folks scored a couple of Arctic Demos from Val Shively type things, but more about the contact made with the people who made the music and distributed it from the source. Thanks in anticipation. Regards, Dave

This mornings offering; It's actually 2. They could have been recorded at the exact same session! Detroit's musical signature all through the pair of 'em. Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/V-roUAXiDj8 https://youtu.be/gKODMGeot1o -

Probably have folks howling at the moon for posting this but this is one my favourite sax breaks of any 'Northern' record. He was a well trained, classical musician and I am fortunate to have found the original test pressings of the two sides of the original LP complete with his bio which is quite impressive. Break starts at 2.32. Check out the comments. Wonder how many people STILL think this was the George Clinton of Geo-Si-Mik and not as he really is, some Mid Western white boy with a horn? Regards, Dave

Here's one of my favourites: Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/5fOkBtYnEoo -
Every now and then a talent comes along that contributes large changes to a musical landscape. people like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis, Beatles etc are great examples. The sad thing being that sometimes these talents don't get a chance to realise the longevity they deserve. Otis Redding was one such talent. For me, Otis Redding was THE archetypal soul performer. His records are truly soulful, his vocal delivery could be as tender as gossamer or as tough as granite, he could sing it all. But, for me, it's his live perfomances that push him head and shoulders above most others. He had that magical ability to smother his audience, to wrap himself around them and draw them in, to make it appear that he was singing in a phone booth , alone, with no inhibitions to restrict him. That ability is priceless. A big giant of a man physically, it always pleases me when people who worked with him are asked to sum him up, as the constant phrase used is 'a gentle soul'. To me eternal regret, I never got to see him sing live. But the recordings of his performances are all over the net so I've started this little thread so that other fans can drop them off here and share their favorite live performances of his. Otis Redding was a soul singer. Enough said. Regards, Dave

This mornings offering: A Broadway show tune given the 'soul' treatment by one of the genres 'Giants' who sadly passed away 44 years today. I placed a copy of this in the coffin of one of my best Mates a few years ago, we both absolutely had it as our #1 performance of all time. So...for Alan Hughes....It's still up there Buddy. Dunn, Cropper and Jackson at the top of their game and you can almost SMELL Otis' soul! How much would you pay for a ticket to see these guys nowadays? Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/KiDq4Q62tz4 -

Todays offering: Great version of the old Mary Wells Motown outing. Same group as on Bandera, Lovelite and Cottillion. Not many covers rival Ms Wells' but this one does. Great looking label too. Anyone ever seen a promo? Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/s2wIz8Y682E -
