  1. Same as Morris Ballen's set up maybe? There was a Disc Makers in Philly right up to the late 90s. Will see if the adresses match. Hey....give 'em a ring! Regards, Dave
  2. Sounds about right for Minter, Kev. Regards, Dave
  3. Not sure if this is of interest to too many but it's great 'snippet' of how the radio airwaves of Philly were back in the late 60s. The DJ is the legendary Sonny Hopson aka The Mighty Burner. There's a great advert for a live show with The Vibrations around the 26 minute mark. Makes a great background sound when working on the computer etc... The CD of Sonny Hopson is still available from Dave Brown's https://www.funkadelphiarecords.com/ Regards, Dave SOUNDFILE REMOVED. Was uploaded for people to listen to with a view to buying and keeping this type of work alive not to download. If you click on the link you can buy a copy though.
  4. Ginger certainly has a one for sure but there are others around also. I'm not sure Ginger's has any promo text? Think the promo is just plain white. Regards, Dave
  5. There's is also a yellow and purple demo of this 45. Regards, Dave
  6. Is the Gateway format different to the other two? The Strakers ifs different to the Shipp version and I'm wondering if the Gateway is yet a third version? I love the song but prefer the Strakers one. Be interested to hear the Gateway one. (No MP3s allowed on site so Mixcloud anyone maybe?) Regards, Dave
  7. According to all the blurbs, the girls are all native Australians. Nothing to do with the US group Mate. Here's a bit more background on the original girls and how the film came about. 8. She certainly was Del. And also a humble and slightly shy person too, that had poise and came across as a classy lady. The guys at Dig Deeper did good. (Again). Wish New York was a a bit nearer once a month! Regards, Dave
  9. Nice one Chalky, she was pretty awesome at Prestatyn too. And a nice lady who hopefully will see good times return. Regards, Dave
  10. Yep should have made that a little clearer, can't remember the flip being played too much until about 2000 though. Regards, Dave
  11. It's the flip to his more Northern outing that was played about 10 years ago for a while. Greety is on here as,,,,,,,,Greety! Regards, Dave
  12. Yeah but that was just you asking your questions ...what about the rest of us? Only joking Pal, they were great shows, especially like the Bobby Patterson one. Now there's a real DJ. Regards, Dave
  13. Obviously. But knowing Jerry Ross like I do, I've no doubt hell be chasing them down for use of the name, that I can guarantee! Regards, Dave
  14. Dave, Here's trailer for the film. Looks like a great romp about in the 60s. Soundtrack sounds good too. Bet it's not long before Mr Jerry Ross is chasing them though!! Regards, Dave https://youtu.be/6Ljho1cyEfg
  15. Yep, Few Classic oldies Few Underplayed oldies Few Current plays Few New To My Lugs Plays Sounds like a plan to me Mate! Regards, Dave
  16. I would never frequent a gig that was "playing rare for the sake of rare" as you define rare either. I suppose our definition of 'Rare' differs. I don't care if there are 5 copies or 5000 copies, I don't care if a 45 cost 5 pounds or 5 thousand pounds. That's not my definition of the term 'Rare Soul'. To me it means music that you can't hear on radios, isn't played at the local disco, or just something that someone has found that's good and needs an airing to like minded people. Sure, many of them turn out to be hard to find, but so does a lot of pish too. It's still pish...just hard to find pish. Regards, Dave
  17. The Hitsville Tenth Anniversary in 2014 will hopefully encompass that scenario Russ. Irons are in the fire as we speak. A great opportunity in UK would be at Prestatyn in March. Set it up in The Old Vic with one afternoon dedicated to a Q and A with Mr Carl Fisher. I did over 30 hours of interviews with the man. He's a mine of information and a gent to boot. Massive catalogue to go at and lots of memories of the Chitlin' Circuit, some great producers including Carl Davis, Gamble and Huff etc. He's been performing since he was a member of The Jayhawks in the 1950s! Regards, Dave
  18. I don't think I'd be happy to go to a Northern Soul gig that played all the commercially successful soul records. That's the whole point of having a Rare Soul scene surely, so you can hear stuff you can't play at home? But every now and then, still like to turn the old volume up loud at home, crack a few scoops and appreciate it for what it is.....great music. Regards, Dave
  19. 100%. When Gloria Jones appeared a few years ago she was obviously struggling badly and a few people asked me why I clapped so loud after such a poor performance. My answer was exactly what you posted "I'm not clapping for the last 15 minutes, I'm clapping for the last 30 odd years'. https://youtu.be/evzyrBSbnUs Regards, Dave
  20. Absolutely. I'd rather see an evening set up where there was buffet served and a bar open or something and the artists relaxed but in semi formal setting, similar to an after dinner speech scenario but without too much formality. Hey......I can feel an event coming on here........lets see how much support SSers would have for that type of set up? Regards, Dave
  21. He he! I'm trying to put a decent hotbox together with 'em so I can do a bit o' that there Deeeeejaaaying lark everyone puts so much store by. But then of course you're expected to lop yer lugs off and start pontificating to all and sundry about just how good records like that George Lemons that yer paid a grand for are! He He! Here's another couple that got dusted off: First one created, produced and performed by one of the greatest rhythm sections to ever grace a studio and recorded at the one of the greatest studio set ups ever. The second one starts with Leon Huff's greatest hour in my opinion. There's a reason these records topped the charts eh....cos they're bleedin' fantastic! https://youtu.be/ejrWHEsyS40 Regards, Dave
  22. Played these two in Frankie's last month. Great songs, great records sung by real singers: https://youtu.be/P2uQyP-I2VI https://youtu.be/dYTqTPmTZ0o
  23. The Q and A session are something that I've banged on about for a number of years. Most people who bring acts to UK won't do them. The reckoning is that there's no demand. When we got the Dynodynamics Production Team together a few years ago (for the first time on 40 years), we set up a whole afternoon where we asked them about their lives in music. A simple set up of a couple of mics, a set of turntables to play the odd track (or parts of) being discussed and I have to say it was a great afternoon. What made it even better was that we had young American record collectors/fans with us and they loved it. To be fair, at Prestatyn there was always the afternoons prior to the Main Saturday night show to interview the artists and that was also great but to do it in front of an audience with all the questions being furnished from fans in that audience is a special way of doing it in my opinion. The artists seem to get a real buzz out of being reminded about their former lives from the 'shop floor' scenario. The recent Kenny Gamble interview with Richard Searling and Ralph Tee to promote the upcoming CD of Philadelphia's TSOP era is a great example of an opportunity that could have been opened up to such an audience. Some real answers to some real questions could have been gotten. We do it with sportsmen, politicians, other people of note so why not our heroes too? I'd pay for an structured evening with some of the artists, that's for sure and I know plenty of others that would. Good thread. Nice One. Regards, Dave
  24. Steve, Nice Martha and The Vandellas. If you ever wanna shift it give me a knock Mate. Regards, Dave
