This maybe true in UK and imo it's too ingrained in the publics perception of "Northern Soul". However..............Northern/Rare Soul is now a worldwide phenomenon and the "foreign" scenes have two advantages: 1. There's no hang up about the 70s and all it's complications to wrestle with. The "Foreign" scenes didn't exist then. 2. The experiences of Ex Pat UK fans coupled with the expertise and enthusiasm of local fans breathes "fresh air" into a "fledgeling" scene. The "mistakes" of the UK scene can be avoided, whilst the positive aspects can be enhanced, and all this with no "politics" undermining everyone's efforts. The collapse of the VegasShuffle event was a perfect example of how 'importing" the UK scene doesn't work, unless you bring your own punters, DJs, scene, with you. So...........watch this space..... Great points. The best way to collect records imo is to buy em, file 'em, then forget 'em, (as in completely write off the cost as gone, finito, dead money. etc). Only buy what you really want so then if the price tumbles...who gives a rats ass? You ain't selling 'em anyway right? You didn't buy them with an eye on the future......right? Err, I get confused over statements like this. If you regard the artists/writers/producers/musicians etc as producing what they did for anything other than the bottom line then that imo is totally niaive. They simply used their talents (same as a bricklayer), in an attempt to make a living in a profession they felt they had something to offer. You ask Popcorn if he would rather a top ten "pop" record in '67 or a sought after "raresoul" rarity that sold nil in '05? Christ, half the musicians/artists/labels in Detroit would have given their right arms to have half the "white peoples money success" that Motown had. I agree that records like Baby Love have no place on the rare soul scene, but for quite different reasons. Basically, you can hear it on the radio, at home, at "normal' discos etc etc. Therefore it becomes MOR. But musically and the reason it was produced is imo one and the same as Jackie Beavers on Revilot. You think the Solid Hitbound Team or the folks at Pied Piper did what they did for the love of it?? Read Jack Ashfords book. Kinda puts things in perspective. If you speak to artists still involved in the business, they STILL see the $$$ when you discuss their current projects. (ie. What's in it for me? This is how I make my living), and quite rightly so. You wouldn't ask a plumber to fix your leak for nothing would you. No difference imo. This night came about because my ex-girlfriend interviewed Ian Levine around 18 months ago. He told her he loved DJing but didn't get offered many gigs because of the hatred surrounding him. It took quite a lot of convincing him, but he came round because we told him that the majority of people out there still love him and what he has achieved. I make no excuses if people feel he has done them wrong, but we must respect him as a human being. If it wasn't for Ian, there is little doubt that we still would not know about a lot of soul records... and we would still be unearthing them today. Best of luck with this gig Eric. As someone who felt exactly the same a few years ago, but was then treated like a complete numpty by someone who ruined what could have been a "scene changing" event I think your "daft as a brush" Mate! It's a booklet in which some of the worlds "greatest bassists" celebrate the art of Jamerson. Comes with Cds or C90 tape that compliment the text. On Ebay regularly. Great artifact to have. There is media/TV/video interest and I have been asked by the production company involved if I can help in locating any Northern Soul artists who live in the SE states with a view to them participating in a documentary about the "music America is now rediscovering". Interviews and the like. Wakefield Unity is correct. Old Pat Brady stomping ground. We used to pile over there from the Buff Club in Barnoldswick in the mid 70s. I too remember an announcement over the mike that there was a dodgy substance about and that people should be aware of the danger. The whole "horse pills" seems familiar. The gang from my home town lost quite a few to the drug craze, but it was mainly as folks "progressed" to the hard stuff and barbs really took hold of a few too. Always had good service from John for over 20 years, and in fact if you dig around in his catalogue there are still some nice bits to be found. Buy for tomorrow NOT yesterday is my motto. Too much competition for the medium rare oldies nowadays from the returnee wannabee DJ crowd. As far as some of the astronomical prices are concerned. All sorts bid on his auctions. Loads on here have admitted it to it in one breath and then "complain" about someone else doing it a week later! . And if you want to sell something, loads of people go scuttering off to John's hoping to make a killing. You can't have it both ways can you? VelVets on 20th Century Fox at 450 quid! Scary stuff indeed! But rekkid collections are like the stock market, they are only worth what you sell them for. If you don't sell then they become valueless in monetary terms. Hi Jamie, Wouldn't dream of being judgemental about another collector mate. If I came accross as that then I apologise unreservedly. As I said, each collector does his own individual thing. I just get a liitle wound up at times when non vinyl collectors seem to want to "point out the error of my ways" all the time. I'll still be "at it" when the latest set of "soul heroes" are long gone again. See, as we all know, there's a distinct difference between a collector and a "person on the soul scene". Nothing right or wrong about either......it's just that they're different animals imo. As far as the toilet roll fiasco is concerned. I always found that there arsewiping ritual a bit of a waste of time so never had to buy the stuff. Which of course meant ANOTHER twopennybobshilling W/Demo came my way!
