Would The Scene Die If There Were No Longer Vinyl
Dave Moore replied to Billy Freemantle's topic in All About the SOUL
Here my tu'ppence'worth..... The vinyl collectors/purists/whatever you want to call them (us) are imo the fans with the strongest ties, passion, longevity in them. Probably lots of people will howl that "I love the scene but don't collect ANY format!" Fair play to you I know a few fans like that too. But in general, I think it's the collectors who form the hardcore of the scene as far as the music NOT the social part of it is concerned. I remember when (zzzzzzz ) the ONLY people "at it" were the collectors! And when all the returnee fans find something encroaching into their lives that will replace the soul scene again (which they will, grandkids, retirement, etc etc.), the hardcore left to continue until they prize the last vestige of vinyl from their dead cold hands will be............. Exactly! The soul "scene", also means different things to different people. "The Scene" and Original vinyl v other formats is ONLY an issue in the UK! Most people outside the UK find it completely incredulous, at least here in the States anyway. I would venture that the number of records leaving the shores of UK is now rapidly approaching a similar number to the ones arriving (if not more!). The Rare soul scene is now an international phenomenon. The UK is no longer the be all and end all of " The Scene". A lot of people who haven't experienced soul outside the UK tend to forget this and therefore their perception of collectors, and the soul "scenes", it spawns is a little one dimensional. I appreciate the question was primarily concerned with the UK scene, but thought I'd put an international slant on it. Only in my opinion of course. Regards, Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com/ -

I agree here. My stand on "copyrighted music" has changed as I researched it to the nth degree when setting up The Hitsville website. My aim was was to remain faithful to the spirit of the artist and their product. It proved damn near impossible. It's a real quagmire. Talk to ten "professionals" and you get 10 different answers. For instance: If music is "played from a website" is it classed as "broadcasted"? WHOLE new messy ballgame opens up. If you are "promoting" music by making already released and then deleted tracks available for free are you categorised the same as someone who is selling downloads of Eminem? If the music you post on your site is no longer commercially available, is this the same as posting available music? If you have (as one site has) pre-recorded CDs actually served up on a server for anyone to download and then save/play at liesure are you actually damaging the genuinely produced CDs and jeopardising any future music from being produced by said CD company? THIS IS THE REAL TOUGHIE IN MY OPINION If you pay ascap/bmi fees for broadcasted music, are you eligible to play "recorded" music? The conclusion I came to is......I'm gonna do what I THINK is right and proper. There is NO definitive common sense answer. The licensing bodies just make it damn near impossible financially to produce any music related sites without bankrupting you. I pay the fees that I FEEL are relevant. I also contact the artists of music on the site if possible and the ones I've spoken to are happy for us to "promote" their songs that they thought had been long passed over. If it's good enough for them...it's good enough for me. It's obvious to a blind man on a galloping horse that sites like this promote the music, in a very positive way and I'm sure Mike, as a bloke with common sense will arrive at the conclusion that suits his, and therefore the sites, aspirations. Hi Col, The answer is yes. The Annual Hitsville Allniter and Recird Show weekend is in the planning . Dates/details should all be in place by the end of January, but we are hoping to do it all in September. There's also the first South East Soul Club soul nite taking place in Jan and we hope to do this on a mo nthly basis. Keep checking the site everuy now and then Mate as we'll have it all up there as soon as we confirm it all. Thanks for the interest. Be good to see a few faces out in the "New World of RareSoul" for a few scoops, some tunes, sun, sand and vinyl hunting. Regards Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com/

Hi Andy, I purchased the Numark last spring and havew to say it's impressive for the money. (I only paid 79.99USD though). If I have one critiscism it's that the sound level is a little too low. I use headphones with mione though so it's not a real problem for me. Good battery life, Great carrying case - + speed control I've found it very reliable. Hope this helps, Regards, Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

Joe, It would appear that your bidder has not been duped, so ........... your need for a cloutin' has now been rescinded. Merry Christmas Regards Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

This is a common misconception with a lot of collectors here in the States. A lot of people associate Doo Wop with Northern Soul and even though the artists may have links, the actual musical genres are as apart as Trad Jazz and Rap imo. A lot of dealers here also work under the artist/label criteria, which as we all know is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard in terms of identifying a NS record. The amount of stuff filed as NS by someone like Garnett Mimms because of "Looking for you" is still frustrating! Regards, Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com JOE (Fosman) 1. What happened with the Lenny Curtis bootleg? 2. If you wanna hear some Northern Soul then visit www.soulclub.org

Hi al, I'm looking for any anecdotes, photos, flyers or general memorabelia associated with Major Lance. Especially his time in UK '70-72. I don't need records or picture sleeves but rather the stuff that will help complete the picture about the man and his body of work including personal appearances, meet and greets etc etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

The problem here is that Joe (Fosland), was made aware of the problem and ignored well intended expert advice. Forums like this are paramount in exposing these "errors" and I for one am more than happy to point out the mistakes and give dealers the benefit of the doubt. These boots are turning up here now. I've even had the JM Bootleg Guide thrust under my nose as "justification". Most US dealers however, when aware of the true status of these crappy things, will either relist/cancel the item/withdraw it from sale. Here's the REAL issue, he didn't. And, for all we know may well have scammed some poor punter out of a considerable wad of dosh! No other word for it. Thievery! Plain and simple. Hence, with all respect to any Bhudist listees, needs a cloutin'. If however, Fosland has the integrity to return the cash, cancel the transaction and relist the shite for what it is then of course his need for a cloutin' will recieve my full and undivided reconsideration. Question? Say, for instance, this happened at a 'niter what would ensue? Regards, Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com/

Hi Mark, I would guess that deep down every collector is a bit of both. Think we suffer from Compulsive Behaviour Syndrome? Have thought about letting some pieces go over recent years, just can't get motivated to actually doing it. Think it would leave too big a hole in the soul/heart/life. Sad eh? Regards, Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com/ -

Paid 150UKP only three years ago for this AND Good Good Feeling!!. Got me thinking has all this mad malarkey....... I collect records, I don't sell records, I collect records. However........... If I sell my collection now and bank the money it will sit there until most "returning" collectors get fed up and decide that a boat, house in Spain, or whatever takes their fancy is actually what they REALLY want out of their wad! So in a few years time lots of collectors start the avalance of sales (similar to mid 80s say). I then simply take my interest loaded vinyl money out the bank and buy back all the same records in a price tumbling environment. Hence.... I get all my collection back and make a tidy profit into the bargain! What dya reckon? Sounds good but then again......... Regards, Dave https://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com/ -
