  1. Would anyone have a picture of Herbie Williams and/or Loraine Chandler or could point me in the direction of one? Any help greatfully appreciated. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  2. Have to agree with Diana Ross as lead too. Although I think Flo was a good singer, the material was definitely designed for someone like DR. The bounce-along melodies ceated by H-D-H seem almost designed for her particular style. The same could be said about Levi Stubbs I think too. H-D-H undoubtably crafted their songs with particular voices in mind. I think the resulting success the Supremes enjoyed validates, in itself, Gordy's decision. 3. Spent the evening round Sam and Kev's yesterday. He's up and about, and although taking it easy, he'slooking (and feeling), much better and relishing the new diet that Sam has enforced! They would like to thank everyone for the good wishes and messages of support they've received. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  4. Hey Hey Rusty Knickers! Wonder where you heard that? Gudinnit? It's the flip to Everything I do - Port Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  5. Good Call Brian, One of the enigmas that is Jamerson imo is how he can be so aggressive on one song and yet so delicate on another. Take for instance his contributions to the two songs here: https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Jackie_Wils..._And_Higher.ram https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Marvin_Gaye...ing_Brother.ram First one it's as though he and the drummer (Benjamin?) are the amost 'dragging' everyone else along. Only Jackie Wilson could compete with them on this track. Anyone else would have been smotherd by them imo. Second one, you can hardly spot his Fender at all, but it's as vital to the whole sound as much as Marvin's vocal. Maestro indeed. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  6. Great topic Hammy, The greatest bassline for me is on one of the cheapest records we all own. It ranks up with any 'classical' music or anything I've ever heard recorded in any style or genre. It is of course...... Stevie Wonder - UPIGHT! - Tamla There are a couple of others I think are fantastic but I'll not hog your thread. Back later with a couple more. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  7. The Headliners VAL label is definitely Pittsburgh. The label will feature in Jason's Steel City Soul article in Issue #3 of There's That Beat! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  8. Mel Britt sent Mike. Regards , Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  9. Bob closes the doors on Feb 10th. There 's an open invite to be there and sort of 'celebrate' this institution and it's passing. Think there gonna "Party Down!" Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  10. I wouldn 't think they 'd be too valuable to be honest. Not in monetary terms anyway. Can't see anyone shelling out big $$$s for what are effectively "so so " sounds. What Weldon would pay to have them I wouldn't like to say, but I know he would like them. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  11. Morning Mel, Grant Higgins is the same person as Rod Jordan which is how "I Live In A Castle" was released (Karen 322). Apparently Ollie McLaughlin didn't think the name Grant Higgins would fly. Grant was a Rock n Roll artist who had a long career in that genre. His nephew Weldon Higgins has just finished his uncle's biography. When looking around the songwriters of Detroit stuff , his name appears every now and then. I think he did some stuff with Sharon MacMahon. Grant's family hadn't herad any of his stuff until recently. They were stunned when they found out he had a few "collectors items" under his belt They have copy of I Live In A Castle now but I know Weldon would be interested in then acetates if they wee for sale. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  12. Hi Ian, I think the group contained TWO of the Burke brothers at one stage. Carl Fisher (of the Vibrations), wrote their hit "Ain't Nothing But A Houseparty". He also wrote a couple of other little ditties "Storm Warning" and The Laws Of Love" ofor The Volcanos. Wonder where he is now...in fact I'm off to find out! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  13. Hi Roger . The Four Perfections were not the same group as the Showstoppers as far as I know. Melvin Steals and his brother were part of The Four Perfections, we met him in NJ on Soultrip USA. Archie Bell introduced us thus.... "That guy over there used to be in a group back in the day with one of his brothers. They were pretty good. Hey Melvin...what was the name of the group you and your brother ran with?" "The Four Perfections" Could have knocked me down with limp stick! Great stuff! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  14. Great record. Sheer quality. However, I cleared the floor with this last year in UK! Regards , Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  15. That's the bugger! Regards , Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  16. Ady, The Imperials also had at least one release on this imprint. Can't remember what it was. May well have been a version of I'm On The Outside Looking In (I think). Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

  19. We met a guy a couple of years ago used to DJ at the Ford Annual Picnic back in the day. Came round, had a beer or two, brought about 50 Detroit 45s. Said he had a couple of thousand more at home. Was thinking of selling. I invited him to the Hitsville Weekender - He spent all night on the dancefloor! He started collecting!! Damn!! Had another contact that I used to get quite good stuff from. When I moved here he and his wife became friends. He also started collecting!! Damn!! I'm a jinx! Regards , Dave www.hitsvillesoulclub.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  20. Now THAT I'd like to see. He 's out here next week so I'll confirm. Regards , Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  21. ICWUISMBF - I too really like the Spyder Turner version. recently aquired on an MGM Canadian LP Promo, although if I had to choose a femme version it would be Baby Washington. I think songs of this quality transcend the actual vocalist Quality will out an ' all that. Can't thnk of a bad version of tghis song. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  22. Proper Norven! Ere you go Mel: Never seen a demo. In fact ...never heard of anyone having one. Anyone? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  23. If it's just general records people are looking for then yes, there are still a number of places around. Jupiter, N Lauderdale, Miami, Daytona and Tampa areas still have shops/stalls etc. Telephone books should have all the major ones and of course if you're in Ft Lauderdale then Jason is always worth calling of course. (He 's much more of a dealer than I - I have trouble parting with ANYTHING, including doubles!). If anyone needs any further details feel free to email me at: hitsville2648@earthlink.net Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  24. Many a disappointed collector left Orlando. Record Show is on end of January but apart from the odd thing now and then it's pretty much all gone. Although it was never a hotbed of vinyl imo, (IL find accepted), us local guys have emptied it over the years. When I moved here I figured all these guys retiring down here would bring there 45s and flog 'em for boats and stuff and I'd be 'quids in '. Good plan but with one major error...they flog the stuff before they come!! Doh! Sorry to disapppoint...just calling it as is it. Weather's great though! Regards , Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  25. Dave, Time to drag Greety out of retirement? Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
