  1. Hey Phil, Good to see you back and at it Matey. You make some valid points (as does MelBratt and Steve G). Good to see a discussion without the oldies v newies bias ruining it. Kim and Lester Tipton - God bless her cotton socks! Had many a similar comment from Bev bless her! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  2. It's the other side that is the stunning crossover side. Similar in style but a tad more meaty tempo, great use of vibes and certainly a better song. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  3. I think Ollie Mac did a lot of business in Chicago. Certainly the Karen records have a Chicago feel to them, (Not so much soundwise but manufacture wise), and a number of his records were actually recorded/produced there. Both sides of this record credit "The Capitols" with being at the board but I suspect Mr Terry and Ollie had a guiding hand in both sides. "I Thought She Loved Me" is Donald Storball's best composition in my opinion and the other members of group Sam George and Richard McDougall are credited as the writers of the other side. A great group effort from all involved that produced two soul sides that are top notch and a record that I would venture is not seen too often. I'd all but given up on the W/Demo until Bam! up it popped on the ole "Evilbay". Snapped it up. Now happily nestling with the rest of Ollie's 45s. Dontcha just luuuurve this collecting malarkey! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

  9. Hi Guys, I would have thought the answer was obvous. It's simply a slice of sheer quality as far as classic Detroit soul is concerned. On a great label and reaonably hard to get again should you part with it...therefore people hold on to it. Especially if in good nick. There are plenty around...but they tend to stay in collector's boxes. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com

  16. Jo, The RCA and Big Top groups are the same. The CD is in the promo stage at the moment and I can tell you it's the dogs nads as it comes in a cardboard vintage looking sleeve. The mag may well feature the group and all it's tentacles within the Detroit music scene, in the next issue. There are lots of interesting overlaps with the group that will ceratainly surprise a few people. I'll ask Jason to send me a pic of the CD and post it up here on it's release. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  17. The Zerben Hicks led Dynamics may feature in the September Issue of There's That Beat! The group are on something of a revival at the moment with a CD release of lots of their hits from over the years and a new management/label in place. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  18. Hi Kev, Unfortunately not Mate. There's no soul rare event in Florida at all at the moment except the Weekender. Friday should be a good night. See ya there. Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  19. Oiy! Buy the mag you tight git! Or should we just publish one copy and everyone copy it? Sheeesh! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  20. And at least one in Florida Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  21. As the 1950s slipped away, 3 erstwhile young Philly music men embarked on a dream..to make records...And believe me....MAKE RECORDS THEY CERTAINLY DID! Regards, Dave https://www.theresthatbeat.com https://www.hitsvillesoulclub .com
  22. Another that certainly looks kosher to me. Miff, you asking about the song or the label? The label design is definitely Kosher. Same as mine as far as I can remember. Unless of course mines dodgy too! God, Tony's got me all paroid now!! I'm off to dig my Motown boxes out and check 'em all! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat. www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  23. Hi Tony, Yep, That's a great point actually. I don't see how we can ever be sure unless someone does an exhaustive investigation of the labels. It's such a massive undertaking. Different plants, different distributors, old stock of labels, "small legal" differences in some 45s of the same song. Subsequent further pressing runs to meet demand of a hit. I suppose that's one of the attractions of collecting it all eh? Tell you what Mate...my missus recons it simply CAN'Tt be good for us! Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  24. Hi Bogue, As far as I've always been aware The R is the date that the song was registered with Ascap/BMI. Can't remember any bootlegs/reissued of the main core of the Tamla/Motown etc labelled stuff. The Pinks were "reissued" in the 80s and there are 45s repros of some rarer items like Patrice Holloway (VIP) etc, but I think the availalblity of tracks like IGIALY on original vinyl would preclude tye bootleggers being interested. Best, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
  25. Hi There, Andrew "Mike" Terry is a name that conjures up the most magical of Motown musical memories. One of the few people from the era that can wear the mantle of "legend" with complete comfort. But Motown wasn't Mike's only contribution to the world of soul music.... click here for a peek at his story... Regards, Dave www.theresthatbeat.com www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
