  1. The very last outpost for vinyl junkies that has yeilded any decent Northern 45s over the past decade on a reasonably regular basis closed it's doors in October. Central Florida is now so bad for soul 45s that I even stopped going to the Record Shows a couple of years ago. With the constant flow of tourists through the area what does show is snapped up the same day. Recent visits to Bananas and Rock N Roll Heaven were met with the following statement from Dave F and I: "My crappy sales box is better than their 'rare' and collectable' sales boxes". My advice to any vinyl hunter is to 'Head North .....and quickly!' Of course everyone thinks that i don't let on where the real stashes are! We had 'em away, years ago.
  2. Hi Greg, The Angels Nightclub was under an NCP car park in the town centre. The music played there was a mix of JazzFunk and Disco. It was all chrome, stainless steal and state of the art lighting. It was the days of frantic dancing, people blowing whistles etc (long before then rave scene), and I think I'm right in saying that The Angels was regarded as the leader in terms of clubs of this nature. I only went a couple of times as the music wasn't really my thing and just round the corner was the Inn Plaice (Concord Club), that we used to run, which was Rare/Northern only.
  3. Dave, Hopefully the Chicago trip will bring more artists out into the spotlight too. I know of a few that are going to be there that will enthrall us and the hunt is continuing for others. I'm sure Kev will update everyone in the Spring about who has been found and booked so far. One other important point about these trips is that the fans, (us), get to put $$$ directly into the pockets of the artists. My record room (as I know a few others are), is full of pictures, CDs, T Shirts, Autographs, vinyl, and anything else that the artists turn up with that I'll never play, dig out. Point is it's a chance to say thank you and celebrate the music with the artists who created it, up close and personal. For those who enjoy the company of legendary rare/northern soul artists there is nothing to compare these trips to. Without these trips the likes of Norman Donegan, Melvin Steals, Bill Oxendine, Al Johnson, etc etc would never have known that their music was cherished in the way it is by fans thousands of miles away. It also brings the music to the attention of US soul fans. Surely these are good things? Or are parts of the UK Rare/Northern Soul 'scene' too intent on seeing their glasses constantly half empty instead of half full? See you in the Windy City Mate. Dictaphone at the ready!
  4. Subscribers copies were mailed yesterday morning and are wanging their way to you. Should be with everyone at weekend hopefully. Copies of the latest issue are now on sale at the website at: www.theresthatbeat.com Great features this month include: Willie Tee The Dynamics A trip around the historical soul locations of Philadelphia including a look inside the tape vault of Frankford-Wayne and the Philadelphia International Records' Sigma 2 studios. 5. Hi Adam, I'll take one off your hands Mate. Let me know when condition and price when you come across them will you.
  6. Been looking for a W/Demo of this for what seems like eons. I'm reasonably sure I saw them around 77/78 but haven't seen any since. Not sure if it was the earlier release or not either. Any fellow vinyl maniac wanna confirm/deny the existence for me and confirm which label font is on the demo? Help appreciated.
  7. I do what I can Mate.....
  8. Happened to me once. A guy placed Billy Prophet on Merrimac upside down and I didn't discover it for good few months. Needless to say the chap in question was sent a solicitor's letter and will NEVER receive anothyer invite to the record room. Brother or no brother!!
  9. I have only 8 copies of Issue #3 left so, best be quick though.

  11. I suppose it's a question of interpretation Mike but either way here's a few BB's I like: UpTights - Look A Little Higher - Alley Jimmy Beaumont - I Never really Loved You - Bang Little Anthony - It'll Never be The Same - Veep Ray Paige - Don't Stop - RCA Roy Hamilton - Reach Out for Me - RCA
  12. I have absolutely no idea Mate.
  13. The late Kae Williams Snr was a DJ/Record Producer/Record label owner in Philadelphia back in the day. The Junior label from Philadelphia (Yvonne Baker and The Sensations etc) was owned by him and was named after his son Kae Williams Jr. Mr Williams Jr is an accomplished producer himself and is still producing records both on his own and as part of a team when asked. I first met Kae Jr at Kev Robert's gig in Philadelphia along with Dave Ferguson, Dave Greet, Colin Dilnot and other collectors so eloquently described by Mr Sadot as sheep. I only mentioned Kae Williams as it seemed ironic to me that the thread was a lambasting of Kev Roberts and it was him who found Kae (or at least it was his gig that put us all together.)
  14. Then you didn't look very hard Trevski Mate. He's still producing in Philly. In fact Kae Williams Jr was a guest at a Kev Roberts gig last year. How ironic! I'm sure he could put you in touch with Kae in order to send him a royalty.
  15. AARGGHH!!! Sticky 'things' on 45s OR sleeves!!?? ARRGGH!!! Records should be file ad hoc in a pristine colored inner sleeve. No writing or stickers on ANYTHING, label or sleeve and then placed lovingly in a white cardboard sleeve which should also be devoid of any 'trashy" markings. It goes without saying that all labels should be completely upright within both sleeves. That way eveytime you dig something out - you find stuff you forgot you had! It is however, permissable to have various colors for the inner sleeve if you feel you need to hang on to some semblence of order.ie US Demos RED UK Demos GREEN Anything more diverse than is a no no. You may if you desire place Spindles/Spyders in the US DEMOS provided of course that they are all tweaked to the correct angle in unison. Hope this helps - though I suspect not.
  16. Me too, that's why Hitsville's base is moving to Spain. Already hooked up with a few Spanish soulies. Valencia Weekender in april. Events all over the ppace with young un's and old un's all in the mix. Great collectors, fresh outlook, glorious weather, great food, and a hop skip and jump from the 100 club and the rest of ole Blighty...Can't wait.
  17. Tony, Please pass on Bev and I's best wilya? Saw him at Guy's do - He was cackin' his pants! Told him it was walk in the park. He'll be even grumpier now for a few weeks! Glad it all went well.
  18. That's the bugger I think Mike. Much obliged. How come I couldn't find that when I searched? Seen some great names through there, Mayfield, Davis, Hampton, Witshire et al. Much obliged Mate.
  19. I wonder if any SS'ers can help me out........I'm trying to identify a studio in Nashville that had a 'floating floor'. IE the floor was suspended and didn't touch the walls. It was new technology in the early 60s and I'm trying identify which studio it was. Any help greatly appreciated.
  20. Hi All, Can anyone shed any light on a studio in Nashville that used new 'floating floor' technology. IE the floor floated and didn't touch the walls somehow. It was new technology back in the early 60s. Any help greatly appreciated.
  21. Hi Stuart, Laptop paptop....may you burn in a vinyless hell! Hoping Mr Coyle brings a checkbook or a lottery win cos he'll need it Mate. Rest of season to sort the wheat from the chaff and then start the rebuild. Onwards and Upwards!!
  22. Hi Kev, I'd rate these particular records as the same as US as far as price goes. At least that's what I would expect to pay/sell them for. I'm trying to think of a Canadian copy of a US issued 45 that prices drastically different and Im stumped. (Or at least one that I'd pay a lot of difference for). You managed a copy of my remaining Reo/Ric Tic 45 yet Matey?
  23. When we started There's That Beat! Ian sent me a lovely letter of encouragement with some artist picks and a check for subs. Old school and a gent to boot. Some of the 'DJ' threads on here would have him laughing that's for sure.
  24. Yep, Think you're right, I didn't understand your point of view. It's not unusual for me when 'listening" to DJs though. Many of the discussions about "The Scene" and their part in it I find strange at times to say the least. I'd rather concentrate on the collecting/dancing side of things within the scene. I have no desire to be a DJ. I think my views are shaped because of that. I struggle with a lot of the 'DJ' related threads on here now. For many of us I would venture that the old school etiquette associated with enjoying rare records-collecting-DJing-sourcing-enjoying new discoveries by folks who've dug them out and applauding people who drop the odd forgotten oldie on the Technics is self explanatory by now and still at the heart of what is called in UK "The Scene". Take away the vinyl hounds and I would suggest that the venues would soon lose a lot of appeal for a lot of people. For instance, what we gonna talk about between the disco records and the Rock n Roll some DJ's foist on their customers at times. Mags going great guns thanks Matey. Might even be able to afford real meat again in a few years. The US fanbase collects the mag. It's great to post them out to subscribers in Kansas, Texas, New Jersey, California, Maine etc etc. Now if only I could persuade them to get off their arses and get on a plane at the same time together we may actually have a scene of our own here!
  25. Next Issue now safely tucked up with the printer and should be mailed out to subscribers on 4th December.
