  1. You've an uphill struggle there Paul, but fair dos for giving it a shot Matey. Watching 20-25 year olds dressed as 40 year old mods is just as comical for some of us though!
  2. Not much to tell really. 1978 ish I (like lots of others), sent dosh to LA for a rake of 45s only to receive "substitutes", (bootlegs), as my selections weren't currently in stock. (From my enquiries then, neither were most other peoples.) Man's a thief, pure and simple. I'd give him a quick 'Chuck Norris type whack' to the temple as means of repayment if the opportunity ever pesented itself. Must be dozens of guys that he scammed back then at least.
  3. You shoulda slapped the fooker gud n hard back then Julian and saved some of us a lot of grief and money!
  4. Hi Kevin, When I wrote the feature I was about 700 words over the allottment. In hindsight I should have kept the references to ALL their 45s in the piece. Problem is that would have meant I would have to leave out some of the other detail. Lesson learned though on my behalf. (Every issue is a learning curve for us), you're right it's a great record and maybe I should have included at least a pic of it on the centre spread collage. My apologies to all Vibrations fans. Tell you what....you could fill a whole magazine just about these guys eh! Carl Fisher.....songwriter extraordinaire.
  5. Hi Kev, The Indalo Soul Club of Spain is on every month in Mojaca. No scooter involvement, as far as I know we are the only rare soul club on the Costas.) ie. we play 45s (and lots of good uns too). There are a number of Northern/Motown nights on the Costas but none of them bear any lance to what you would recognise as "a scene". Most are commercial DJs 'tagging' their nights. The Valencia Soul Club weekend is 12/13 April and looks to be shaping up as a blinder. Can't wait. The Hitsville Rare Soul Weekender IV (Espana) is provisionally booked for the second weekend in September. More details later this Spring as I firm things up. If you're moving to the Murcia Region Kev, get in touch as I have a few things in the pipeline and may be able to assist you if you're planning a venture. Rare Soul is on the move in Spain. Looking forward to it all.
  6. Eh? Wash yer lugs out you loonie! Saw 'the lad' at Prestatyn. He had beer but no records in his hands. You've not 'trained' him right.
  7. I sold a W/Demo (VG+) for 150UKP just before Xmas. Upgraded to a MINTER for $2.00!
  8. VICKERS!! I told you it was 1976!! You suvverners eh? You do makes I larf!
  9. Hi Albert, I think there are at least two different mixes of the song. I've only got the original one but I think one of the 'reissues' features either a different take or mix. Hasn't one got some extra congas/bongos or something? I'm sure someone will have the definitive answer. See you in 3 weeks.
  10. Excellent! Another one to add to the list. Cheers.
  11. I always thought the original was on Bullet Records. I've only ever seen a W/Demo of the Bullet release though, anyone got a stocker? PS. Isn't there also a Green/Yellow and White Yew copy?
  12. Evening Al, 5 LPs? mmmmm.....another toughie...if I HAD to grab 5 the it would be... Marvin Gaye - What's Going On - Tamla (Always makes me smile this album, even with the nature of much of the material. It's that good). Hesitations - Soul Superman - (Pied Pier at their height). Spyder Turner - Stand By Me - MGM Demo - (Terra Shirma brilliance by an underated vocalist. Had he 'made' Motown he'd have been huge). Tempests - Would You Believe - Smash - (Not a bad track on either side. Complete proof that real soul music is color blind). Rhetta Highes - Relight My Fire - Tetragrammaton (Mike Terry's done a lot of wonderful work as we both appreciate, but for me this is his finest hour. Slick, sublime, clean arrangement, simple and that's the beauty of it). Had to make it 6 as I realised I'd no "Best Of..." So....Chartbusters #5
  13. House on fire, only time to grab 5 45s! For me: Enchanters - I Paid For The Party - Loma W/Demo Jackie Beavers - Bring Me All Of Your Heartaches - Grandland Jackie Wilson - Beautiful Day - Brunwick W/Demo Marvin Gaye - What's Going On - Tamla W/Demo Deena Johnson - The Breaking Point - Wild Duece W/Demo All five of them inevitably end up on the Technics at home when enjoying a few scoops with Mates, sure sign of quality. 5 LPs next?
  14. But the VJ DEMO looks a million times nicer Roger!
  15. Pint of lager and a packet of crisps!
  16. Hi Ian, The use of the same footage was a cop out. You're right, the 'Burning" programme seemed like a repeat of the Motown programme at times. With the size of the BBC's budget you'd have thought they could have researched the Motown programme better too. The early days of Gordy's move into music were completely absent. No mention of Billy Davis, Marv Johnson, The Satintones/Voicemasters, Anna or any other of the building blocks that led to his initial foray with Tamla. I suppose the programme was aimed at the general public and they relate the Motown logo to the Big 5. It was well presented, but lacked a lot of essence. Sort of 'glossy' but not enough info. One point about the SITSOM documentary though is that the programme wasn't about the original vocalists, (I'm not sure if you're correct about them declining - I was under the impression that Slutsky didn't want the vocalists involved as it would then just become yet another documentary about them and not the musicians). I think SITSOM acheived it's aim of enlightening people about the band but the omission of Mike Terry and Popcorn Wylie still leaves a huge gap in the story of "The Sound Of Young America". Still enjoyable though, for sure. Enjoyed the history of MC5 and The Stooges too.
  17. Tony, Are you including "I Ain't Lyin"? Yet another JJ outing that has passed people by.
  18. Rumour only as far as I know Al. Had most of the UK stuff over the years but never saw or heard of anyone who had one. Nice to see you and Judi last weekend, even if it was short Mate.
  19. Great double sider. I hadn't heard the flip "I'll Get Over it" until I picked up a Demo in Pittsburgh last year. Well underated and if played by a 'name' would go huge no doubt.
  20. Lost count of the number of times I've thought....wonder if there's an issue/demo of this? Only to see one eventually. Latest one was: Harold Andrews - Since I talked To My Baby - HLS W/DEMO. Keith Williams came up with one. Now nestling in Box marked H. Anyone else got one? Must be someone out there.
  21. Then the answer to that particular question would be: Mary Wells - My Guy - Motown - 1964 Although I suspect that The Miracles - Shop Around was the first #1 Berry Gordy enjoyed, (1960), but of course that was on the Tamla imprint.
  22. Hi Guys, Completely inaccurate. Wikepedia at it's worst. Supremes reached #1 with Baby Love on Stateside 19 Nov 1964 Four Tops reached #1 with Reach Out on Tamla Motown 27 Sep 1966 Smokey and the Miracles reached #1 with TOAC on Tamla Motown on 12 Sep 1970 Mr Rimmer got it right. First time the name of Motown was on a label that reached #1 was The Four Tops.
  23. Anyone got a copy of: Harold Andrews - Since I Talked To My Baby - HLP W/Demo at a reasonable price?
