  1. Dont know too much about all this modern shite that has nothing at all to do with soul music but I reckon the best genuine discovery over the last few years has to be Crying time by Brenda Holloway. https://the.soulclub.org/stream/Brenda_Holl...Crying_Time.ram
  2. Isnt this off an advert thats on the telly at the moment?
  3. Either that or a really bad phone line
  4. Played this to Pete down the phone a couple of weeks ago and he reckoned it could be played at a soul night. Its got something about it but Im not sure. Its Pretty little baby by Teddy Brown.
  5. Not bad at all Pete in fact very nice , would probably sound better with a few listens. By the way I'll put up a soundfile of that Starline 45 I played to you down the phone a couple of weeks ago which you reckoned could be played at a soul night and see what everyone thinks.
  6. I played Footsee at the Derby Alldayer in May but it was'nt that dreadful Wigans chosen few on Disco Demand it was The Chosen Few's load of Wank on US Roulette.
  7. Sounds great to me Pete I was under the impression you were going to play stuff like The liquidator . The Iresaletis and Uptown top ranking. PS Ill give you a ring tomorrow.
  8. And another that I have , Irresistable by Tammi Terrell . Sublime
  9. Deon Jackson - His greatest recording on Solid Smoke. Ive got this LP and if you havent got one I strongly recommend it. Every track on there is superb , not one filler on either side. Did he ever make a bad record?
  10. Dont know if The Stranger was on a compilation album Brett but its certainally on The Nitty Gritty on UK (S)TML 11135 by Gladys Knight and the Pips. Superb track. The Marvelettes also did a version of The Stranger on Their album Sophisticated soul but this is nowhwere near as good as the Gladys Knight version
  11. I will be running and organising my first soul night this Friday night in Wolverhampton and I'm feeling a little nervous at the moment . Its a small venue that holds around 150 people but I've had a positive response allready from potential paying customers . Im very happy about the DJ line Up , Expensive sound system and venue which I have lavished money on that me and Pete Smith tested out the other night at the venue which sounded like a bag of shite but I have resolved this problem now , venue location which is superb , convident about my performance behind the decks , but I have put myself up on the first spot of the night and have been toying around what to play . Dawn reckons everything I'm playing at home at the moment is far too obscure and will clear the floor , so I have now decide to go with a steady mixture of Northern , Motown & R& b classics. Here is a few sounds I will probably play . Out on the streets again- Candy & the Kisses- Scepter. I cried my life away - Tommy Navarro - Dejac Harlem - Bill Withers - Sussex. Leaving here - Eddie Holland - Motown. Why when love is gone - Isley Brothers - Tamla Watchdog - Dorothy Williams - Volt. Mellow fellow - Etta James - Argo. Or I might change my mind in the meantime but it will be along these lines , whatever it is I'm sure it will be a night of superb music.

  13. Hope you aint playing that sort of shite next friday Pete
  14. Three cheapies I played yesterday with brilliant B sides. Theres no love left - Isley Brothers - flip to This old heart of mine. Where did you go? - Four Tops - Flip to Ask the lonely. Baby Ive got it - Jimmy Ruffin - Flip to What becomes of the broken hearted. Why when love is gone - Isley Brothers - flip to Take me in your arms.
  15. I know he is not the most popular figure on the northern soul scene but after reading an article in The Record Collector magazine maybe from the past year makes you realise how important Ian Levine was initially. While his (obviouslly rich) parents where on vacation in the States in the late 60s ,at a young age he was scouring the local junk shops and discovering the most amazing sounds and bringing them back to the UK and breaking them. Imagine when he discovered and then played JJ Barnes - Please let me in for the first time , its enough to send shivers down your spine. Imagine that same record been discovered and played today.
  16. Nothing much lately as Ive been spending all my money on decks , amp , mixer , concorde cartridges , mic , speakon leads etc for my new soul night. Was talking to a friend of mine on Sunday who had The panic is on by Roy Hamilton on UK MGM out of a charity shop for 10p earlier on this week!
  17. And me Karen , verrrrry sleazzzyyyy but not one to set the dancefloor alight
  18. I am the undisputed king of the boot sales. Up most Sunday mornings at 5 am and trawling through tons of shite but believe me there just is not much stuff soul wise that comes out nowadays , it really is hard work! 2 nice albums I have had the last couple of weeks for 20p and 50p with interesting tracks. Super soul on 1967 Pye International with tracks by Chuck Jackson , Tommy Hunt , Roscoe Robinson , J J Barnes and Bobby Hebb to name a few. Second one is Blues and soul on 1966 Marble Arch with obscure tracks from The Entertainers , Mitty Collier - My party , Brilliant! and Two in the morning by Spooners Crowd , Hmm interesting.
  19. I never went there but my missus was going there all the time when she was 14 , reckoned she loved it there. I think the buildings still there but it looks derelict. There was also Willenhall baths just up the road from there which I did go to which was a decent soul night.
  20. Around 1975/76 when I was 14 or 15 I remember travelling to Walsall town hall to my first real soul night on the bus and a tall lad in a long leather coat going on about a record by Lee Roye called Tears bieng the greatest northern soul record and agreeing with him though I'd never even heard it ! When I got there I can remember the dancefloor erupting to The Kid by Andre Brasseur and thinking it was the greatest record I had ever heard. Cant remember anything else played that night. Funny how things stick in your mind.
  21. You are right Col. I had one when I was young. Fetching nearly as much as rare soul 45s on Ebay nowadays https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ssPageName=WDVW
  22. Ill give you a bag of doughnuts and a scan of the Marvellos 45
  23. Your version is booked at £1200 in The Tim Brown guide. In my opinion nowhere near as good as The Marvellos effort which starts really slow but builds into superb tune. Hope this soundclip works.
  24. The Marvellos version is "We go together" on Loma 2045. It is on my CD from the recent CD swap. Did you get yours OK Dan ? Will see if I still have it on my PC if not will dig the record out and put up a soundclip.
