  7. I've never been so depressed
  8. I received word from him a few weeks ago. He's living in Las Vegas, doing the gig circuit there, seems very happy, still married to Clella-Anne, though I'm not sure where she'll hang out in a sinful city. He's recording and performing live still and I'm sure he'd come over if invited. He's on Facebook and Myspace too. L x
  9. A friend forwarded this link: https://www.beonscreen.com/uk/tv-shows/audi...n-soul-2347.asp
  10. What was Tony Blackburn's NS name? (Gareth you know). He works at my place sometimes and once when a colleague of mine was away on a shoot with him I texted the colleague telling him to call TB by his other name, and he sent me back a photo he'd taken of Tony flicking me the finger. So I guess he's not so proud of it.
  11. I get sent dave's list here's his email davewithers2001@yahoo.com
  12. Yes Ian, I wish I understood it better. I guess it's exciting records like Exus Trek that got me into Northern though, because they were unusual. Ditto when I first heard Towanda Barnes thought it sounded a bit like Motorhead! There's a whole bunch of Northern records that I really don't get and I think it's the ones that follow a pop formula, intro-verse-chorus-verse etc, and played in an obvious key which would be chosen for pop as most palatable, ensuring a hit. But of course it's impossible to sumarise and you should never say "all northern". As for writing a book about it, you, Rachel and Michele should definitely get together, I know a good graphic designer.... Lisa x
  13. I didn't mean to make it all sound complicated, I was notoriously shit at music at school and that's why I thought it could be simplified. But now I'm a bit more confused, I thought Doby Gray would be a minor, that piano riff is deeply depressing sounding to me, but I find the Roy Roberts record very exciting, so I guess I'm a minor key type of person. Maybe the soul community can be split into two types this way, regardless of which football team you support.
  14. https://www.guardian.co.uk/notesandqueries/...,-20342,00.html I saw this posed in the Notes & Queries section of the Guardian and it's something I've always wondered about Northern. Some records touch you so deep as to make you feel high, even though you know they're essentially sad, is this because they're in a minor key? Or am I simplifying it? Maybe it's not the key but other elements that get us going on the dance floor or crying in the toilet. Any theories?
  15. I just bought "I'm gonna love you...." with the kelly patterson vocal which is a beaut. I understand he wasn't encouraged to sing for years which is understandable but his voice has become so iconic so thank god he did in the end
  16. Thanks guys I'll try ironing it, my Corby trouser press is out of action
  17. I've got a copy of "Beggin'" by the 4 Seasons, it's american and I think it's vinyl, any tips on how to straighten out a kink at the edge? It cost nothing and I have another so I can try extreme measures...softening it in the oven before flattening it between books perhaps?
  18. I think Jim may have been the first Northern soul dancer I ever saw in the flesh. Like a very special gate-keeper he could always be found at the entrance to the "Talc Room" of Happiness Stans in the early nineties, busting prize moves, his long curly hair and legs flicking out catching unsuspecting visitors as they tried to get to the bar, only to feel the sweat hit them a second later. He would always be there with Liam, always the same spot, both of them going at it from beginning to end. There'd sometimes be a chance to chat when he'd take a drink, and he would always be really pleasant and a good laugh, I don't think he ever got drunk or took drugs which makes this conclusion extra unfair. Then on weeks when things continued onto the 100 club he'd be there ripping up the floor til day-break. I visited Jim a few months ago at his parents home in West London. He was chipper and we had a great chat about music and scenes. I always thought if anything his enthusiasm would keep him going. He'll be a great loss to the soul scene. Lisa x
  19. I have most of the LPs and "Teach me How to Fly" on a 45, which is a bit to psychedelic for the soul scene I think. The LPs are very experimental. "Black Gold of the Sun" was revived for the chill out market in the 90s. I know Gareth's favourite is "Peace at Least" from the least valuable Christmas album, it starrts off dead corny, but the build up of emotion towards the end is very moving, good one to slap on at xmas dos.
  20. very well indeed. It has beautiful harmonies, it's very soulful and still a little funky. It has that great sound of the crossover of soul and trippiness of the time, but best of all the break down is very cool and perfect in length for a bit of the old floorwork if you're that way inclined. Shame it's not on 45...hmmm...
  21. thanks man
  22. I wrote a letter to the Observer Music monthly regarding her comments. She seems to be obsessed with her age and keeping up with trends. What she said was plainly wrong - the div.
  23. Dudes and Dudettes I wonder does anyone know who the writer McCall is, credited on the Rotary Connection's "Love Me Now", the opening track on "Dinner Music"?
  24. Ha that was the answer to my other querie! Christina Aguillerra sampled Hippy Skippy. Great record, the late That Girl Lynn used to play the instrumental version down at Happiness Stans, aaaah...Happy days, as Phil Tufnell would say
