Gene Latter-Sign On The ....................... Orig?
dthedrug replied to Northern Soul Uk's topic in Look At Your Box
HI ALL...I have a few in my POP box I will take a look for you, it's a interesting label to collect I don't recall seeing a full release listing and it's full of eclectic music, most people associate the label with the pop soul hits put out on SPARK NORTHERN SOUL Wigan's Ovation, being the worse example of mid 7ts intrusion by money grabbing opportunists on our scene GOD bless them, the stain of these releases will remain in the publics mind for ever, like "baggy trousers", Gene Latters "sign on the dotted line" was a very powerful song with a good dance beat that well suited the scene in 72 with 100mph play it loud dance ability, you can see how tunes like this one made it on the scene as follow up to "Out on the floor", I was lucky enough to have the silver copy (first) at the time, and it might be odd to say in 2014, but I was proud to have it as a pride of place 45 in my record box in 71, I'm sure it come out on both silver label designed SPARK,. Maybe back in 71/72 the intake of certain chemicals made the record, but in 2014 it still sounds good to me as a perfect example of the roots of NORTHERN SOUL. I think for those younger people who joined the scene well after the early 7ts, they should take time out and study the roots of the NORTHERN SOUL scene especially take a look at some of the 100mph 45s that were big in 71/72 and why people spent Saturday nights dancing in the middle of nowhere in Bedfordshire?? Trust me they were great days. DAVE K. -
HI ALL.. Pete that explains a lot, and why I have never found a copy with out the GS, IT'S OBVIOUSE now you have mentioned it CHEERS, HAPPY NEW YEAR DAVE

How Much For A Joe Douglas Crazy / Something To Brag About
dthedrug replied to Lambretta Gp 200's topic in Look At Your Box
HI ALL....This record by Joe Douglas reminds me I had 10 copy's in the mid 8ts at £4 each, I sold each copy for £8 to £12. My copy went when I sold my US collection in 92, since then I have never seen it sell for under£50 & today I would value it at £80 to £100. like so many records that I used to sell cheap in the 8ts, they all go for good money today, I have assumed that there were many copy's about, how wrong was I DAVE K -
HI ALL ...SEE MY LAST ENTRY IN THE RECORD CLUB, HAPPY NEW YEAR DAVE K

HI ALL.. Picked this great LP up in a local charity shop along with 8 other LPs paid £18 for the lot, this was the best by far, and in ex condition, very rare to find this sort of stuff, which makes it even better HAPPY NEW YEAR DAVE K

HI ALL & A HAPPY NEW YEAR REGGAE REGGAE REGGAE, IT'S THE BEAT THAT SHUFFLES THE FEET, TO A WELDING BEAT. BOSS! Believe it or not, it's 45 years plus that the new sound of JA has been with us, but the term REGGEA has a different meaning for most members of the public, for me it means a general term that covers Jamaican music from 67 to 82. and for many the term Skinhead Reggae is used for the original sound from 67 to 72, as you may be aware it is a term I dislike, as the word SKINHEAD was a media term put on the later MOD/boot boy period of the 6ts, however for those of you who were to young to be about in that period it seems it has more positive than negative connotations to you, so I will go along with it, Having got that of my chest I have playing some of my original sounds today, and I was wondering how many of you have the classic "tons of gold" by VAL BENNETT? or "the return of the liquidator" Harry J all stars, Harry J 6621 A, A great record indeed, with it's BOSS B side "All day" in your collection? as I do not sell my records I cant tell you the current value, but I can state that it was by pure luck that I had a copy in early 71, found in DAVIDS BOOKSHOP LETCHWORTH, It is the B side that makes this record for me,(not that I'm in any way dismissing the A side., By the way, the 10" LIQUIDATOR from sanctuary records is a must, just for "CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD" alone. I intended to put these tracks up for you to listen to, but could not get it together? maybe on U CHUBE or Pete Smith may help locate, well worth tracking all versions, you can buy blind as they are recommended by myself as must have 45s for your collection, GOOD LUCK in 2014 DAVE K

HI ALL..FRANK, Back in 2009 I posted my thoughts about The Frank Wilson since then I have sold my copy to a top dealer for £40 as he had a customer who wanted it, and this has set a bench mark for the going value of this 1st pressing under the name of Eddie Foster, However the top rarest bootlegs that I have are the SOUL SOUNDS white label pressings of 69-70, & the Ambassadors on JOX all UK pressed Bootlegs from the 1960s are much rarer than any US pressing, but the price may not correspond to the 45 DAVE K

HI ALL..The disc you are looking for is local to me, however you probably no this if you have now got a scan, the other 444 demo of 2 unfinished tunes that I had in the 8ts via Soul Sam is or was again in the hands of a local collector why I got rid of it heaven knows. I did offer it to Mick first however he turned it down, I got a copy of Herb Ward "strange change" & Holly Maxwell and other bits for it, which I thought was a good deal back then I robbed myself or did I? DAVE K

HI ALL...For those people who like Jimmy James "come to me softly" he first did a cut on the famous WIRL LABEL in 63? it is nice but not as good as the later soulful version that was recorded at PYE STUDIOS in 65 released on PICADILLY, & also on MARBLE ARCH mal 823 - "this is Jimmy James" - Jimmy James & the Vagabonds 5star LP. A must have LP to own if you want a classic lp with great soul, tracks are side 1 - come to me softly, I feel alright, I don't wanna cry, I cant get home to my baby, ain't love good, ain't love proud. side 2. never like this before, no good to cry, you showed me the way, little boy blue. hi diddly dee dum dum, I can recommend this LP, & all his music, many gems still to get proper exposure, like the flip side of "red red wine", I have also put up the Hortense Ellis (Alton Ellis sister) "i'll come softly", R&B JB- 101, A hard one to find, in a original R&B DISC PROMO SLEEVE. (I kid you not) they only made 1 per record, the value of both versions by JJ on 45s & the LPs are hard to value, as is the R&B 45.However much you pay these records are rare and you should not leave them once seen DAVE K

HI ALL...GUTTED is word that is meant to represent your feelings & emotions of loss of something or someone you have loved dearly, something very precious & meaningful that can't just be replaced, it is a word that describes a scenario of a traumatic event or situation of LOSS. KIMBO'S statement is a familiar one to any trained Counsellor, The LOSS Factor is a fact of modern life as we trust those people who have a similar passion & shared common interest, LOSS has 3 parts the past = sadness, the present = anger, the future = fear, these 3 emotional states will jump from one emotional state to another in an instant, and have an impact on the psyche that will change the personality of the individual, The time spent in this emotional state can not be measured it can last a lifetime, In the situation that KIMBO faces there is no quick solution to fix the problem of trust, a period of time passing will delimit the good guys from the bad, I feel for anyone in this situation of un soul like situation, that is part of our scene, and hope he finds the culprit sooner than later DAVE K

Uk Northern / 60 's Soul Demo 45' S Singles
dthedrug replied to Glynthornhill's topic in Record Sales
HI ALL... Pete I agree however, in the case of Nancy Ames the DEMO is even rarer than the issue, unlike the Carl Douglas or Jimmy Thomas & also Little Hank, Sly & the Family Stone on Columba issue. in the real DEMO or ISSUE of these records are worth picking up and NOC SHOULD NOT PUT ANY ONE OFF the fact is it's a rare record as I have a minty DEMO I would do a trade for it :g:DAVE K -

HI All.... At first I though sooty was a off duty copper with his detail of his night out, I found his affirmation of being drug free touching,(bet he likes a pissup?) and the 10 years of missing All-nighters can that be true, why in GODS name would you want to deprive yourself man? Sooty I enjoyed your statement I mean write up DAVE K

HI ALL....Only one problem with the EP, is that it's at half the volume of the 45 issue, why this is so & how it got through quality control is a mystery a long version is on the ASTRA LP NEW RELIGION, but not on all copies, got a brilliant B side on the 45 PICCADILLY 7N 35331 "I don't want to cry" makes this a must have item. DAVE K

HI ALL.... Hope I have not misread the gist of the post above, but all popular music that means post 1950s are based around a 12 bar beat, most drummers drum the beat with hands or feat. it goes without saying that the skill is just the same for all genre's of all music, so yes POP JAZZ SOUL ROCK whatever type you want the thread is about the drummer, you cant dismiss the talent of 1 over the other based on who he plays the drums for?? HI ALL I saw Rory Gallagher in 1969 at the BLUESVILE 69 Cherry Tree Pub Welwyn Garden City, he was playing with his band the TASTE, the drummer also did a great solo, however it was Rory version of "sugar mama" it was outstanding, the BLUESVILE CLUBS took over the mantle that the RICKY-TICK CLUBS had done other clubs like the KLOOKS KLEEK, THE MIDLE EARTH ROUND HOUSE all supported the progressive blues sound of 68/9 sadly it turned into progressive rock then into HEAVY METAL, it's like the rare soul/northern soul scene turning into a cross over modern soul scene, bloody ridicules if you ask me, and it will never happen .................................................... what's that you say? DAVE K

HI ALL.....To start of there have been some of the worlds top drummers already mentioned, so I thought to go back to the 5ts to the big bands, when the members of the band played a solo in every set, however to start off. Can I mention my favourite film about a drummer, FRANK SINATRA in the film "the MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM" A great film to watch with an amazing music score, I recommend this powerful film as a masterpiece & a must watch before you die??/ My fave drummer/s are Louis Bellson & Buddy Rich, and possibly Ginger Baker & Keith Moon. the latter one is not the most skilled, but I have a passion for the WHO. Ginger was a member of CREAM who made being a being a 3 member group work better than any other, except for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, My top pick is Louis Bellson a fantastic drummer as is Buddy Rich please check them out on you chube' However I do recommend Louis Bellson LP Drumainia on COLUMBIA 33C 9040 if you can find it AS ALWAYS DAVE K louie belson lp a.pdflouie belson lp b.pdf

HI ALL Well there was 1 Martin the thumb, he was more of a left wing social drop out rather than a follower of Jesus, but you won't find him as I looked.....he must have got a lift DAVE K

HI ALL.....THIS IS A GOOD THREAD, However it does not mention the prices of each of the different copies, I am aware it can never be right but a gen idea of cost would be fine. I have a proper Demo that I got from the person who discovered it in the states in the early 7ts, I wonder who?....yep Mick Smith. DAVE K
