  1. Hi I really have not got a clue what the value of your classic Jap 45 will end up at, as it is unique at a guess the min value is £5K and that is very conservative, it certainly is an investment, I was going to buy the EP from a mutual friend & collector of rare soul, as you say it is rare in it's own right, I can't say what price he asked on a open forum, however I considered it to be a bargain, in the end I could not see it as a part of my collection as I collect UK & US originals from the northern scene 68 to 77 with a few exception's, I have spent years trying to find the Gene Pitney cover of Doug Banks "keep on dancing" on a European EP, this is not me having a laugh, it's not the holy grail but very rare? DAVE K
  2. HI DAVE... DID THIS RARE 45 COME OUT BEFORE OR AFTER THE MAMAS & PAPAS EP? DAVE K
  3. HI ALL JIMMY RAYE IS BLOODY HARD TO TELL, I HAV 2 COPIES THAT LOOK IDENTICAL ONE WITH THE S AND 1 WITHOUT, NO DIFFERANCE IN SOUND, CONCLUSION IS THEY ARE BOTH BOOTS? THE S MARK HAS BEEN ADDED, OR THE COPY WITHOUT THE S MARK IS A 1ST PRESS ORIGANAL & THE OTHER IS A 2ND PRESS ORIGANAL, EITHER WAY IN THE CASE OF THIS RECORD IF THEY ARE BOOTS THEY ARE AS GOOD AS THE ORIGANAL BUT A LOT CHEAPER, I'M NOT ENDORSING BOOTLEGS AT ALL, JUST MAKING A STATEMENT OF FACT, NEVER BUY A COPY UNSEEN IS MY ADVISE DAVE K
  4. HI All you must have seen on TV them adverts for steam cleaners, I got a hand held one for £20, it worked well on edge type warps, place edge of record on safety glass, (a shelf out of your fridge is ideal) from about 10" work the steamer from glass to the edge of the record, blast for 5 seconds then press a flat piece of glass over the warp, you could add a weight, please practice on any old record several times before trying to repair a rare record, DAVE K
  5. HI ALL only just watched this, must say I did enjoy it, I must make my usual comment about these documentaries, and one which got me a warning from this site, I'm talking about the reference to drug use on the scene, this documentary did not shy away from the subject, I won't dwell on the subject on to say it was very much a part of the history off Northern Soul then and for some still. DAVE K
  6. HI ALL I have found all reply's on this thread to be realistic & honest, thank god you are not sales people, However I took the question single deck sound system, to mean a set up similar to what was put together in 1960s Jamaica, but like I have a bespoke system with sound system features, Of course Sound System terminology for many means a HI FI unit, were you can set up the very best eqpt (not always the most expensive), once you have your sound balanced to your satisfaction, you will have a greater appreciation of your music, A double deck disco or single deck set up is by it's nature not going to stay put, it is meant to be robust as it get moved about, although many pubs nowadays have built in sound systems, it's well worth checking them out, Talking about belt driven decks, reminds me of 2 I have made by DUAL they were decent with a ROTEL amp & Wharfdale speakers, I also agree that makers like GEMINI have great stuff with good output sound ideal for the spare room setup, this is a good thread & I hope some good ideas come from it, NICE ONE DAVE K
  7. HI K Well Done on this sale you stood your ground and got the right price, this makes you a SOUL SISTER GRADE 1 in my book. DAVE K
  8. HI ALL... YES PETE my 1st copy was a red issue, I got from SOUL BOWL 75 The record was bootlegged a few time most common are DEMOS, HOWEVER the red issue pressing is good, but MODERN is smaller on label, the MEL WILLIAMS was also booted in a similar way. I have a blank of Danny Monday which I assume is a bootleg, DAVE K
  9. HI ALL.. HERES A MUSIC FACT FOR LIFE (make a good thread I think). Over 10 years ago at least, I used to travel to KEELE ALL-NIGHTER with Mick Smith, on our journey from Wolves to Soul on Spoon, Mick like to listen to tapes I did, in particular,, the RADIO SHOWS from PCRL The Sunday afternoon soul show, I hope they will forgive me for forgetting the hosts name, also any one else? there was a conversation with Richard (popcorn) Wylie, in the interview the host played Luther Ingram's version of "I spy for the FBI" Popcorn stated that Luthers version is In fact the original & Jamos was the 2nd version, and went on to become a world wide hit, both of us did not know that fact, I wonder what Luther thought about the Jamo Thomas version becoming the big hit,? I have not got a copy of "Exsus trek, who is credited as writer / producer / publisher it can't be JT DAVE K
  10. Hi All there is loads of stuff on the web on sound systems, from home hi fi to full studio sound equipment or 10K PA, my tip is buy quality equipment, only get what you need for the use you intended it for, check out (as you are doing) what the recommendation from other sound men, Since the time I got my 1st record player (dansette) I always wanted better, rubbish equipment in the long run can be more expensive than pro gear, that's a fact, I have a bespoke JA sound system which would cost about £3500 to build or £6K built. RECORD DECK Without doubt a Techniques 1210 is the best deck, used by all bad boys & DJ around the world they hardly changed since they were first made in the early 7ts, there are many decks that look like a Techniques, but if you want the best sound it is the professional pick, Other decks to use for the authentic reproduction of SOUL or REGGAE 6ts vinyl are GARRARD 301 & 401, I picked up a 401 deck from a car boot sale with a SMC pick up arm for £2 they sell for £500, the 301 is the deck of choice to play REGGAE, with it's large anti warp turntable, these now sell for big money £1k is common, early DISCO deck that are worth picking up is the Garrard SP25 mk2, you can still get these for £25 but they are great for disco play as they are belt driven ideal for northern, but belt driven decks are of no use if you want to scratch rewind the record , so t's a Techniques 1210 £300 second hand, they have stopped the manufacture of the decks in the last couple of years, so I recommend you check out your local cash converter shop, for good second hand amps pre amps decks & speakers, always take someone with you when buying sound equipment and ask for a demo to see it working, best speakers are JBL, modern speakers are much improved than ones that are 10 years old, so buy new, amps valve are the best for soul & reggae, 500 watt Crown are the best but there are so many good ones out there, however you really need a min 400 watts of power = 200 watt per channel (stereo) your pre amp & EFX again get the best you can afford, To conclude if you are not sure ask someone who knows to help you and go on line as there is everything on there for you to look at, if you need photos of my set up, let me know. Hope this helps? DAVE K
  11. HI ALL... Clues more clues, I don't think you need any more, yes I was pissed of after months of waiting I was inform it had been stolen,, after 1 year with no hope off ever seeing it I was given £20 the price I had paid for the record, 2 weeks later the record turned up, not stolen at all just mislaid, when I asked for it, I was turned down as I had received payment, yes I was a wee bit gutted, one of 10001 story's in the strange world of northern soul, DAVE K
  12. HI ALL, MY COPY WAS FOUND IN A LONDON CHARITY SHOP, COST ME A COUPLE OF QUID, SOLD IT TO MICK FOR A GOOD PRICE, EVENTHOUGH IT HAD AN EDGE WARP, VALUE £800 WITH WARP MINT £1500 TO START, EASY DAVE K

  14. HI ALL,,,, HERES A "MAGIC TOUCH" FACT, For a future Prime time Quiz call "listen to this classic" Q. which stalwart from the NORTHERN SOUL SCENE, A TOP MIDLANDS DJ, who borrowed my copy for a few months to play? at the time it was the only copy about, clue 2 he also borrowed my copy of the Silhouettes "not me baby" on GOODWAY, That I never saw again? What a guy DAVE K
  15. HI ALL "THE MAGIC TOUCH" MELBA MOORE was discovered by Ady , who I believe got a dub plate made as the record was unreleased, on the same tape that had "don't cry sing along with the music" which was spun at the Torch VAVA & the first couple of Wigan casino all nighters, in 1973, Ady made the record an integral part of his sett in 85? the record was so popular he made it available on the 2nd 100 club anniversary (although it was not} my copy was given to me by a real friend 100 club DJ Mick Smith, which carried on until #17, when people were paying good money for the latest disc on the night, I have received a couple from Ady in the last few years, I think when it comes to finding new undiscovered soul Gems Ady has the MAGIC TOUCH DAVE K
  16. HI ALL... Sorry to anyone who could not take on my humour but I just could not help myself, I'm surprised I did not state make a donation to Ady, however yes I'm aware of the price and would never get in the way of someone sale, but as a collector who got 300 45s in the last 2 weeks paying top $$$ for certain records is a bit much, it's easy for me to say this, as I have most of what I need, DAVE K
  17. HI ALL... SMC a great label & rare to-boot, even the BEE B BUTLER 45s although cheap compared with most on the label are great soul records, I always assumed SMC was a NEW YORK LABEL?? DAVE K

HI ALL... Yes very nice, I was there, you have got a nice record, however when you have as many records as me trying & buying every record in it's rarest state takes a lot of cash these days, if I had loads of cash I could ring mick smith and get what I wanted, but I have done that with previous collections, this is my final/ 3rd UK collection, only need a few to complete, then I will look at upgrading items, the issue is just as rare by the way?? DAVE K from WOLVES.
  19. HI ALL...£180 ? If you go to London & find an old Police box, you can travel back to a time when GODs dog was a puppy head for OXFORD CIRCUS TUBE, cross the road turn right and walk to the 100 CLUB as they were giving them away FREE, I'M BEING SILLY, BUT UNTIL YOU GET A COPY, YOU CAN COPY MY ONE, STICK IT ON AN OLD DUSTY, PLAY THE SONG FROM A KENT CD, This may give some pleasure? no! I thought not, £180 please don't pay that much mate please. Dave k
  20. HI ALL.... OLD RECORD SHOPS, While working for the YMCA 10 years ago, they opened a shop in RUGELY STAFFS. It still had all the fixtures & fittings still in place no soul records but I did get loads of ROCK & ROLL 45s, The YMCA would not allow me to remove anything, shame I often wonder if it all got dumped in the end?? DAVE K

HI ALL Heres a few UK MGM ISSUES & DEMOS, The BOK TO BACK ISSUE HAS IT'S ORIGANAL CENTRE IN / PAPER TOREN BY STICKER REMOVAL, RECORD IS EX, JUST IN CASE YOU THOUGHT IT WAS A POOR JOB?? It is also a surprise to see that most of the 45s were TWISTED WHEEL & TORCH PLAYS in comparison with other UK labels, there are a load more in my collection, but these are some of the best. DAVE K
  22. HI ALL One of the most popular soul records of all time in the UK, hence all the reissues, mind you it may be common to most, my copy is what makes me & others collect UK, Not the rarest on the label but still a very hard find, not sure of current value, at a guess £300 but Pete Smith will know DAVE K my copy
  23. HI ALL. FLYNNY I WILL TELL YOU HOW THEY ENDED UP OVER THERE, 15 - 20 YEARS AGO AT MOST RECORD FAIRS, A MAN FROM JAPAN ATTENDED JUST TO BUY AS MANY SOUL & REGGAE RECORDS INITIALY THEY MOPPED UP THE BLUEBEAT LABEL THEN DOCTOR BIRD, DEALERS WOULD NOT PART WITH ANYTHING TILL THEY HAD OFFERD THE TO MISTER JAP? DAVE K
