  3. The only problem with the Out Of Copyright merchants is that the artists and label owners won't earn anything for their great work. Ace / Kent still license and pay royalties on pre 1963 recordings as Melvin Davies for one will confirm
  4. I ended up with 130ish of the Sam Dees, sold em for around a tenner, who would think such a common record would fetch the price it does today? Speaks volumes for the desirabilty of it.
  5. Does anyone know the names of the etcs who are in the film but aren't listed?
  6. Yep I knew Love Is A Trap had been a Morecambe spin when I got it- I think!
  7. Blimey Ali, I'm amazed. She wasn't particularly enamoured with it when I did an interview with her in Germany though she performed it there because it was the organisers all time favourite record. She must be softening in her old age. Send her my regards. Ady
  8. The producer Paul Polletti actually told us these were the wrecking crew guys but the great drummer hal blaine couldn't get the rhythm and they sent him out for beers while bazza snuck in behind the drums, did it in one take and hal never knew!
  9. Yes please Steve, no rush on it. Ady
  10. Ace would like to borrow an Ex or better copy of this one please. Cds and credits in return. Cheers Ady
  11. South of the river Dave. The best I went to was one on the bridge by Little Venice on the Harrow Road, some bloke had boxes unplayed UK records back to the early 60s. I think the soul had gone but there were hundreds of great 60s group records about £2 each.
  12. And Dave Bupp is a huge soul music fan still. We started off our relationship with a row for not including the Olympics Mine Exclusively on the first vol of Mirwood but ended up good email friends. The good news is we've just got final clearances for the second Darrow Fletcher CD too; the 60s sides. "Hey Ady, A few years back I sent you guys a challenge!!! To put together the complete works of Darrow Fletcher. I never believed for one minute that you guys would take on the challenge. But I knew if anybody could do it, you could!!! I’m waiting for the first DF release as we speak. Ordered it yesterday. I just want to say thank you to you guys for releasing DF’s work. WHEN CAN WE EXPECT THE 60’S DF RELEASE? What kills me is this: If it wasn’t for you guys in Europe & Asia, American soul music from the past would never see the light of day. You’ll never know how much some of us Americans appreciate the work ACE/KENT has been doing to keep American Soul alive. If we waited for the American record companies to release our music, we’d die of old age. My hat’s off to you guys!!!! And please, keep up the good work!!!! We Need You! Thanks Again Ady, Dave Bupp The Magnificent Men"
  13. Probably because I told you Family was the best live gig I'd ever seen. i had virtually all the freakbeat biggies at the time and sold them at just about exactly the wrong time lol. I've still got a load though so I'll auction 'em off one day.
  14. The shop was around at the height of my swanning round the London shops scoring and flogging records for a living. I think he had been a partner with Stan & Phil who also ran Rocks Off in Hanway St (old B&S Contempo shop) but split leaving Yves to the shop you mentioned. He was quite a character and developed an interest in cricket with no obvious links to the game. He used to close the shop early and spend his afternoons at Lords watching county games, something I as a big fan of the game, rarely manage. We must have wheeled and dealed loads of records but I can't think of one
  15. There's a great photo of James in the first Dave Hamilton CD and we used an alternate take of his 45 on that. The notes say that according to Dave & Joe Hunter he was shot by his girlfriend over something trivial. We have his original contract and signature in the vaults here, it's nice to see.
  16. Anything out of Detroit, I would have guessed he was a soul fan originally but is not on the soul scene as such. Nice chap and helps out when he can
  17. I see Bleeker Bob's record shop in Greenwich village where I first found the unnamed acetate that was christened the Fabulous Impacts came from has closed.
  18. No idea of the ration but I know we have a lot of royalty accounts for artists as well as label owners, and writers are even better protected than artists. When a certain company was bootlegging CDs by claiming they had the rights but didn't, they actually had to pay the publishing as it is a better protected area. Where a lot of people go wrong intentionally or not is in saying we've paid the publishing so it's all covered.
  19. No the chances aren't next to dead, we and similar companies pay royalties and publishing. It's funny you used Tobi Legend as an example we've been paying her royalties for years as Tobi Lark. If you want to contribute and ain't got the fabulous Dave Hamilton CDs with her songs on them buy them today and she will earn off them . Ady
  20. Yep artists can be as bad as exploitative label owners. Luckily there aren't many of either types in the business (percentage wise), i find musicians and singers to be honourable and most indie record label owners didn't expect to make a fortune.
  21. Almost by definition with Northern Soul acts the artist received next to sod all at the time as the records didn't sell-I know a few did but we're talking generally here. The record companies also charged costs against the recording and often weren't liable to pay royalties until those costs had been covered. The phrase used in the music business is "in the hole" meaning they are in negative royalty as the costs are more than the record has earnt. However if we approach an artist on a label that we have bought we usually (maybe always, I'm not 100 % sure) wipe the slate clean and start them off with a new standard royalty contract. Sam E Solo will finally get some royalties now the Pied Piper deal has been set up if we can contact him, I think Dave W has his details. There was skullduggery ndeed but hopefully we have learnt from that and treat people better. Artists do often misunderstand the situation. One artist who we have always gone out of our way to help once complained that a CD they were on had sold 126,567 copies but we had only accounted for a couple of thousand. I asked her where she had got her figures from and she said her daughter had seen it on Amazon. On investigation it was the 126, 567th best seller on the site at the time!
  22. Has anyone ever seen You Just Don't Know on any number apart from 113 and You Really Made it Good on anything other than 112?
  23. All correct apart from the date of Romark. Ta This Billy Williams was probably not a band leader, the last Romark was 73 at an educated guess.
  24. Same here but they're missing numbers in the sequence so I wondered if they existed? I've got Hannble (sic) Ta
