  1. I echo every single word of praise said about him. He was an example to everyone on how to live life; optimistic, positive and loving every minute of it that he could. I made him our first punter of the month on the 6TS web site purely because he was the ideal attendee at any event for all the qualities listed and for dancing like a whirling dervish all night. He could make the sparsest of nights look busy. My condolences go to his family and all his many good friends who have helped him through his last few tough years. If there's anything we can do to commemorate him on the 6TS site, please just ask. It's hard to believe we'll never see him again. Ady
  2. Jimmy Russell from Terry & The Tyrants/Turnarounds, just told me he'd been to Bobby's funeral. I met him in the 80s and he was a great personality, a real hustler but very friendly and fun with it. He had the Soultown label and several other productions Younghearts / Tempos being his most famous. He also recorded a rare vocal group record under his own name on Kent.
  3. I got a puny 6 but i did know Ain't No Mtn was Ashford Simpson not HDH! How the hell did he get on the show?
  4. We used an underdub with less instrumentation. Normally we wouldn't but it just sounded so good without it. I played it a few times.
  5. You'll be getting two and a half of the songs that Steve and Chalky mentioned so I'm sure you won't be disappointed. If anyone can help getting a few of the groovy flyers and posters about it would be appreciated. Addresses to ady.croasdell@btinternet.com Cheers Ady

It's Nancy Wilcox that I've been playing from original acetate for a few years. Ginger recently bought one off me too so you might have heard him play it. My Faves in no order Carla Thomas Little Ann Who Are You Trying To Fool Kenny Carter Finger and You'd better Get Hip Girl Both Sharon Scotts Ben E King Torture (but not Magic Touch though I love it and can see why it's so popular) Magicians I'm sure there are another couple i can't think of.
  9. A really sweet easy going guy with a big and happy family. Too unassuming to be a big star, he was tailor made for our scene and Walking Up A One Way Street didn't sell much outside of New Orleans and the UK. It was a unique style of soul that was so far removed from radio and mainstream soul that when you heard it in an Old Soul club you knew you were entering a different and exciting world. Willie was badly affected by Katrina and had to relocate to New Jersey for some time, I'm sure he would have kept singing into his 80s a truly sad loss.
  10. I just had a query about tickets and apparently www.seetickets.com are just waiting on one last bit of technical stuff and they should be on sale later this afto. To get the right gig just key in any of the artists names, or Kent's 25th. Ace will have them on sale early next week.
  11. Hi Diane the record company I work for recently bought the Era label so we'll be looking to do some work with Jesse over the next few months once we start our reissue project for that label. We recently had Jim Gilstrap sing Gonna Hang On In There for Sherlie Matthews (the song's writer) Mirwood Revue but it would be great to hear Jesse singing the original.
  12. He's next door compiling a Drifters CD but seems to be putting Simon Smith And His Amazing Dancing Bear on it for some reason! I told him.
  13. Now I've connected the two mugs, your natural solid with a severe haircut head and this air-brushed one on here. I was there in the capacity of Donna's roady but enjoyed myself and managed a dance or two. It's the first one apart from Carlow in Ireland in the 80s that I've ever been to and though the Snake did get an airing (nothing to do with the kilts) they also grooved to some classy Northern stuff too. Funnily half the crowd begged for the Snake and when Donna put it on the other half nearly lynched her. Quite a few 100 Clubbers there too in their beer and rolling in mud modes. One night did me though and I went off into deepest Suffolk for fresh air and the inevitable getting completely lost.
  14. He was a black doo-wop singer with the Crowns and did several projects in LA usually for Ruth Dolphin's Money and associated labels. This track and more info on his tragic death on CDKEND 267, The Soul Of Money Vol 2.
  15. Whey up Paul, It's an incredibly Tamla sounding non-Tamla track she cut in the mid 60s when she was probably moonlighting. From original master tape, no known discs were made. I'll have to dig it out again. 100 Club exclusive, don't cha know! Cheers Ady
  16. Out of all Simon's repress deals I would guess this was one of the more legitimate, Modern still had their studios and pressing plant and I'm sure a cash deal with someone at the company was possible. I bet he didn't pay his extra publishing costs but he could have got a thousand copies for a pretty cheap price back then. That's conjecture we'll probably never know for certain and an interview with Simon certainly wouldn't help.
  17. It'll probably be from a 2, 3 or 4 track master tape where one of the tracks is vocal only so you just run the tape with the vocal track completely down. I'm sure you got a good track out of the Timi Yuro Pete but unless it was completely vocal only on one side of the stereo which is incredibly unlikely (it would need to be a record company error to have it like that), you would lose the instrumentation on that side of the stereo that was at the same frequencies as her voice which is a big band in the middle of the music. I'm sure it sounded great but it would have been appreciably better if it was done from a multi track master as described.
  18. Which we don't have it in, it was only ever mono. Even if it was in stereo you'd lose a hell of a lot of the instrumentation. Thanks for the suggestion though.
  19. Thanks chaps it was a rare occasion where i wish Simon had booted it! Though I wouldn't be surprised if he had the multis away which is why we can't find them.

Get well Russ you poor old blighter. You must rate the old NHS then, bringing your manky appendix back for them to whip out!
  21. Thanks Pete, any idea what those 70s ones were or am I imagining them?
  22. Was this on one of Simon Soussan's 70s pressings? If so could anyone lend it me for Mary. Ta Ady

The main singers were Terry Evans and Jimmy Russell. Jewel and Tommy Turner and even Joe Cato came and left the groups over time. They were originally Terry & The Tyrants who cut 4 sides for Kent, two of which came out. I ramble on about them in some of the sleevenotes and will do a fuller piece when we put out the Era stuff now that we've bought the label. I'd like to see that publicity photo though.
