  1. To answer that one Kev, it's an authentic RCA acetate I found in the files of the original publishing company. It obviously had been in there since it was cut (I remember seeing the same filing cabinet in the original office about 10 years before). It's exactly the sort of place you would find that sort of acetate and there were lots of other items similar to it.
  2. It only deteriorates very marginally and with the acetate concerned and any other ones I play they are copied digitally as soon after acquisition as possible and the sound is preserved that way. I've played Ben E King a lot of times and it still sounds good.
  3. Steve out of interest do you mean the Willie Kendrick or Cavaliers as I think we're talking about the latter here?
  4. No and it's owned by RCA so I wouldn't have thought he's done a deal with them.
  5. It's not Joan, I believe it was The Cavaliers Without Someone To Tell Me which as far as I know wasn't covered by anyone else.
  6. No. Not remotely, I'm not sure where you got that from
  7. Dunno it but there's a great unissued one called Is That Love on the XL Sounds Of Memphis tapes, I'm not sure whether Dean put it on the new Kent CD.
  8. Paul you're shifting the area of discussion here into one not relevant for this posting. It was never about recording rights, it was about DJing etiquette. Yes James is concerned about his and others Djing rights, the question of label owners, songwriters and artists rights was only brought up by you and is not being discussed here, so why you're jumping to unproven conclusions I'm not sure.
  9. Not being picky (honest) but there's just as much chance of an original acetate turning up of an incredibly rare 45 as there is of the vinyl. Collectors, DJs and dealers probably get most of their finds from producers, writers and artists these days so when you get down to ultra rarety acetates come into the picture more. The big problem is knowing the authenticity of the acetate. And i wouldn't go anywhere near your legs young man.
  10. If I was Djing I wouldn't play someone else's record for them and i'd not do it to another DJ.
  11. I've got a slightly vested interest here as I was the one who sold James the original. From what I've heard it does seem odd and extreme behaviour from Rob. I disagree with Ivor about it being open season for unissued recordings, what's the difference between an original acetate and a very rare 45 where perhaps there's one or two known copies. If someone gets hold of a tape of either and makes up their own acetate it's the same type of act and if we're to have any rules on this scene i don't see why it's acceptable to play either. However if the tape was given by the artist or label owner to promote their work then I would consider that acceptable so I suppose it's down to where did the tape come from and was it obtained honestly. And I'd have thought this forum was exactly the sort of place to discuss Northern Soul DJing matters and ethics.
  12. I'm virtually certain it's not related but I see what you mean about the label
  13. Yeah Yarmouth were brilliant and I didn't have to work. I reckoned I got through 50+ pints per weekender and still had room for chips. Now which one's the oldest Northern Weekender that's still running?
  14. I heard one went for £70 at the weekend; any advance on that?
  15. We got stock in last week so it should be there any day now. And it looks and sounds gorgeous.
  16. Very different, it's a fuller orchestrated track with loads of harmonies. Excellent track, you need it!
  17. Brilliant record but awful EQ possibly done by a reggae guy as the bass is miles too high, some knob twiddling helps no end though.
  18. It's an early 70s GWP tape we found when we bought the label. Butch had an acetate made and has spun it a few times and I have on occasion. I put it on as the flip as the 70s / crossover crowd get right behind these new vinyl releases and will give it some stick before it comes out on GWP Vol 2 next year. The Milton Bennett will be on the Larry Banks CD later this month. Cut at the same session as Jaibi's 'You Got Me'
  19. Yes and I'm pretty sure it came out on vinyl first. I'm surprised and pleased Mr Roberts played it at a gig recently. I can't remember him being at the anniversary nighter though.
  20. I echo every single word of praise said about him. He was an example to everyone on how to live life; optimistic, positive and loving every minute of it that he could. I made him our first punter of the month on the 6TS web site purely because he was the ideal attendee at any event for all the qualities listed and for dancing like a whirling dervish all night. He could make the sparsest of nights look busy. My condolences go to his family and all his many good friends who have helped him through his last few tough years. If there's anything we can do to commemorate him on the 6TS site, please just ask. It's hard to believe we'll never see him again. Ady
  21. Jimmy Russell from Terry & The Tyrants/Turnarounds, just told me he'd been to Bobby's funeral. I met him in the 80s and he was a great personality, a real hustler but very friendly and fun with it. He had the Soultown label and several other productions Younghearts / Tempos being his most famous. He also recorded a rare vocal group record under his own name on Kent.
  22. I got a puny 6 but i did know Ain't No Mtn was Ashford Simpson not HDH! How the hell did he get on the show?
  23. We used an underdub with less instrumentation. Normally we wouldn't but it just sounded so good without it. I played it a few times.
  24. You'll be getting two and a half of the songs that Steve and Chalky mentioned so I'm sure you won't be disappointed. If anyone can help getting a few of the groovy flyers and posters about it would be appreciated. Addresses to ady.croasdell@btinternet.com Cheers Ady
