I like Mari but this is like most of her stuff good 60s girly rather than soul. She was a breath of fresh air in the early 80s when it was all synths now she's trying to reclaim her previously unopposed territory; good luck to her.
I had all the UK Tamla once but had to flog 'em to go to the states. At the moment I'm digging the J&S, Zell's, Sprout labels for work and now pleasure.
Great programme, with the exception of a certain "expert". The Ted stuff was excellent and good mod footage but not quite so good as the Teds and even skins. They played a bit of Booker T Averhart 'Get Your Shoes Off' off a Kent CD too.
I get a lot of people who come down to the 100 Club and say "It's my first time for X years, i can't believe how good it is and how stupid it was of me for not coming sooner" or words to that effect. Then some will start coming back regularly and others you won't see for another X years.
The point is though that it's what you say when you go to the theatre or see a good film. You can only fit so many nights out into your time and nighters aren't that convenient for family folk in particular. So get down when you can and enjoy it, if you're not enjoying it, give it a rest for a while: the nighters won't go away!
Thanks chaps, I know it was small when I started, probably in the hundreds, but I thought there would have been more in the mid 70s at the height of Wigan, however your answers have done the job in rough etimates. Thanks
I've got a feeling this has been discussed before and a rough estimate of how many people were fans of Northern Soul to any degree at its popularity peak. What was the consensus or whadya think it was very roughly?
Sadly none in April due to the 100 Club being booked up, but there is the Oldies Nighter at Xfire on Easter Sunday. If you send me your Email address to ady.croasdell@btinternet.com I'll put you on the mailing list.
Cheers
Ady
I won't be doing my flyers until Jan and will ascertain then whether Butch will be in the Smoke or elsewhere and will print up the correct info for y'all.
I do agree Ian (D) that having rich parents did make people envious of Ian Levine and it undoubtedly helped him find a lot more records. Here I could go into a "Luxury, You had it easy" reminiscence about my first trip but luckily for everyone I won't. But I think any Jewish or gay resentment has been largely since that time (I didn't know he was gay and never even thought about Jewish, even with the surname I didn't know he was until he pointed it out) and I've not seen much of that anyway. Perhaps if you agreed you could qualify the different prejudices so the scene doesn't end up looking like bigotry is a major part of it. It's not now and never was.
Thick or what? I wondered why I didn't get my little paper present on Saturday.
A huge thanks for all your hard work and support over the magazine's lifespan. Your championing of the 100 Club is something I'm forever grateful for. The mag gave Dave Godin his last way of saying hello and goodbye to the Northern Soul world which apart from the hundreds of other great articles you featured, gives it a guaranteed and important place in our history.
Yeah that's pretty much the rule of thumb at the 100 Club with a couple of occasional exceptions. On Saturday all the DJs were there virtually from start to finish and when Mick Smith's on he is too and that's something that I, as an ever aging geezer, can't even manage when i do the odd guest spot. If I get there late I pick out a pile of records I'm planning on playing and I make a point of asking the previous DJ or one of the knowledgeable punters who would know, whether they've been on before.
Luckily at the 100 most DJs have their own plays so the chances of repeats are minimal.
Kev Roberts wouldn't have known the 100 Club was clashing with his do until today, so he probably assumed Butch would be doing his. The 21st was the only date I could get in Feb. I've not even thought about the DJ line ups yet but Butch has an open invitation to DJ at any of them that he wants to. Unless its all female or international etc. No wise cracks please.
He'll make up his own mind in due course.
