  1. I don't think we should barter the man's ethnicity!
  2. I'm not so sure, one of the geezers looks black with a straight hairdo like they did back then. It's the Capitol LP with the great Chicago tracks on that I'm thinking of.
  3. Pete I've got a feeling Ron Holden was black but I'm famous for being colour blind for singers. I think the Magnificent Men had two black members and one of them does some of the great vocals off the albums.
  4. I used that style ad as the front cover for the Kent "Northern Monsters" CD, i used to love looking at them as a teen.
  5. I'm pretty sure Adam bought it off Jonathan, cos I had my first unsettling encounter with Tim Brown selling it to him for Adam.
  6. Yeah, i bought 3 copies of the first ever boot off jeff king in Leicester on Old Soul and sold two at the Lantern nighter in Harboro for a 5 shilling profit. Neither I nor anybody really knew what a boot was but we had a good idea they weren't 100% kosher (as he also sold ten black bombers for a quid, it wouldn't have been a great surprise to find out they were dodgy!). They could have been proper US re-releases for all we knew. There were a few that were but we didn't know or care about the difference.
  7. I seem to remember originals being straight down to the price of the boots as soon as they were done. Except for UK pressings which were looked on as the ultimate and developed a much stronger collecting ethos before US. Most people though just wanted the music and a boot was fine. We didn't really understand the moral implications of booting then. Or we just didn't care.
  8. Chris Harrop and I got a Jimmy Page on Fontana out of there! Along with a UK 'Per-So-Nally' and lots of others.
  9. I know what you mean Theresa, I'm the same with the dishwasher; still like to do a good bowl of pots by hand.
  10. Wow that's some discog, but it doesn't have the Money or Utopia 45s does it? I can't see that his stuff would be bootlegged but i couldn't really tell you. I'll look at our Kent/Modern database and see if there are any other listings. Thanks for the Ugly thing I'll A/B it next week at work.
  11. Anyone got a copy or any other Utopias except Sonny Herman and Don Trotter?
  12. Thanks Pat, that's saved me a lot of work and you've explained it very clearly. Now we just need to find a copy of 'You Could Be Ugly Too' on Utopia (I can't even remember who it's by, I think it's the Uglys) and A/B that. Could you post up the LP version of that please and I'll compare it with the 45 master. Cheers Ady
  13. 6TS and The New Untouchables have a major new Crossfire date for your diary. Easter Sunday, April 12th, 10pm-6am will see the first all Northern Soul Oldies all nighter in London since the famous Rocket events back in 2002. It will be held at the Venue at the International Student House (ISH) on Great Portland Street, London W1 opposite Great Portland Street tube station. Admission will be £15 on the door. There will be a live appearance at midnight from the great all US girl group The Flirtations (previously known as the Gypsies), featuring their own backing musicians. They will perform ‘Nothing But A Heartache’, ‘Stronger Than Her Love’, ‘It’s A Woman’s World’, ‘Need Your Loving’, ‘Jerk It’ and more stunning sounds. The hugely impressive DJ line up boasts the internationally renowned Keb Darge, who first made his name as one of the best Northern Soul dancers, then transformed the scene with his “Newies” DJing at Stafford and the 100 Club in the 80s. Keb now hosts weekly Northern, Deep Funk and rocking nights at Soho’s Madame Jo Jos club in Soho and has revived his interest in Northern Soul by DJing classic oldies to a new eager young London crowd. 100 club stalwart Mick Smith, who has been DJing Northern since the 60s, makes a rare Crossfire appearance. Mick is undoubtedly the best qualified oldies DJ in the south, if not the world. Fellow 6TS DJ Roger Stewart, who has been wheeling and dealing in records since the birth of Northern Soul, is yet another top oldies DJ who has lived with the scene for nearly 40 years and packs the floor at Bisley and many other southern nightspots, as well as gracing the 100 Club anniversaries with his presence. Our true northerner import for the night is the larger than life Ginger, who plays more major Northern dates per year than any other DJ. Another veteran of the scene, he DJed at the original Wigan casino, Cleethorpes Pier and Winter gardens, St Ives, Blackburn King George’s Hall, Brighouse and in recent years has swept across Europe like the Bubonic Plague. Larger than life, twice as gobby and with a box to swoon for; don’t miss out on this rare southern sighting. Ady Croasdell aka Harboro Horace has run the 6TS Northern Soul all night dances, mainly at the 100 Club, for thirty years and has also run the premier Northern Soul Weekender at Cleethorpes for 16 years. He has been the head honcho at the world’s # 1 reissue label, Kent records for 27 years and went to his first pre-Northern “old soul” dance in the summer of 1969. Old School doesn’t begin to cover it. Our special guest for the night is none other than Ian Levine, the man responsible for more Northern Soul discoveries than anyone. Ian rose to fame at the legendary Blackpool Mecca soul nights and was arguably the top DJ on the scene throughout its mid 70s heyday. He played at all the big Northern events of the time including the opening night of the Casino. Now a resident in London he mainly pursues a music business career producing records very successfully with a staggering 43 UK hits to his name. Some of these have been made for the Northern Soul scene and tracks like The Exciter’s ‘Reaching For The Best’, Frances Nero’s ‘Footsteps’, Sidney Barnes ‘Standing On Solid Ground’ and Chuck Jackson’s ‘All Over The World’ are universally recognised as Northern Soul classics. Ian was the main DJ at the Rocket all nighters on Holloway Road and has agreed to come out of self imposed retirement just for this major event. With such a heavyweight DJing line up and the live appearance of one of the best Northern Soul acts ever, this promises to be the soul gig of the year. Ady Croasdell www.6ts.info

  15. Darryl, send me your address to ady.croasdell@btinternet.com and I'll get you the Spring CDs with the Street People and the GWP CD with Debbie Taylor and the Persians. And of course the Wand one with NIACI on. Ady
  16. I'm in touch with both of the guys thanks Ben, I'll ring them up to clear the story up before I do the notes. Thanks everyone for your help.
  17. You never know where you're gonna end up when you ask a question on here. That's fascinating info from you and Bob. I believe you ended up with Matt's Money 45, did you make a dub of Part 2 at all or could you? As for You Could Be Ugly Too, it's also on a Utopia 45 (listed at least), now is that the same as the LP version? We've got a master tape on that one. I concur that Ben and Arthur are both wonderful guys Arthur told me a lot of fascinating stories.
  18. Thanks John, we can't blow it now surely?
  19. Do you mean Searling followed Ian's lead?
  20. I always thought it was Clarkie but i might be wrong, I used to get vair vair drunk in those days. It wouldn't have been yours Ken that Mick threw in the bin. It was one he'd picked up for 5 or 10p from a junk shop as a gamble and when he heard the first couple of bars decided it was pop crap. The bin was my wicker basket and I have a photo of a drunken girl asleep with her head in it somewhere; this was after the record had been taken out and in fact a totally separate incident.
  21. No he was one of the sweetest guys on the planet. he knew them all though and told me a funny story about when he was out with Nate McCalla of Calla records (he was a black gangster very tight with Maurice Levy), but i can't remember what it was! Hy Weiss of Old Town was meant to be mobbed up but he reckoned it was a case of mistaken identity which he never corrected as he always had his invoices settled on time because of it.
  22. That's what I'm checking out. I'll A/B it on Friday and let y'all know. Presumably t'other side is a different song? Thanks very much Ady
