Thanks any idea what the wording is on the labels?

Good news folks, it'll have its first 100% kosher release at the end of April. Has anyone got the Soul Series pressing, I'd like to know what it says on the label and what was on the flip. A scan would be good but if not the label name and any credits. ta Ady

Good post Ian and a lot of sad truth there, but just to clarify for budding reissue label entrepreneurs out there; BMI or ASCAP won't tell you who owns a music copyright, just a song and the two are only occasionally connected. Ditto MCPS and info on all sites is far from gospel (not neccessarily in the musical sense).

If they hadn't put anything by to cover it from the money they made from sales at the time, or didn't want to dig into past profits, yes.

Yes publishing companies can get back royalties from several years ago and our publishing arm was frequently claiming these as we signed up new publishing firms, just like we're doing with Ray Dahrouge now. Presumably he won't get that money now they're bankrupt, which could be a reason for somebody going bankrupt.

I don't think there are any personal comments, just business comments. Like I now have to tell fellow site member Ray Dahrouge and his writing partner Billy Terrell, along with many others that they won't be getting any royalties from some of the songs they wrote, which were later compiled on to Goldmine CDs and sold to soul collectors for profit, because the company has gone broke.

Probably at least 50, anything licensed from Toller was extremely dubious to say the least. see my earlier remark about master tape.

Tim Brown did once tell me that he preferred dubbing from disc and didn't even bother with tape if he had the choice. It was actually not a bad idea as if you've got masters and don't spend any time or money working on them, they can often sound worse than a dub which after all was worked on at the time. I think that's clear with a lot of the tape sources that they used. With the Scepter Wand Musicor stuff they used a lot of our research and tape work without so much as a nod of acknowledgment. When Neil Rushton or Russ Winstanley used any of our discoveries they would always give credit where it was due.

Yes probably, it's not a great term to use, I'm gonna avoid it in future. Different cities were different though, I think downtown in LA was the rougher area.

I use Uptown, to describe slick, smooth, well produced soul like the Impressions, Maxine Brown, Bettye Swann, Tony Clarke etc. i think it's probably not a very good term, a bit vague, but if you see it in the Ace catalogue it's probably Chicago or NYC soul though Motown would probably be Uptown too. Early Stax wouldn't be.

Oh yeah, they did have a US series.

It's just a great unreleased dancer that we never put out before; partly because I was hoping we might find a version with strings or extra instruments, but it does have a great brass section and may have been the finished version after all. It's defo Wand but we don't know who wrote or produced it.

That wasn't the 6TS night though. I agree he's a good geezer with taste and is hopefully gonna help me a bit with the Kent Harris Story CD.
