On the forthcoming Kent O C Tolbert CD we're using a previously unheard Dave Hamilton mix of both sides of the Rolyak/t 45 that sounds superb, the horns are more prominent and it is brilliant quality from the master tape.
The 1981 in the Soul labels threw me. O C's first work with Jack Taylor was the Rolyak 45 in 1971, he cut these substantially later sounding recordings in the mid 70s prob about 1974. All his recordings up to and including 1973 were with Dave Hamilton who he was contracted too and very close to. This was his first record after he left Dave. I asked his missus.
I doubt it very much Dave O C was with Dave then apart from the Rolyat 45 they did together, I think it's from the later early 80s period when he got back with Jack Taylor after Jack had mysteriously disappeared for nearly a decade.
No it usually is but not 100 % strict, it could have been on acetate or a Kent promo only or sneaked out on a re-released LP like Charlie Rich (legally) or Spencer Wiggins (illegally). In the case of Jesse Davis I think it's just the instrumental side though the vocal could be a bit longer.

Thanks Dave and Boba, great stuff. Watching musicians putting stuff together is fascinating, I love the rehearsals for Cleethorpes.
So did Joey do a later recording of the first song, originally by Dee Edwards? Presumably tough to find if Steve ain't snaffled one.
Great stuff Dave, what's the story; line-up, history etc.
Does the Detroit Historical Soul Society or whatever it's called promote all Detroit music or mainly their own things?
Cheers

Thanks Richard, I'm off to bed now but will check the flip out tomorrow. It sounds like the same group I'm investigating. What an early side for 1970 or thereabouts. Any chance of a scan too please?

Gerri Hall on Sue, given a release number but probably didn't get to production.
Walter Wilson on Wand didn't exist until i found one in Billy Jackson's gaff!
He's changed his tune in recent decades, he has to kiss a lot more Brit ass these days since the doo wops dried up. I actually preferred him when he was grumpy and considered all soul fans tossers. Despite that we got on well until one day he accused me of nicking records after I'd been going there for ten years and thought we had a decent relationship. He had a hissy fit and I was very close to cracking him one, I had Jimmy Andrews 'Big City Playboy' in my pile for $3 though so decided against it. I didn't bother going back though.

Label designs and images are usually only owned by the label owner but I think it's only used as a weapon against people who are directly profiting from that image. The most obvious one is T shirt sellers using a label logo they have no rights to eg Stax, Motown, Mirwood etc. To do it legit the T shirt manufacturer would have to get permission and probably pay a fee or royalty

Yes it's good but just a bit too slow in parts to get the dancefloor going. A very rockish voice too.
Very interesting, i didn't know about it.
