  1. Just like to say big thanks for inviting me and Lenny down for last nights show, we really did have a blast and made to feel very welcome by Nick and Tabs , sorry you couldnt make it Melly hope Mum is feeeling better. Had to make my own tea and supply Nick with beer allnight, but He did remember pasties etc. Hope you can grab a lift for Soul in Bowl on Saturday Mel, if it helps you and driver can have a couple of freebies to get in
  2. As you know Steve it was a Rushden tradition that i carried on at the Pembo was played as the last record at the 'Rock Foundation' Rushden Northants . Promoters John Warren and Andy Luck were Mecca Fans and played it as a tribute .I played it as a tribute to them. Funnily enough had it on in the car the other day my son said it sounded like 'supermarket' music
  3. Yep sad loss, Call me tomorrow in my fave top ten , on Banbury internet radio tomorrow night , so shall give it a spin out of respect
  4. Yes the Northants Gypsy is on the way, I will take a look at those roof slates as well , you could have some lead flashing missing Mel, well you will have when im finished anyway...tea and cakes at the ready please!!! and a sugar lump for the horse
  5. Eh you lost me there, werent you doing your "plastic sandals funk thing circa 1977" Tez Fleet allnighter fletton had good oldies room as well heard Mr. Floods ..Real compared to what in there for first time...love it
  6. No defo one at St. Ives 76/77and the Melton Mowbray Alldayer I attended back then
  7. Well you wanna play some proper Norman Sole not that Motown rubbish
  8. Believe me Winnie theres a lot more poor taste pop soul where that came from
  9. If i was gonna stretch the truth would try and make myself younger Len , maybe cool Stafford Goer or something, no never went unfortunately. I have to admit i got into the scene at arguably one of its worst periods spencer soul bags white socks and Muriel Day were the order of the day for me
  10. Quite easy really check out my profile born 1963 cousin sneeked me into St Ives when i was 13 so late 76/77, remember a lot of lads were wearing those patchwork jean baggies then.
  11. Yes and i forgive you for nicking this of me a soul in the bowl "main room classic"
  12. Interesting topic Pete and if we are all honest suppose we are all a bit guilty of what your describing. I grew up in a house where my older sister was a original Mod girl so growing up remember hearing Kinks Motown etc., my older brother was a Skinhead/ Suede Head, so Reggae/ Ska and my younger sister was into Rock My Cousin introduced me to Northern Soul and i was hooked immediately by the music. I can remember defending it to death at a time when most people including my siblings ridiculed the music, clothes and scene as naff circa 1976/77 think people forget that , as now outsiders view Northern Soul as retro cool. So like you I was guilty of being a N.Soul snob. Think most would agree those times 76/77 where strange , Golden era over etc.pop influenced "newies" stuff coming through, which even as a impressionable teenager i found a bit naff, although some good then modern soul stuff emerging . I found myself more often than not in oldies rooms where i was listening to what i now know was 60s club classics, met Glen Bellamy who educated me in this stuff. Coming full circle my eldest son 23 is heavily into rare motown and soul which has filtered down, In the end I suppose all the dots have been joined and now i listen to and have a healthy respect for all the genres not sure about the rock thing though
  13. Purely coincidentley just got this through the post this morning but on uk chess 8102. reason being dug my us original cadet styrene copy out the other day.... hadnt played it for ages..reminded me that i was never happy with the sound quality ...uk copy good quality vinyl sounds perfect gives a whole new pleasure to playing it. This to me is what owning records is about getting the best possible recording you can and a big reason that i prefer owning originals......But going by the rules some suggest the uk copy could be classed as a re issue? Anyway for those who might visit our venue where i could play it please dont walk out in disgust if you here it thinkling its a re issue.. cos i shall be playing the us cadet copy and saving the chess one for the ultimate sound experience at home
  14. Well Len to you and all the other purists if thats the case then you should be seeking out the master tapes and playing them out not sure how you would plug them into the amp etc though sorry mate see ya later
  15. Im not having a DIG at anyone, just asking questions thats what forums are for, I Have a few thousand original soul records myself and know what motivates me to own them was just enquiring what others thought. Why would i know anything about record publishing companies I just buy records someone else raised the point that artists were not getting paid or being paid for uk re issues, I mereley commented on it,
  16. Again wasnt aimed at you. I just find it interesting that a point was made concerning artists getting paid/ not getting paid and buy people extolling the virtues of buying ovo may be linked as a mark of respect . When in fact it transpires that they may have recieved royalties from uk reissues in the 70s ....suppose its just a bit ironic....you play ovo for the reasons you stated ...fair play
  17. Now you know thats not true terry...its more than 2 miles away from me
  18. Whoa there boy, wasnt aimed personally at you was an answer to the general point being made ....spend what you like on what you like . I posed the question to some one else. What is your motivation for buying ovo? thats all and really as yet havent had an answer...incidentley i buy ovo in most cases because the sound quality is superior and i like listening to it not cos i want to dj with it. I do proffessional djing at non Northern Soul events so certainly not desperate to dj at a northern soul night ...plenty of people around to take care of that Best Jem
  19. ha ha but really these reissues are in lots of cases just later represses very often from the same pressing plate just re labled.... so they are authentic....sorry but its reality not terminology im talking about
  20. ok then so lets get this right ...what is being advocated is the artist that sang the tune is getting nothing, just one off payment then record companies cashing in ? and this bothers some people today , well here is a suggestion stop spending thousands of pounds on ovo. buy a reissue(ligit off course) cos you really like the record ??... so your "right on" and got some credentials left, then send the change from your grand to the artist or the family if they are no longer with us.
  21. Im sure if they were proper business people they were in it to make a profit (nothing wrong in that) but if it was done legitimatley and above board then surely said artists would have got something for it down the line, unless we are saying that pye and the like were total charlatans, never been in the record industry myself so wouldnt know , but at least this way they stood a chance with a illegal boot leg zero chance, plus any royalties they may of recieved from the us release im sure would have long gone if we are to believe the stories
  22. Interesting point Kegsy...so really in respect to those often unsung artists we should have all opted for ligit uk re issues back then least they may have got some of their just deserts then....well i got loads of disco demand stuff i bought new so i done my bit
  23. Hi Pete, just a question not a pop, you seem pretty dogmatic in your approach (100% original vinyl) as the F.W. situation suggests. You adverise A.T.B. night , so if i came along and requested say Frankie Beverley - Thats what i wanted or Majestics - I love her so much would i expect to hear it on Sassy/ Gamble or Linda/ WB in both cases one came before the other just wondered what your policy would be on them
  24. In direct relation to original question and not wishing to drag in the inevitable OVO Northern Soul record debate. The answer has to be any legitimate release sanctioned by the publishing company. They are the people that hold the legal rights so while it may have been released earlier a re release wether US or UK is still valid in my opinion. I do have a question for people that advocate O V O ..what is your motivation for doing so ? is it a respect thing for the artist ensuring they get royalties assuming they are still alive?, a deep respect for record label owners? or merely just a personal preference? and should you rename your policy as F.R.V.O (first release vinyl only) just to avoid confusion All this can be taken to extremes for example I collect Britiish release Soul 45s was Djing a while back and someone had requested Frankie Valli The Night.. planned on playing it as my first record however dj i was taking over from said "no problem got it covered gonna end with it" fine.. however noticed His was UK mowest 3024 and mine was first release 3002...I could have punched His effing lights out ....not really couldnt give monkeys
