the song "down home girl"
I emailed Artie Butler (co-author of the song along with Jerry Lieber). Here is his response. Does anyone know if the Rolling Stones' release was earlier than the Al Robinson? Hi Leo, Thanks for writing to me. "Down Home Girl" was written by Jerry Leiber & myself in 1964. If my memory serves me correct the Rolling Stones recording was the first one in one of their early albums. (I may be wrong about that) The Coasters did have a slightly different lyric. Both are of course by Jerry Leiber. As far as how the song came about, I can tell you that I remember saying to Jerry I want to play you a tune. I played him the melody and he absolutely loved it. He wrote the lyric and it's as simple as that. Hope this gives you some info. Thanks for writing to me. Warmest regards, Artie Butler

What is this automobile record player??
Muhammed Ali passed away this week. I have been following it, as I spent 15+ years as an amateur boxer. I saw these pictures of him playing 45s in his car! I've never seen such a contraption! Does anyone know about these?

Teako records discography?
The record says background vocals by the Fabuletts - is this the same group that recorded on Access ("muddy waters"), Sound Stage 7 ("screaming and shouting") and monument ("the bigger they are") - assuming these are all the same group (even though the styles of these three recordings are very different). Also, I heard the Mar-Vells on Butane ("go on and have yourself a ball") were an earlier version of the Fabuletts.

Teako records discography?
Does anyone have a discography for Teako? I have the Mystics 45 ("I really love you") and Bettye Scott & Del-Vetts ("good feeling"), and I've seen a Chymes 45 on it. Also, I grabbed this paragraph off of Sir Shambling's Deep Soul Heaven page for the artist Kenny Wells... FURTHER UPDATE ~ Bob Abrahamian has written to say that the New York Kenny Wells and the Chicago Kenny Wells are not the same person. He kindly sent me the email address of the Windy City artist and Kenny himself has confirmed this. So this part of the page refers to the career of the Chicago Kenny Wells. Bob says that Kenny Wells had his own jazz combo, his band is the band playing on a lot of Kellmac 45s, you can see his name credits on the CODs, Combinations, etc. Kenny Wells was one of the owners of the Lock group of labels (e.g. Dream, Broach, Erica, etc.). Lock stood for: Lucky Cordell, Ed O'Kelley (who independently owned Teako), Clarence Johnson and Kenny Wells. He did run the Black Hole label on which there are actually 3 Gadgets 45s. I think he told me he wasn't a member of the Gadgets and just produced them. Kenny himself writes to say that he produced Denise Chansdler's "Love Is Tears" on Lock, Diane Cunningham's "Some Day Baby" on Broach, the Spoilers "Spoilers Rap" on Broach. Kenny also confirmed that he owned Black Hole records. He is still making music and is a DJ on WSSD.

New Eli "Paperboy" Reed Track, "Hold Out" just released, album in June
"hold out" seems to be a version of old gospel tune that goes "I promised the Lord that I would hold on - 'til he meet me in Galilee!". i have a great version by Sensational Twilight of Brooklyn Gospel Singers (or something like that). awesome interpretation of it!

I have this song by the Fabulous Peps, but I saw an episode of the TV show "The Wire" and it featured another version of the song (slower). Anyone know who it might be? Thanks!- stovall sisters - hang on in there

i have the WD of this, and the release number is #1028. it looks like almost all of the ones on popsike are the same (WD, 1028) https://www.popsike.com/php/quicksearch.php?searchtext=stovall+hang&x=0&y=0 this person on eBay is selling 3 mint copies - and he says they are re-issues and they are orange stock copies with the release number R7 74167(?). it just seems odd that a single that was so unsuccessful that there seem to be few original stock copies would be re-issued by Reprise? and it isn't rare enough to boot (plus, no bootlegger would make original looking sleeves). https://www.ebay.com/itm/191756105075?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT any thoughts? is this a modern re-issue? it doesn't seem rare enough for that either...- my new favorite T-shirt
