this is a nice Relf composition. sounds pretty "blue eyed" (and actually gets spun on the garage scene i think).

i spin this all the the time. such a great big-city production with HUGE vocals by Ms. Reese

my favorite Frisco release. i know this doesn't help answer any of your questions (but it can't hurt!)... Wanda Rouzan - long time no see

thanks for the info. I wonder if he worked here (Aluminum Industries Inc. on Beekman Avenue - pic is from the big flood of 1937). Maybe not, but it is a cool image...

FYSA, this is where I heard about motorbike accident... "I could find very little info on Junior McCants other than that he was from Cincinnati and he usually sang in a falsetto. This was his follow-up single to another great King release #6076; "The Boy Needs a Girl / Help My Love” from 1967 which failed to chart but did receive regional air play. On the liner notes to a Kent CD collection called King Northern Soul, it states that McCants died of a brain tumor at the age of 24. But I’ve also read that Junior McCants died in a motorcycle accident when he and King staff songwriter/producer/arranger Charles Spurling went out riding. According to the back story "Try Me for Your New Love" was pulled, in respect for McCants family’s wishes. Only a couple of white label promos saw the light of day, obviously at least one survived" https://www.amoeba.com/blog/2009/02/the-thing-of-a-thing-of-a-thing-/junior-mccants.html

Does anyone know the story behind McCants death (and the related story around the aborted release of the "try me for your new love" 45)? I found this article from a cincinnati newspaper, but it is very hazy on his death. They talk about cancer, but I had also heard something about a motorcycle accident? https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/history/2014/10/18/mystery-soul-singer-junior-mccants/17532395/

love all of her singles. even like her version of "come see about me" better than Motown version. think her voice sounds more vulnerable and emotive.

Holy cow. Do the same thing. I'll play "pain" by Mitty Collier, and then pick up "i know you don't want me" by the Endeavors - but then have to tell me wife "it'll take me three records to get there!"
-
Since the pound is in rough shape, been buying up some great stuff! Joyce Jones - help me make up my mind Little Hank - try to understand (love the factory sleeve!) Sissie Houston - bring him back

My wife prods me to play my soul 45s at home (so we can dance in our socks). Bless her heart, she is not a massive soul fan (more electronica), but she said if i'm going to spend all of our extra money on rare soul records, she better get some enjoyment from them! Attached: scene of the crime (those long black boxes are all 45s - the ones with silver edges next to the turntable are for DJ-ing)...and our dog (who insists on getting picked up and held if anyone is dancing).

I emailed Artie Butler (co-author of the song along with Jerry Lieber). Here is his response. Does anyone know if the Rolling Stones' release was earlier than the Al Robinson? Hi Leo, Thanks for writing to me. "Down Home Girl" was written by Jerry Leiber & myself in 1964. If my memory serves me correct the Rolling Stones recording was the first one in one of their early albums. (I may be wrong about that) The Coasters did have a slightly different lyric. Both are of course by Jerry Leiber. As far as how the song came about, I can tell you that I remember saying to Jerry I want to play you a tune. I played him the melody and he absolutely loved it. He wrote the lyric and it's as simple as that. Hope this gives you some info. Thanks for writing to me. Warmest regards, Artie Butler

Muhammed Ali passed away this week. I have been following it, as I spent 15+ years as an amateur boxer. I saw these pictures of him playing 45s in his car! I've never seen such a contraption! Does anyone know about these?

IRMA AND THE FASCINATORS-LOST LOVE- SCEPTER
Ljblanken replied to SLAMMINSOUL's topic in Look At Your Box
make sure you don't forget to flip it! "just a feeling" should get more spins out... -
The record says background vocals by the Fabuletts - is this the same group that recorded on Access ("muddy waters"), Sound Stage 7 ("screaming and shouting") and monument ("the bigger they are") - assuming these are all the same group (even though the styles of these three recordings are very different). Also, I heard the Mar-Vells on Butane ("go on and have yourself a ball") were an earlier version of the Fabuletts.

Thanks for sharing the Ray Pettis and Lawanda Bell tracks! Both great!

Does anyone have a discography for Teako? I have the Mystics 45 ("I really love you") and Bettye Scott & Del-Vetts ("good feeling"), and I've seen a Chymes 45 on it. Also, I grabbed this paragraph off of Sir Shambling's Deep Soul Heaven page for the artist Kenny Wells... FURTHER UPDATE ~ Bob Abrahamian has written to say that the New York Kenny Wells and the Chicago Kenny Wells are not the same person. He kindly sent me the email address of the Windy City artist and Kenny himself has confirmed this. So this part of the page refers to the career of the Chicago Kenny Wells. Bob says that Kenny Wells had his own jazz combo, his band is the band playing on a lot of Kellmac 45s, you can see his name credits on the CODs, Combinations, etc. Kenny Wells was one of the owners of the Lock group of labels (e.g. Dream, Broach, Erica, etc.). Lock stood for: Lucky Cordell, Ed O'Kelley (who independently owned Teako), Clarence Johnson and Kenny Wells. He did run the Black Hole label on which there are actually 3 Gadgets 45s. I think he told me he wasn't a member of the Gadgets and just produced them. Kenny himself writes to say that he produced Denise Chansdler's "Love Is Tears" on Lock, Diane Cunningham's "Some Day Baby" on Broach, the Spoilers "Spoilers Rap" on Broach. Kenny also confirmed that he owned Black Hole records. He is still making music and is a DJ on WSSD.
