  1. How did she “upset” radio DJs? Just curious...
  2. This great song "last bus from Tupelo" by Frankie Newsome is a story of a poor young man from the rural south who goes to the urban north to seek his fortune. Instead, he gets taken advantage of, used/abused there. Do folks know of any other songs from this lyrical genre? (poor rural blacks that get taken advantage of in cities like Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, etc). Thanks!
  3. one of the very best. RIP.
  4. Mine sounds like the bottom one, but have to dig it out to check the deadwax...
  5. so... Thin production? Thick one? (I have this one)
  6. ...and this is so dark ...
  7. Flip it and it gets a LOT deeper ... ready made for a lonely evening at home with a nice bottle of scotch...
  8. this is one of my fave gospel LPs... their early work...
  9. Thank you but just got sorted!
  10. I was born in 1971, so was not really aware of stuff at the time (except my old sister had a disco compilation called "Hot Nights, City Lights" with "brick house", "I will survive" etc on it that I rocked out to when I was like 6 years old!) ...based on my records collection, however I wish you could split the difference. it seems like 1968-1972 was the epitome of soulful (leaving behind pop/twee girlie and Motown and was still pre-disco and indulgent funk/jazz/studio-jam). stuff like Leroy Horne's "don't come back" (Pompeii 1968) or Marvin L Sims "get off my back" (Revue 1969) seem to have the perfect blend of tight, focused 1960s song smithing, street-wise grittiness/attitude, and appropriate level of raw-ness in production. those are just two random examples that happen to be sitting on my decks right now, but you get the picture. I know that answer is cheating! sorry!
  11. I am looking for 3 tix to the event. We are traveling from the US and I just recently convinced my wife to change our plans to be in London on the 30th, but now the event is sold out. Thanks! - Leo
  12. Soooo.... just booked flights to get into London afternoon of SEPT 30. I know everyone is going to the 100 Club thing that night, but it is sold out and I can't find any other events in London for that night on the events page. Does anyone know of any smaller (pub/bar/lounge) low-key spot that might be spinning good music (soul, reggae, R&B, etc)? if not, any recommendation for anything else to do around London that evening? Or...any off chance someone is selling 3 tix to 100 Club? :-)
  13. Will be on vacation in Rome from 20-24 SEPT. Didn't see anything on the calendar, but thought people may have good suggestions for music (soul, R&B, funk, reggae) or record stores. Also will be in Florence 24-29 SEPT, but don't imagine there is much going on there (or maybe I'm wrong?). Thanks!
  14. also, just to add to the questions... what do folks know about Shirley J Scott?
  15. would love to know. if you check my profile page, 'goose pimples' is my absolute fave soul record ever. i love TMKMHM as well, but the voice on shirley j scott is just angelic.
  16. great act. spin this sometimes...
  17. I've got one track for you that will answer all the mail. I love the tittyshaker saxophone. I used to spin this at rockabilly events in the early 90s and people LOVED it... Googie Rene - Bigfoot
  18. I was just in North Carolina for work last week and stopped in to the bricks-and-mortar store in Durham. Bought some great gospel. The people working there are TOP NOTCH people. Very cool and knowledgeable. I bought like $250 of stuff and they offered to ship it home to Cali for me for free (so wouldn't have to lug it around) and even gave me a free t-shirt! also saw one of them (Jack) spin that Friday night at a bar - really cool set and a really good dude.
  19. anyone know anything? have to go there for work this week.
  20. this event looks awesome. wish I could have been there!
  21. My wife and I were making dinner and I turned to her and said "we should play some music while we cook". She just stared at me, and then I realized there WAS music playing - but it was some vapid, jangly rock music - and my brain completely blocked it out! I realize my brain totally tunes out any music other than soul/R&B/gospel/etc. I guess you do something long enough and you rewire your head!
