  1. I am relatively new to soul and have only used the internet (like this forum and soulfulkindamusic.net, etc) to investigate stuff. i would like to do a bit more methodical research - on both the history of the music and record collecting. can folks recommend the best books out there? also books that are in print! every time someone recommends a book - i can't find a copy anymore! (which is also the case with most records people recommend!) ok, thanks!
  2. (even louder) ha ha ha! my car? i drive up in my shiny 2008 Toyota Corolla and jump out with my blond hair and blue eyes.... it takes a bit of time (and some legit tunes) until i am sure i am not gonna get plugged by a vato. also, i'll see if i have some useful stuff as mp3 to post!
  3. ha ha. i live in northern california (near Salinas - #1 gun crime per capita city in the uSA) and have been collecting/dj-ing soul for about 12 years. not much of a northern scene to speak of, but you want some brown pride locos to show up? spin some ballads and wear a kevlar vest!!
  4. cool! thanks for puttin up the pic.
  5. cool. thanks for the response!
  6. thanks for your response! is this the guy who does the "sittin in the park" from chicago? i've heard your podcasts and they are amazing.
  7. i don't think i fully understand the term "cover up". i had heard that jamaican DJs would sometimes scratch off the name of records to protect their finds. did this also happen in britain? and did the DJ then give it a fake name? that is crazy! or do you simply mean it was covered by Christine Cooper (who i have never heard of). sorry for my ignorance!
  8. really? i only have the Young Folk single and was looking at the Miss Madeline on ebay....hhhmmm. maybe i should pick it up!
  9. just a question, is this version of 'lonely girl' the same recording as the young folk version on the same label? does anyone know the story behind this? thanks! https://cgi.ebay.com/...id=p3286.c0.m14
  10. carol fran - i'm gonna try (port) johnny sayles - the concentration (chi town) ohio players - trespassin (compass) pearls - happy over you (wb) tran-sisters - could have knocked me over (imperial)
  11. awesome. thanks for all of your input - learn a ton every time i use this forum!!
  12. Hi, i am young(ish) and american so i rarely get british re-issues of american soul. but recently i have begun to notice that when i do get them and, even though they LOOK mint/mint-minus, they sound terrible. it's not crackles, background noise, it is that the high/loud parts sound totally distorted. for example, just last week i got a batch of records from a respectable source. 4 were originals (in the vg/vg+) and two were later british issues (incredibles "nothing else to say" on the Contemporaries label (1974?) and Patti/Emblems "i'm gonna love you a long long time" on the O.O.T.P. label ("out of the past"?)). the look clean and unplayed - but they sound awful!! the originals from the 60s looked beat up and dirty but sounded much better (despite the expected background noise). what is the deal? do they just alwasy sound like this? is it my equipment? (fyi - i have a decent stanton dj turntable with a new and decent Grado needle) is there anything i can do??? or is it just the way it is?
  13. Hi. I have seen Carol Slade "i wanna know right now/i saw you" as Domino 1015, Highland 1034, and Malynn 9000. can anyone tell me about these different presses? thanks!
  14. ok. here is the scan from the ebay auction... (hope it comes up)
  15. wow. thanks for all of your feedback. i'll scan the label when it (modern single) arrives in the mail!
  16. oh yeah! i forgot there is a girl group from texas called the tonettes (recorded 'gee baby' on the "Ty-Tex" label) - they seem to be earlier and weird - like rockabilly/girl group/doo wop. i assume they are a totally different bunch. who knows!?!?
  17. ok. there are 'the tonettes' on volt ("please don't go/no tears" and "stolen angel/teardrop sea") and 'gloria scott and the tonettes' on WB ("I taught him" parts 1 and 2) and i just bought (on a whim) a Modern single by 'the Tonettes' ("tonight you belong to me"). i have never heard that one (and haven't received it in the mail yet - but the ad described it as 'girl group'). i also have a song on a comp called 'my heart can feel the pain' by the 'Tonettes'. are all these groups the same? or related? 'soulfulkindamusic' says that the volt 'tonettes' became the 'charmels' ('loving material') but they don't mention gloria scott or the Modern single. anyone know? thanks!
  18. cool. thanks for the reply!
  19. hi. i have a great jackie wilson double-sider "sweetest feeling" and "nothing but blue skies"... BUT the song title reads "nothing but heartaches" on the label. this seems odd (sort of opposite of the song's meaning). are they all like this? does anyone know why this is? just a bit puzzled. thanks in advance...
  20. it seems that a lot of people are basing judgement of best male singer on the aggregate value of the person's total output of material, but (just in terms of voice quality) i would submit howard tate or even bobby taylor as some of the greatest male voices. what do you think?
  21. hi. i just picked up a single by the renovations (angel town 101 - 'thanks to him/as we danced'). does anyone know anything about these guys? just curious because it sounds really 'white' to me - tamborine, 'hey hey hey' backing vocals, and a really garage/mod sound (almost like The Music Machine or something). it's written/produced by 'R.Relf' is that Bob Relf? ok. just curious. thanks for any feedback...
  22. holy cow! you guys (collectively) know a freakish amount about this topic. i guess i came to the right place with my question. thanks for all of your help!
  23. ok. here it is (if i can make this work!) jewels___mislabeled_song.mp3
  24. thanks! i will try and make that happen when i get home (at work now in my slave cubicle). it's probably some really well-known song to everyone else on this site. it's even vaguely familiar to me but i just can't place it.
