  1. no worries, man. your secret is safe with me! (i like "cry me a river" by justin timberlake, but i only sing it in the shower)
  2. oohhh... sorry. i have heard of a handful of them. but i really have not listened to any concurrent chart music my whole life. i just choose very obscure sub-genres and go deep! i think i have OCD blinders on most of the time. ....i have heard of Meatloaf though! Saw him in "Fight Club"!
  3. I just know the Vicar of Dibley hates it! There is a British ex-pat grocery down the coast. I will have to drive down and see if they have some. I am intrigued.....
  4. what's marmite? I heard it mentioned on an episode of "Vicar of Dibley" (i saw on netflix) and didn't know what it was!
  5. gotta be the ladies. check out the opening moans of this bessie banks track. i heard those three backing voices are doris troy, cissy houston, and dee dee warwick. not a bad crew of back-ups! Bessie Banks - sounds like my baby (Tiger) Ruby Johnson - when my love comes down (Volt)
  6. i think i sort of missed most of that era. started off listening to american hardcore all through the eighties!
  7. ha ha. i've never heard of todd rundgren - you actually tricked me into watching this vid on youtube!
  8. have you ever worn a record out through DJ-ing it or listening at home? i know we all have bought records that were previously owned by non-collector types that have been "worn out" or simply trashed (not stored properly, not handled properly, etc), but have you ever had to replace a record because you simply spun it to much? in other words, have you, as a "serious" record person, bought a M- copy of something and noticed after awhile that it sounded/looked VG? couple sub-points: a) I know people are concerned about back-cueing records (so they don't get "cue burn"). what do you feel about that? b) you ever loaned a record out to friend and gotten it back in noticably worse condition? c) have you ever bought multiple copies just to hedge against wear? (not to get different label designs, issue/demo, UK/US/Canada pressings, etc) ...or are we all just being OCD, and since we all store and handle are records reasonably well - they should (barring fire, accident, etc) last our lifetimes?
  9. It's "28 Days Later"? watch out! he may be in a "rage" and eat you!
  10. i started a thread on this particular point before, but it bears on the discussion here : the BB hole. i got a great deal from a British guy once. he listed: "Betty Harris "trouble with my lover" (Sansu) it is VG with BB hole" i paid the guy (8 GBP, i believe), and when it arrived in the mail it was stone mint! ...and then i realized he had graded it all the way down to VG because of the BB hole! bless his heart!
  11. i agree. i guess UK dealers are serious soul folks who are used to seeing rare and good (but trashed records) a bunch. i have bought some records off of big sites in the Uk marked "E" that were played to death. i am sure a lot of USA dealers are crappy, but i totally trust the big USA dealers on ebay (craigmoerer, spinstop, johntefteller, chriscarnahan, headbonedaddy, web45s, waxman, sprydiddle). just my experience...
  12. Howard Tate - Verve and Turntable stuff was amazing, superlative voice! Ruby Johnson - should have been the female Otis Redding!!
  13. super cool! thank you! (have a jeans jacket just itching for that patch!)
  14. i have seen a patch that says "soul together - right on" and it has a black hand with an american flag on it shaking hands with a white hand that has a union jack on it and the hands are stretching across the atlantic ocean. does anyone know that patch? i would love to get one (but would not pay 100 pounds for it!) or a repro? (i will check the site mentioned by Cazzino1977)...
  15. spun "you'll soon be gone" on friday night sandwiched between "oh baby" by Jill Harris and "you made me suffer" by Tyrone Davis. the kind of music that is mid-tempo but has a double helping of soulful vocals...
  16. went to the "crooked beat" record shop in washington DC and got "if i could only be sure" by nolan porter for $1.99. unfortunately the price tag is on the label, but i left it just as proof of my score!
  17. THAT is where i heard the "foot ball" version of the story! (RobbK)
  18. I just saw the notes for this week's "Sitting in the Park" show (another great one Boba) with a guest DJ Elaine Wade. One of the tunes played had this note attached: "New Yorkers–You Should Have Told Me–Tac-Ful [named after Chrysler New Yorker!]" I heard somewhere (maybe on soul source?) that this vocal group was made up of New York native football players who were playing in Los Angeles (where, I heard, this was recorded) - hence the name "New Yorkers" and the reason for the football players on the label. I know this is absolutely not important at all - but just was curious if anyone could corroborate either story (football story or Chrysler story...)
  19. thanks for the heads up. i was hoping for a 45 boot because when i DJ i only take 45s if i can help it - i am just too lazy to pack a handful of LPs! i know it sounds crazy to some people, but i really don't mind playing a carver or boot of an LP-only track (as long as it has a good quality sound).
  20. was this ever released as a single? (or booted as a single?)
  21. yes i believe they are ashford and simpson. wasn't there other Glover single "I'll find you" played on the norther scene? i know that was also a popcorn hit.
  22. so - like for any given 2-hour slot at Stafford (or other venues, for that matter) - how many records would the crowd be hearing for the first time (one? two? five?) just a rough guess.
  23. what do you mean "broken in large chunks"? like they introduced too many new records each week? i've always wondered this about all british soul venues (wigan, mecca, etc) - how many new things were put in the line up at each event? and how long would a record stay in rotation before being put aside to make room for new sounds??
  24. oh crazy! do you know of any (more) youtube videos that have altered speed records? can you suggest some common records that people speed up or slow down? i have never even thought of it... now i am going upstairs to play with my pitch controls!
  25. Really? I think that is such a weird practice. i have never altered the speed of a record when spinning. Has anyone else here (this may be a new thread topic?)?
