Jan - Rob Thomas, Feb - Dave Box, Mar - Mort, Apr - Sean Chapman, May - Soul Sourcers Jamie Rich B and John May, June - John Vincent, July - Dave Rimmer, Aug - Nige Brown, Sept - tbc, Oct - Soul Sam, Nov - tbc, Dec - Steve Mannion.... there will be scope for others on certain nites as we "sit out" now and again.... Gonna have to lay down for a bit soon as got to "prepare" for a "works bevvy" in Sheffield city centre tonite.... no doubt the usual disco stuff in all the bars along with the local dickheads kicking off after a sniff of the strong lager .... Worst part has to be a Saturday with no soul ....

Didn't think fo one minute you were having a dig mate .... Just thought I'd "try" and explain it as I see it .... Suppose it's all about how you read and interpret the term.... like you say I've noticed other local nites that have been going a while like us "adopt" the term on recent flyers.... only to be, as you rightly say, "60's and 70's oldies" only.... not knocking them as "their" nites seem to work for them.... I think that's we came up with our logo of "Vault of Soul".... to try and say summat about what we were about.... if you know what I mean. ... Andy Whitmore is a "regular" at our place with his sales boxes.... I'm sure he'd give you a good idea of what "I" mean by "accross the board".... a bit of everthing which also does have the splattering of "60's 70's oldies mixed in" to cater for "all".... I'd like to think that some of the oldies played though are "not run of the mill", "forgotten" or "not heard regularly now" as discussed in another thread.... things like Lenis Guess which you mentioned.... Just thought.... instead of the ATB, how about "an eclectic mix of all things soulful that have been encapsulated by the Northern Soul scene and played/underplayed at some time therein over the passage of time" .... Nah.... means changing the flyers from A5 to A4 ....

To me Chalky, the term "accross the board" is not an "excuse to play played out 70's Northern" as you put it .... more a "short" way of suggesting that, musically, it's "everything what the floor wants today" and not just an oldies only fest or any other genre only fest.... more a fair sprinkling of whatever the DJ feels is right within their spot .... I'm probably, in your eyes, "guilty" of using the term.... I do put a line on the flyers saying "6 soulful hours of accross the board Northern Soul".... have thought about changing it once or twice but nowt else comes to mind without "listing" everything played.... Holding the night in one room means we have to cater for all tastes, which I feel we do quite well.... we have noticed that "die hard" oldies fans have become "less blinkered" with this approach.... goes back to my days at Clifton Hall with the "one music, one room philosophy".... even after 4+ yrs we get the odd comment of "too much this, too much that" or "not enough this, not enough that" but those saying it still come back .... Until a "more acceptable" term comes up that encompasses the "whole scene" then I'm affraid I for one will use it.... rightly or wrongly .... That is, of course, unless of course yourself or anybody else has a "term" I could use ....

Personally John, I think that a "big name" is what the paying people deem to be so.... I mean what is to one man/woman a "big name" will be a "so-so name" or even a "no-name" to another man/woman.... certain people follow certain DJ's that are the "dog's danglies" and "big" to them... Admittedly there are the "well known" DJ's who are often referred to as "big name" purely because of being "well known".... does not make them any "bigger" or better than a "lesser known" or "locally known" DJ in my opinion.... to me it's what gets played that counts.... I tend to think of it more as the "well known" factor that promoter's go for when aiming to get more people through the door.... automatically billed as "big name".... hence that's why these get the vast ammounts of bookings you stated.... it's all how you look at it I suppose.... If you get my drift with this "babble" ....

Well hello John.... nice to see you on board .... On your above point.... gotta agree.... went to the odd one or two of these "other" revival nights and to me that's all they were.... a soul nite held in an "original" building.... which was the "draw" of them I suppose.... not a true "Sam's" thing though.... attempted twice to my knowledge.... firstly in 80's then mid to late 90's.... A "baby" of 28.... that's makes us, in relation, 20-30 somethings.... that's OK because my daughter thinks were all "mad" staying out all nite at our ages .... but as long as we don't have to go back to the "bags" and "star jumpers" ....

The "hook" was thrown.... but missed a bite although a nibble was to be had .... Have listened to most Pete.... some nice stuff you've acquired there .... He says packing rod, bait and basket and trudging home....

A sad, sad loss to "our" scene .... Took a phone call from John Vincent today who informed me of the news.... takes some getting you're head round.... another great loss to that "allniter in the sky".... The "epitome of sound" when it came to pleasing a dance floor.... no matter what time of night, early or late, that he entertained us.... Dancing Derek was a character within a character.... no polotics, no bad words, just sheer enthuiasm for the music he loved so dear.... and loved to share it with us.... Fond memories will remain.... priveledged to have had Derek guesting at Ponds Forge.... and more so to being "honoured" by an inclusion in his places visited within his "East Midlands Soul Scene" column.... albeit as Derek put "just hopping over the border for my next one".... the pleasure was all ours mate.... Heart felt condolences to Derek's family and close friends.... Mark, Tony, Errol and Chris (PF crew)....

Say it as you see it Brett .... P.S. Does that mean you'll take a tenner for your Stoppers .... P.P.S. Holy Running Mother Mary, you mean it didn't ....

Just read this (and other) thread re e-mails Mike.... I got "some" for a bit the other day but only from the "various topics" I'd posted replies in.... Couldn't understand why was now getting them when NEVER had any before.... all I did was go into "my controls", then from "menu" on left clicked "view topics" under "subscriptions".... for some reason "replied to topics" were showing with Type: Immediate Email Notification showing in each one.... so then selected ALL topics in the "check boxes", chose "unsubscribe" from the "drop down" menu and hit "with selected".... now shows There are no subscriptions to show, try selecting a less restrictive date range.... although before showed Type: No Email Notification in each one.... left it as that.... Seemed to do the "trick".... no more e-mails .... still "subscribed" to the forums under the "view forums" bit.... and they still show up as Type: No Email Notification within each "boxed" forum.... will change them if e-mails start .... Hope that makes sense ....

If you read my last post.... which didn't "pick" any "choons" individually.... I was saying summat similar.... Richard was a "resident" at Clifton Hall, Rotherham, and he was "progressive" with his plays.... granted.... some stuff played was "iffy", but at least, on the whole, he and the other DJ's there moved "us" on.... Stafford did the same, on the whole, but in a 60's fashion.... As for the "roadshow" crew .... we'll let them "come of age" when they're ready .... "quantum leap" may happen in reality ....
