Soul Nights - Dwindling Attendances?
vaultofsouler replied to Sean Hampsey's topic in All About the SOUL
Sean.... simple answer from how I see it.... TOO many localish nites "deciding" to open up cause they see "others" doing alright..... reasoning probably is they don't realise, or see, that because they want to "make a quick buck" it impacts on other established nites of say the last 4-7 years or so.... 3-5 years ago there was a "nice" amount of local do's, and more predominant events/niters, that kept things going.... now, by that I mean last 2-3 yrs, you get "joe bloggs and his mate" starting another "new" nite.... be it from either a northern, accross the board or modern point of view/policy.... One other point I think comes into play, through talking with other folk, is that the (and I'm only quoting the term I've heard over the last few years) "returnees" have come back, seen what's going off around the country, gone to quite a few nites/niters over the last 2-3 years, had their "belly full" and now can "pick and choose" where they go, and how often, due to my 1st paragraph.... TOO much happening so even the "better" established places begin to suffer.... This is only my opinion Sean from conversations had over the last 2 or so years around this very subject.... "die hards" like me, yourself and others are the ones feeling the impact now.... Your quite right Joe regards Ponds Forge that I'm involved in.... no denying.... Up to about 12ish months ago we had a very healthy crowd in.... it peaked on near 250 (quoted capacity) about 2-3 years ago for a few months after long, prolonged promotion in the area.... this decline, to me, is due to my "opinion" on this topic to Sean as to why we, and others, have been "hit" with numbers down.... About 2-3 months ago this "hit home" to us when the head count was well down.... we were aware of other "new" nights in the month having started, and of some "local politics" going off that we were shut/cancelled (along with other local do's, long standing, receiving the same sort of sh*t).... also had heard/got told something new locally was to be started by a "bigger" promoter wanting South Yorkshire as their next venture.... I must say that this has never materialised and no one can actually tell us "who" told them all this closed/new info.... We, as long standing local promoters, hit back in July with with a FREE nite to show that we do, indeed, do it for the love of the music and not as promotional entrenpeneurs..... we stood all costs that nite.... word went round and we had a head count, according to the doorman, of near on 160.... not upto it's best, I know, but it was "better".... last one, August, was the normal pay on the door nite and we sustained similar numbers.... Having said all this, I still think my response/answer to Sean (above) accounts for a lot of the decline.... As for Joe's statement re R&B tyope do's above, I can't comment on the reason why those type of nights haven't been affected.... unless perhaps those are the ones where "new/unknown" stuff grabs people's attention.... or, and of cousre, the punter's are deaf .... sorry Joe, only joking.... Malc.... don't know you personally.... but know of you very well by name round "our" parts.... Re Summer months.... about 2-3 years ago I would've agreed.... not these days.... again referring to my response to Sean for reasons.... Al Taylor, who I do know very well in person, that used to run the CP @ Mexborougfh with Reg before I became aware that you'd took it over earlier this year, had a similar downturn in numbers around the same time as us.... we (PF crew) and he (alan) discussed this on numerous occasions (at both venues) and, usually following it being late with ale inside us, could never understand why as "we" all enjoyed all the nights (PF & CP) and passed it of for a couple or three months with the "holiday/wirk" excuses.... later "we" realised it was associated with what I've replied to Sean (above).... for those two reasons (new nites & returnees) alone I don't think things will drastically improve.... Right.... my door bells gone 5 mins ago.... I'm getting shouted to "come on".... so I'm off to the Greatstone now.... and remember, this post is only my opinion as I see it from discussions/comments around the same self subject.... will check back later on this thread for other responses/repies/opinions.... KEEP IT SOULFUL .... -
Some more Dave.... just found an old pile of flyers.... these were amongst them.... Remember the weekend....
-
Seems there must be Dave.... Probably explains why a few people were duped and bought the boot back then asuming it was real.... as it's a direct copy of the ones like Ted and Mark's albeit a brighter blue label.... The small indefineable matrix mark seems to be the only sure way of telling.... as someone stated earlier looks like "pes" or summat.... I only put up the info that I knew of re the missing and extra bits on the boot.... having only seen/held a couple of real copies, both were like your scan (and as on JR's site).... Looks like you learn summat everyday .... p.s. and let's face it.... Ted and Mark would never play a boot .... or is that for another thread ....
-
Welcome Ross.... It's a boot if has "missing" Arranged by STICK EVANS credits under TIME: 2.45 is a give away.... and strangely the "extra" JODAX wording before the (BMI) also.... But also print definition is not as clear and defined on the brighter blue coloured label, not as "rich".... Oh.... and while your looking, no small undefinable stamp in run off.... just S-002-B.... Strange figure to offer you unless "buyer" thinks/knows it's an original and trying to get a steal.... more like £400+.... but £10- for the boot....
-
have you "remembered" this after the "Stoke" thread ....
-
Replied to your PM Ted .... Now you'll be sorted ....
-
If peeps want to know how to get these... let me know via PM.... I'll send out the PM that I've sent to others over last 2-3 months regarding this issue.... It's a case of having 2 web addresses.... the original link posted on here in one window to get "item number".... and another to "edit in" the item number in URL.... a bit of a "play around" I know.... but it does work .... peeps I've sent it to will confirm.... unless they're reading this and have sent same info themselves .... As said.... it's deffo a browser thing with the "script" used on the JM site especially where IE is concerned.... except for IE7 I believe, but that's still in the "beta" version so I haven't upgraded until it's the "full on" version and have had same prob in past.... also some other browsers have no probs I'm told.... Off out in about 30 mins so will reply to anybody later tonight (if sober), tomorrow evening after work followed by kids footy traing (if time) or deffo Wednesday when I'm on a day off.... Soulfully.... Mark

Had same problem with proggy I use for recording vinyl to PC.... stumped me for ages then was told to "double click" speaker icon in system tray.... this shows the different sources for sound.... in my case the mute button on certain things like Wav and CD Player was ticked by default by proggy when starting to record.... summat to do with ensuring no other sound would be present whilst recording.... now just have to remember to untick after finished recording stuff to be able to hear Wavs, etc., and CDs through Media Player Might be similar in your case Pete.... just a thought.... p.s. if you can't see any/all the sound sources when double clicked icon, then click options/properties and you've got the button hole tick thing for showing either playback or recording.... just tick the ones in each you want to have on view....
-
Mmmmm.... Probably someone playing about with a PC proggy, or summat, to change it I suspect then Simon.... bit like those Pete Smith did and put up on here for a laugh a good few months ago....
-
Well you learn summat everyday Simon.... it's a personal fave but I didn't think there was enough copies of this to have "other mixes" ....
-
Babble down the mike for a few secs towards the end of record.... lift stylus.... replace further back.... bingo.... longer version.... they'll never know.... honest .... Anyway.... sure there's been a 12" mp3 put up before on here in the past.... try a search ....
-
If no luck Martin I've got the 7" I can bring along if you want .... Surely that's better than a CD ....

I'll try to explain how I saw the evolution of "modern" in more detail from how I experienced it.... The tunes stated above by Sean along with Daybreak, Timeless Legend, Skip Mahoney, Tyrone Davis, Charles Johnson, etc., etc., were heard alongside all the 60's and 70's stuff at Clifton Hall.... no genres existed there.... apart from on their flyers that described you could hear "oldies" and "newies".... a "one room, one music" venue and an instigator/originator, IMO, of the term we use nowadays, "across the board".... It's only when the promoters moved onwards and upwards ending up at Queens Hall in Bradford that you then had two rooms functioning but aimed at two styles of music.... described as "Northern" (oldies) and "Modern" (newies) on the flyers.... this is where I first became aware of the term "modern" and often wondered, privately, if it was being used due to the emergence of other "newies", namely from the 60's, to avoid confusion between the new (70's and 80's) newies and old (60's) newies .... being in my early twenties I really didn't care or think too much about it.... It was also this time that the "modern" (used loosely) side of things even stretched over into the jazz funk scene and you had two roomed JF venues where northern was in the smaller room ..... going to these and being "pushed out back" meant you spent time in the "big room" and heard/got to know the tunes.... I seem to remember the Ritz alldayers in Manchester around this time have both JF and NS DJs on meaning two differing crowds in one room each waiting for the others music to finish to then get on the dance floor.... strange to watch indeed.... almost like an unadvertised "dance off".... Anyway, it was then I noticed back at the northern/modern room venues like QH there was now a distinct move into the more "dance" orientated side of "new released soul" stuff often passed/crossed over from the jazz funk scene's more soulful tunes.... I remember getting a tape back then from a guy at QH and he'd entitled it "Post Modernist Era" which was of that ilke.... so even then the modern rooms were moving away as a seperate scene IMO.... although the term "modern" stuck in there despite the suggestions on the tape title a new genre was to be unveiled... so moving up to present day, isn't that musically pretty much what the "modern scene" is still doing now with the inclusion of soulful house/garage and R&B 2-step which you can hear elsewhere at times ????.... So I suppose it could be said that Queens Hall, and other places like it back then, were the start of the "split" within the scene accumalating into what we have today.... and all the arguements in and around the "two" scenes.... as since then venues have come and gone using this two rooms/two musical syles format, evolving into what we have today.... seperate "northern" and "modern" venues/nights.... except for, of course, the "bigger venues" like Preswich, the odd smaller one, some nighters and the weekenders.... As stated, relatively few records these days pass over from the "modern" events/rooms into the "northern" events/rooms due to them having "no real connection" with each other these days.... So what about the tracks Sean listed and I listed along with others of that time.... the start of the "modern" sound I would suggest.... most of them seem to be now deemed "too old" for the Modern rooms of today and still "too new" for the Northern rooms and so you never hear them out anywhere anymore.... seems these are the "Modern Oldies" that Sean mentioned.... or is that "Northern Newies" .... perhaps there's a need for an "Inbetweeny Soul" third room for these .... I'm getting confused now, more genres to add to the list .... Having just re-read my post at this late hour I'm going stop working nights as it seems I get carried away with myself on the keyboard ....
-
So it was me after all .... why thank you kind sir .... Humbled .... p.s. glad you liked the CD as well Simon.... not sure which swap it was though.... done about 3....
-
Same here pal.... that's why I asked.... Wonder what the next one will be Modern Xover ???? .... Too many people coming up with too many pigeon holes on the scene.... must be about 20 now ....
-
You mean you've not heard it used already Sean ....

Barbara Mcnair - You're Gonna Love My Baby Video Clip
vaultofsouler replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
That's a shame Pete as I'm on nights here.... will have to find summat else to do later then.... p.s. you don't need the "link" in post, just the bit after the "=" placed between the "tube" tags .... -
Remember it Kenny.... Crofty moved there for a while from QH.... can't recall why now though.... Re rooms.... seem to remember you entered downstairs (? round back) into Bier Keller first, which was "northern room" and then didn't Bensons "modern room" open up after 2.00am upstairs when the "nightclubbers" left for their kebabs/curries.... also seem to remember a third room .... further upstairs, I think.... vaguely remember when leaving you went out via main door to Bensons and not via Bier Keller entrance, which caused confusion on your first visit as to the way to the train station .... Or is my memory and recollection of the place that bad ....
-
Couldn't have put it better Sean.... I first "heard" the term, and even used on flyers, from the Queens Hall nighters to "plug" the downstairs room.... Can't say I heard it used at Clifton Hall although, as you say, a lot of the early "modern" stuff got an airing there.... I personally associate the modern sound as from early 80's onwards (a la CH & QH).... but it seems these days, IMO, that the term "modern" has been backtracked to include some 70's sounds.... hence "modern" events stating "sounds from the 70's to present day" on the flyers.... bemusing or amusing, I don't know.... don't you just love all the pigeon hole genres ....
-
why thank you Simon .... but obviously a "namesake" .... Never realised I had one though.... although heard/know of two brothers , ?Kevin and ??? Etheridge, from Norwich way I think.... SWONS ....
-
Steve... your a "gud egg" BUT.... why does every response to any thread on "tunes" from you always.... and I mean ALWAYS.... portrays your good self as "the be all and end all" collector of "unknown stuff" and anybody else is, to quote you, "catch up collecting/come into money collectors".... just struggle to get my heafd around it sometimes.... Surely a "soulie" who buys/collects records is just that.... "a soulie".... whether with or without knowledge or money.... to me they are at least.... Not knocking you pal .... it's just I keep reading the same sort of resonses to other peolple's replies to records and just don't quite get it ....
-
Probably because.... erm.... younger.... and, erm.... off our heads ....
