  1. Thanks Chalky! The Americans don't seem to be very bothered about trivia as we are, I live near a tourist attraction, Leeds castle and my local, the White Horsre gets its fair share of overseas tourists - anyhow, I got talking to two white guys, in their early 60s and from Chicago and said they were into Soul, so I got pretty excited. When I asked who their favourite artists was.....................Bruce Springsteen
  2. I'm in touch with Gerard, the guy who runs that site, he's as much in the dark as the rest of us!!
  3. Another guy who s involved, Larry Blasingaine also has a couple of different spellings,
  4. This is nice too, I only have the Blues & Soul ad from the UK! What music paper is this from please?
  5. Thanks for this, I'll certainly quote this title!
  6. I'm trying to wrap up a book on Jerry Murray and would like to get it out before the end of the year. It's been on my back burner for many years. I have some questions that I can't get answered in the US even by the few folk who really knew him, e.g. Sammy Kaplan and Bernie Hayes. So here goes - Was he Tyrone Davis' cousin? Was he born in Greenville MS? He died in a car accident in Mississippi in the mid 70s but exactly where and when? As a child was he raised in St Louis or Chicago? A guy called Larry Payton worked with him in the early 60s, Payton had Larry O records, who was this guy? Art Morton owned the Soulville record store in Chicago, what street was it on? Why did `Oolya-Coo` / `Bacardi` ABC / Paramount #10787 get to the eleventh hout then got pulled? Finally, who was Joe Berry, the last release on Jerry O records? Is he the same guy as on Ron's? Or is it Jerry O with J E R R Y O simply remixed? I'd really appreciate any help at all! Thanks.
  7. Joe Berry, (Do)The Wang Dang Doodle / Inst. Jerry O 112 Five Du Tones, Mountain of Love / Outside The Record Hop, One-Derful 4836 Thanks!
  8. Barry Tasker, who was the top Soul guy in Manchester at the time (and probably still so!) gave me this T shirt over 20 years ago. It's been proudly worn on three continents! The membership card must be '71 or '72 as I was born in Oct '50.
  9. Thanks John, I had looked at this previously but it doesn't go back further than 489. I specifically want 467. I'm trying to do the impossible - a complete Jerry O story. Boo-Ga-Loo #467, `Cole Slaw`, an instrumental by Milton Jefferson is documented in various places. It's a record that I have never seen or heard and am very dubious about. In 1957 RCA issued a 45 by Hilton Jefferson, `Cole Slaw` the B side to `The Hour Of Parting`, it was an instrumental version of the original by Frank Culley on Atlantic. It is of course possible that Sammy Kaplan resurrected and re-issued the side but I very much doubt it and so for me #467 remains an unfilled gap. Cheers Keith
  10. Does anyone know where I can match song titles to Archer dead wax numbers please? I mainly need the 400s from around '67. Thanks
  11. Hi Lee, I tried to PM you but the system said I couldn't, I just need to enquire about a 45 please. Thanks

  13. Amazing 60s Soul show, Fred Hughes, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Ramsey Lewis...classic Soul for an hour!
  14. I've spoken to Charlene at some length and as far as I know she is concentrating on the 60s and again, as far as I know she's only interviewed folk that were tuning in, in the pirate / AFN / Lux days. I think that her quest is to try to understand why white British youth was so into black American music. DaveNPete, when she called in here we had long discussion about the main definition of the expression `White Sheets...` I did explain that it was originally used to describe white American kids in the 50s who were listening to black R&B / RnR although often forbidden by their parents, and she knew that but is simply re-vamping the expression to look at the British version some ten years on. Her dad was had a big Calypso / Blue Beat collection in the late 50s early 60s and so she knows where it's at I feel.
  15. A young lady film producer has recently made a documentary about teenagers in the 60s and early 70s who were into Soul and Motown and used to listen to it in secret on their transistor radios under the covers in bed. Here's a link to a trailer, I think it's worth supporting. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/an-undercover-revolution-documentary-short-music-history#/
  16. Did any of you guys attend the Tamla Motown show at either the Gaumont Ipswich on 11th March or Portsmouth's Guildhall on the 12th please? Or do you know anyone who did? Thanks.
  17. Yorkshire Motown fans will no doubt be interested to know that at the York Festival of Ideas, Motown author and aficionado Adam White will be giving a talk and discussing his new book; Motown: The Sound of Young America on Monday 13th June, 6:30pm, it's free admission but you will need to book, please see the link below. https://yorkfestivalofideas.com/2016/talks/motown-sound-of-young-america/
  18. Roburt, that would be amazing if you could, I phoned the theatre and they said because it had changed hands a few times since 1964, the only records they held were old programmes but they didn't offer to check 'em out I'm afraid. My doubts are rooted in that KIM and EVD were supposed to be there for the whole week commencing 7th Nov '64 but they surely would only do one night? Can't wait for your findings!
  19. Thanks, I'd heard a similar theory, it can't have sold that many thru' 1962, it is quite rare as you know.
  20. In the 30th October issue of NME it stated that Kim and EVD were arriving in time to go on the tour, (6th Nov) but as you say it was abandoned. They seemed to have been billed to appear at the New Theatre, Oxford on the 7th for a week but I can't find much proof of that but they did commence a short tour at Shrewsbury Granada on the 20th finishing at Colston Hall, Bristol on the 29th. She also did various radio and TV appearances, Open House, Saturday Club and RSG! I have several previously unseen shots of her with EVD, his band, Dave Godin, fan club members etc in London that will appear in my forthcoming book; `Hitsville! The birth of Tamla Motown`, due out this summer.
  21. Does anyone know why this LP had two different sleeves please? Issued April 1964, #229. I appreciate that the black one is misspelled but I heard it came out after the other. Thanks.
  22. Thanks you guys, this is what I have at present: Under promoter Roy Tempest he embarked upon a hectic schedule including filming RSG! soon after arriving then appearing at the Flamingo, early session then the In Place, Marylebone and then back to the Flamingo, Soho for the all-night session all on the 21st he then appeared at the Rhodes Centre, Bishops Stortford, the New All Star Club in Bishopsgate and the Marquee, both in London on the 22nd. The Cavern, Liverpool and the Oasis, Manchester on the 23rd. The Orchid Ballroom, Purley, the 26th. The Ricky Tick, Windsor, the 27th. Mr McCoy’s Middlesbrough, the 28th. The Plaza, Old Hill, Birmingham, the 29th. The Flamingo on the 30th for the afternoon session. The Klooks Kleek, West Hampstead, London, the 1st February. The Scotch of St. James, London, on the 2nd. Carna-B-hive, London on the 3rd. The Domino Night Club, Manchester, the 4th. The Cue Club, London on the 5th. The Dungeon Nottingham on the 6th. The Marquee, London, early session then the Rhythm & Bluesville Galaxy Club, St Joseph’s Hall, Basingstoke on the 7th. While in London he also appeared at the Royal Ballroom, Tottenham, North London and Disc Weekly carried dates for unspecified venues in Harlow on February 1st, Southampton on the 2nd and Birmingham on the 5th.
  23. Does anyone know what date Stevie appeared at the Tottenham Royal Ballroom in Jan or Feb 1966 please? He was most likely backed by the Sidewinders. Also, Disc Weekly gives the following dates for him to appear at unspecified venues; Harlow, 1st Feb. Southampton 2nd and Birmingham on the 3rd, did these ever happen? He was on at the Plaza, Old Hill, Birmingham on the 29th. Lastly, he appeared at the Oasis in Manchester on the 23rd Jan but I've read two detailed accounts of him also being at the Top Ten, Belle Vue, Manchester but the Manchester Evening News does not carry an ad for that. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
  24. Stevie Wonder's contact to appear at the Cavern, Liverpool has recently come to light. Search under google for details. A poster advertising Alvin Cash there has also surfaced, go to this site's search option, type in Modus, hit archive poster exhibition, then poster exhibition pdf. There's also a great Spellbinders poster on Modus somewhere that also came from the Cavern source..
  25. Hi Mark Commencing in December '63 there were six editions of `The Mary Wells and Tamla Motown Newsletter` issued. Then In January '65 The Mary Wells bit was dropped and simplified to the Tamla Motown Appreciation Society and Hitsville Vol 1, No 1 came out, with one each month until issue 12 in Feb '66. In October '65 there was a one-off memorial edition for member Mick Page. Issue 2 that you asked about is called `Clive's Report`, an account of Clive Stone's trip to Motown in December '64. I'd be happy to send you a colour scan of issue 2 in exchange for a scan of the letter you have? Re the 45, I still don't understand how some folk who were members of TMAS were never offered it in the autumn of '64 and then as seems likely when more were sent over, they were still unaware of them but by all accounts DG had shed loads of them? It is hard to tell how accurate DG's membership figures were.
