  1. Dave Evisons Number Ones.
  2. For anyone who thinks this record is good, might I suggest you invest heavily in some of these?...
  3. Anyone paying more than £50 for a UK copy, or £40 for a U.S. copy wants their bumps feeling. I left several behind on my last trip to the states because the sellers wanted around $30 each for them and I couldn't see any profit in them (the £ was at $1.34 at the time)
  4. Can't say I've ever seen an issue. UK copy on Manships is a stupid price, and this is rarer.
  5. Boots on Crosstone. Never seen a Red Bird copy.
  6. It's not the VAT that gets me - it's the Post Offices 'Handling Charge', which more often than not makes up more than 60% of the customs charge. Robbing cnuts.
  7. I bid $600 with an additional snipe of $1099... which I thought was top whack considering condition. Another case of "Full Wallet, Empty Head Syndrome"?
  8. If you read the ad he tells you to ignore the buy-it-now price - he's put a stupidly inflated one in so that he can effectively take limitless offers on it - he's done that so the auction to be a 'what you bid is what you pay'.
  9. The fast version of this is excellent - a real 'stormer' - and because of this, this version does nowt for me...
  10. Exactly the point I was trying to make - there's loads of Doo Wop/Blues boots/ re-issues out there but not many that would be searched for by the "R&B" collectors/DJs - now it's the 'safe' R&B tracks that are being pressed up - how long before the proper R&B / Northern crossover tracks get booted?
  11. 'Kinnell Simon - you moan about R&B then put this thread up...
  12. Soul Sams finest hour.
  13. Trouble is Mark, that would have involved having to play records that featured Black American artists...
  14. RW Discoveries? The man couldn't discover his own arse with both hands.

They both sell 'each others' stock. Spoke to Joe on Richie's Phone... so they are not one and the same person (although you never actually SEE them in the one place at the one time ). Richie is one of the USA's most 'respected' Record dealers. Loves the high life... but a bit of a pain in the ass (IMO). All the Prix estate ended up with them and the Frederick Hymes 45's came from them also. The store in Vegas is all top Dollar. You get the impression he doesn't actually want to sell anything... but he does have some very nice titles. Would be surprised if they've 'ceased operations' online voluntarily though! 16. Here's some posts from around the time... Posted 06 January 2005 - 10:12 PM john parker, on Jan 6 2005, 04:58 PM, said: would be interested to see one of the Royal Esquires that has "turned up"- I have an original pre-find copy- it may be interesting to see what is in the run out groove <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've already done this John, they were both identical, just a case of the record turning up in quantity. Ady. ============================================================================================================================================================================= Posted 08 January 2005 - 07:41 PM Soulsville, on Jan 6 2005, 06:39 AM, said: I'd be interested to see that email. I'm sure someone on this site contacted him and he stated that he bought the remaining stock of Fab Vegas and Prix. Did he definately tell you they were re-presses???? Cheers, Jamie <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I contacted him and questioned him about the validity of The Royal Esquires and Frederick Hymes The prix stuff he said he bought directly from the owner to be honest he has a lot of prix stuff for sale thats not worth pressing so that might be kosha He also said that the Fab Vegas stuff he got directly form the owner Both times he wouldn't reveal the quantities but he said there wasn't a lot I then asked him about the potential for "copying" this stuff He said the task is practically impossible not only do you have to have acess to the masters and they have to be in the right condition but the right type of vinyl and the right type of paper He said the type of paper they used in the 6t's has not been available for a long time it was found to have toxic problems He then said he will make avialable custom presings of choons that "northern" collectors know are repro's things like the Ringleaders All Of My Life (which to be honest i have no problem with for the simple reason it's never been released therefor totally un acesible Isnt it a 1 off acetate) Obviously he probably figures that if we are worth our salt we should know that Towanda Barnes/Ohio Players is really only available on the Trip album Although someone mentioned on Soultalk (might have been Chalkie) that the O Players did cut love slipped on a Compass acetate. Which makes sense when you think about it "cos Searling never played Love Slipped from an Lp it was a c/u 45 DJ ======================================================================================================================================================================================================================
  17. Whilst this seller does sell bootlegs/reissues - it is well documented that he turned up the entire Prix label in quantity - including all the shite releases on the label. The Royal Esquires I've seen all appear to be absolutely 'bob on' - just very new as they hadn't seen the light of day for 30 odd years.
  18. Probably more R&B fans who are committed to going to allnighters than you would give credit for - whether there's an R&B room there or not...
  19. The way I see it - so many purely 'R&B' room tracks are getting main room spins - the folks who attend multi-room venues and would have spent half of their night in the R&B room no longer have the need to... so it's more a case of the attendees getting their R&B fix without having to leave their non-R&B friendly friends in the main room. When I started the FLIPside allnighters (with Mark Stewart) R&B was Northern Souls poor relation - the only R&B tracks getting played at nighters were cast iron Stafford plays - which were few and far between and anything new was looked down on - since then tracks like Charles Sheffield, The Five Royales, Lou Lawton, The Idols, Zu Zu Man, Leo Price etc have been picked up by the main rooms and hammered to the point where some of them have become anthems at Oldies events like "Soul In The Sun" - all of these tracks were already well known (even overplayed in some cases) on the R&B scene. Without the R&B DJs picking up on these tracks they would never have crossed over - so IMO a scene that doesn't have space for an out and out R&B room (or Crossover/Modern room for that matter) is going to become staler faster. Is it dead? Don't think so? Probably just evolving. (p.s. And by R&B scene, I'm including both the Mod and Popcorn scenes as well)
  20. I think you may have something there Davie - the Hideaway seems to be doing okay for numbers - but then that is soul night hours. We'll see if it's dead at allnighters or not when the reports of Radcliffes R&B room come in.
  21. No, but as stated - you can no longer buy the titles "blind". Ray Charles is the perfect example - it's not an expensive record, and at first glance it looks pretty close to the original - but upon closer inspection the logo is missing some of the correct colour. But if you didn't have the knowledge of what the label should look like, or if you were in a poorly lit venue then it's probably close enough to fool.
  22. They have had it 'carvered'. No vinyl release apart from "possibly" a Kent LP - I think it was a Kent CD, but not sure if it made it to vinyl.
  23. One of the best things about collecting rare R&B records was the fact that they had slipped under the radar of the bootleggers, so with the odd exception (Screaming Joe Neal, Contours on Motown) you were pretty safe buying blind. With this spate of look-a-likes, that's now gone out of the window.
