In my very dogged opinion, use of the microphone is an essential part of DJ'ing. I find it is usually the ones who don't have the bottle to get up there and use one that are the most vocal against the use of them. Use of the mic is part of the DJs craft..... and if your missing that part of the experience, then you're not listening to a DJ. I know people harp on about a good DJ being able to make sets flow, without use of a mic... and this is true.... but a good DJ also knows that he can change tempos and styles of tunes without them grating on the audience, with a crafty bit of mic work. I too was scared of the mic, as I think I sound like a thick northern oik, but then again it's not too far from the truth... WOOF!

£70 ish.... WOOF!

I'm 4 and a half in Dog Years. For my prize I claim a string of sausages or a big stick. WOOF!
-
I have a white demo on Sunflower..... but the label is the same both sides. Pride was a re-issue label as far as I'm aware.... they re-issued albums by the Small Faces on it in the 1970s... maybe this was a planned re-issue on the back of a 70s hit? (Can't think of any 70s hits though) WOOF!

Listening to it, i'd say it's definately not Gladys Knight.... different texture to her voice... Gladys K has a bit more oomph.... Still a nice track though.... WOOF!

Mary Saxton on Quality? WOOF!

Does anyone know who "raresoul0" is on eBay..... He / She currently has a Five Royales 'Catch That Teardrop' listed at a starting bid of £450..... :o A hefty price tag indeed, especially for a record that is fairly common..... and the write up is comical..... 6/7 copies in Britain? if that's the case I can probably name the owner of every single copy..... Talk about "bigging" it up..... Harumph! WOOF!

"Pickey's dog? Who are you?" I'm not keeping my identity secret for any reason other than a bit of fun.... in fact if you ask around on here, there are several people who know/'think they know who I am.... and please spell Pikeys dog right next time you address me  "There is already funk played at northern nights. " A very small percentage granted.... and to be honest, what is played does very little for me.... and I do actually collect Soul Music of many different varieties, tempos and shock horror, the odd Funk record. "Although I'm sure that because you "promoted Soul and Funk nights in the early 90s that suffered poor attendances" you'll already know all the new records the funk scene has turned up the past few years and you'll be able to back up your buffon like statement that dispite all of the crowded clubs, the 'deepfunk scene is "little more than a slack handful of very vocal, and extremely anal collectors" I have followed Mr Darges/BBE/Various other compilations.... some great records on there, but not i.m.h.o suited for the Northern Scene. (Apart from the odd Modern Soul track that is slipped in of course). The main part of my argument (if that's what you'd call it) is the fact that the Funk scene is a smaller scene built around a few clubs in a couple of cities - Why the need for Northern events to book Funk DJs? When there are plenty of very capable DJs already out there (Too many at the moment if truth be told) Whats a buffon? .... btw winding up the "Funk" crowd is such fun...taking a leaf out of my good friend Mr Mik Parrys book here.... "And if you don't like what's on offer you can always promote your own night, even if it is easier and more fun to moan and cause trouble on message forums. " Nothing is as much fun as moaning, or causing trouble on message boards, but , I already promote a night - a bi-monthly Allnighter featuring 60s Soul and R&B..... yup... those R&B records that the Funk scene have also got stuck into recently.... I've even booked Funk DJs...... but a Funk room without punters might as well be bedroom collectors playing with themselves??? WOOF!

For every new person attracted, you can bet ten would be put off.... Sounds a bit staid and old fashioned, but people on the Northern Scene like a night to do what it says on the tin.... so Funk wouldnt go down particularly well. This entire posting smacks of people hitching there wagon onto Northern Soul because there "own" scene isn't big enough to provide DJ'ing spots for the number of "DJs".... I promoted Soul and Funk nights in the early 90s that suffered poor attendances... albeit in the North of England (Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield). Apart from Keb Darges events at Madame JoJos there isn't the numbers required to class the Funk Scene as such.... really its little more than a slack handful of very vocal, and extremely anal collectors :o :o I have very little to do with the Funk scene these days.... and listening to the Disco stuff that Keb plays, he doesnt have much to do with it either.... WOOF!

Pretty astounding comments I agree, but sadly all true..... Granted hes being doing it for years... so you'd think he would have had the common decency to turn up with vinyl..... The common decency to ask permission..... The common decency to thank the DJ after the fact..... Truth be told... Rotherham Soul (Ian)... didn't even bring up this topic... I did... As an example to all of this gents actions and the fact that someone saying he never played cds was untrue. At the end of the day this was during the time when Mr Roberts wasn't interested in the Northern Scene... pre his big comeback....and the various events that he runs.... so perhaps it was just a case of him not giving a toss and turning up with a box of cds to rattle out a oldies set to people who 'wouldn't know better'? Cynical? Moi? WOOF!
-
So you must be Ian.... lol In that case you can qualify all of what I said above. As for Rollemcowboys comments.... There you go, from the horses mouth... he did turn up with cds.... WOOF!
-
Didn't what? Turn up with box of cds? If they werent cds he must have been expecting a large tea-party cos he was carrying a large number of shiny silver coasters DJ from another DJs box? Yep, know the lad who owns them pretty well.... Play boots? Yep, as above Ask for permisson? When I pointed out to the lad who's records they were he wasn't bothered that they were being played without him having the decency to ask permission Post-humously ask permission and thank the lad whos records they were? Got me on that one, as I stated before, I'd walked off in disgust.... being young and impressionable at the time, when the 'top name DJ' turns up with no records it tends to influnece ones opinion. Now, please qualify your statement as I'd love to hear the official line as I'm quite obviously either deranged, have it in for Mr Roberts, or a liar... ;-) WOOF!

Utter bollox. I was at a do in Rotherham one night, a few years ago, when the venerable Mr Roberts turned up to DJ carrying a box of CDs.... Only thing was he didn't know that there weren't any Cd decks wired up. Never mind, he just proceeded to play records out of another DJs box without even asking the DJs permission.... whats more they were a DJ who only did the warm up, and affectionately called his box of records "The Beercrate Bootlegs", cause thats what they were...... Not even sure if he thanked the lad afterwards as I'd already walked off in disgust. Keep The Faith my arse. WOOF!

Also fairly easy to pick up on 7" (UK Tamla Motown) Lists at between £15 - £20. Heavy plays in South yorkshire over the last ten plus years..... become a little played out if anything. Managed to pick one up in a natty picture sleeve for 90p ;-) WOOF!

"I'm Running A Losing Race" on Sack has got to be my fave.... That beefy bass and lolloping beat gets me every time. But then all of his 4Brothers recordings as Tyrone (The Wonder Boy) rank up there as well. WOOF!
