Only just seen this, sad news, used to look forward to his lists back in the day and many a good tune off him, like all say at really reasonable prices, and was a pleasure to speak to when I rang up.
RIP John

That's exactly why I'm found of their 3 singles. I can't argue against your argument, you're absolutely right. But I must say that the treatment they did with 'baby you're messing up my mind', borrowing the same backing track of the Phonetics 'what good' on Trudel, with the continuous "off-beat" thrills me more every time I hear it. I do feel alone at times when I play it to friends. To me it gives the tune the extra nonchalance that their Voices are bringing in there. In "crying..." I love the fact that they saturated the track with "stressed" vocals which gives the tune an "emergency" factor. While 'soul clinic' on Marlu is definitely the less "northern" track of the 3, it's only kind of mental. These stuffs were made with bits and pieces and required some creative imagination to compete with the big guns out there. I just love music like that.
Your not alone there, Voices is a big fave of mine, ever since I heard Dean Anderson play it years ago, I play it out myself and never noticed it having the same backing as Phonetics!

Thanks for confirming. We didn't have anything like the knowledge then that we have now.
I had a tape of Richard playing "I Don't Like To Lose" saying it'd be coming out on Grapevine for Xmas "..and thats not a rumour"!
-
Vashionettes and Greg Perry you can borrow
-
Dave McCadden may have something to do with it, Richard played along with it for sure....
-
The Orchids - Kool Kat was a definite "true" rumour, along with it's upcoming release on Grapevine!!

Used to be a fairly common record

Only 10 Derek?
Good to see you last week my friend

I think they are Detroit recordings, I don't have the records anymore but, don't remember anything concrete suggesting they were west coast pressings?
with regard to the "DOC" records I don't believe there was any real Philly connection just a red herring to throw Motowns west coast office off the scent.
