I was barely 15 the first time I went, I was one of the kids who found the scene in the early 80s, when places like the Casino, Mecca and Torch were just mystical places from long ago that had little relevance to me at that time. The 'old guard' in the queue outside making it clear we werent welcome.

From the word go it was clear to me even then the place was something special though.

It was my first nighter proper, and what a place to start?! The 100 club has (by some) been rather inaccurately labelled the home of the beat ballad retrospectively......those who were there of course know different, Clarky, Keb and Butch amongst others (Ady played Jerry Butlers "All the way" as a new release!) ,were always playing 70s soul from those days but its the 100 clubs consistant championing of new discoveries from any era that has over the last 30 odd years kept me there.

Too many great nights to mention and although seeing Maxine Brown on that stage was pretty incredible, probably my fondest memory of a live act was seeing Ray Pollard in 1991, I still think about it often, I was stood at the front of the stage, tears streaming down mý face singing my head off..

Another night, Mick Smith playing The Isleys "Why when love is gone" as we walked in and the place was going beserk, it had only been open 10 minutes, or Keb spinning in his spot by the door, Clarky playing The Excuses, Garland Green in a huge huggee bear coat, the 10th anniversary, The Scots coming down and tearing the place right up  the first time I heard the Just Brothers "Go on and Laugh" ,"Gettin to me", "Torture", Johnny Maestro, Paramount Four, Willie & The Handjives, meeting good friends and too much stout......

The nostalgia is great but its the new music that has always set the benchmark for me and makes me want to get on that train as often as I can as I rapidly approach 50.

40 years as the best rare soul nigher ever, not too shabby.

Massive gratitude to the bloke with the surname no one can seem to spell correctly and everyone else who has made it what it is..

See you on that terrible dancefloor on Saturday.🍺👍

“Why When Love Is Gone” was one of Rogers......

This record is completely 100% legit and probably the best copy ever available for sale in the world.

The others looked relatively dark because they were comparatively worn and moisture damaged. Also the lighting/exposure/flash will play a part in what colour the label presents in photographs. If the buyer gets what's in that photo it's totally and utterly authentic.

    Agree with Gareth

500? I wouldn't even pay a fiver for it. A record Ian Levine would play as a northern soul holy grail on his podcast, it's that bad.

but seeing how many are after it on Discogs I'm in a minority. So real problem seems to be my taste in soul music😂

After Ian, started playing it, I was made offers I couldn’t refuse, trades for one cash for the other, pretty average record agreed, actually preferred the other side.

Well, I was just giving my opinion.  We have no proof it WASN'T recorded in Detroit.  Just because I've never seen the name "Timmie Williams" associated with any Detroit productions doesn't mean he couldn't be a Detroiter.  Balk and Micahnik also recorded some sessions in Detroit (Volumes' American Arts and Twirl productions, as well as other Twirl sessions).  And, just because I say the recording doesn't SOUND like Detroit, doesn't make it a certainty.  We need to hear whether it was recorded in Detroit or New York from an inside source, or someone who has seen its documentation.  All I can say is that if someone placed a gun to my head and said "Was it New York or Detroit?-if you're wrong I shoot!", I would guess New York.  But, if I wasn't forced, and could bet or not, I wouldn't risk the farm betting either way.  But, then I'm conservative when betting, as my guesses aren't ALWAYS right.  😉

It’s got none of the hallmarks you associate with Detroit records ie the Impact Volumes 45’s, I always thought it was New York like the majority of Twirl / Embee product?

Not sure tony  I've had three copies of LNS over the years can't remember who had any of them must be a age thing  . Do remember it having cue burn though  so it may have got to you via who I sold it to. When I got it of keb it was my top want did the deal on stage at Stafford  traded cairos which both keb & guy wanted

I remember him getting Cairo’s he brought it along to The Thursday night do I ran in London, c/u Precisions and Al Williams the other side, I preferred the Don’t Fight It side, much to Kebs annoyance, but when he played it at Stafford we were on the floor for both!

The week before he  had the cairos off me. Good old days of record dealing  I did get little nicky sole out of him lol .Have to catch up sometime  .you still in Notts?

Where did you copy of LNS, go to as I also had Kebs old copy complete with cue burn on the “You Said”side?

Following on from last weeks photo of Nabay, I thought I’d follow up with the other photo everyone also wanted to see: Gardenia ‘Dena’ Barnes.

I was lucky enough to meet her on the same trip I met Nabay in 1991. She was actually very easy to find surprisingly; one lead; one phone call from that lead to her daughter and that was it.

The day Jacqui Kavanagh and I met her she was actually in mourning  at the wake of a close friend, with other ladies at a friends house, but she was still happy to meet us.

She was a lovely lovely lady, and I feel so priveledged to have met and interviewed her; probably the most emotional experience of my whole collecting life. More so when she told me that meeting us,  and finding out about how much her songs were loved over here.... had.......

‘not just made my day, its made my life’.

    ... priceless!

Again, this is a teaser for more to come, but I thought now was the time for a quick photo.

Sadly she’s not with us anymore, but those lyrics and that plaintive sweet voice will live on with us all forever.

Again, remember you saw this photo here first.

I hope you all enjoy seeing this photo as much ad you’ve enjoyed her songs.

    Tim

    Wow....worth the wait Tim
