  1. Some interesting comments here. My copy has There You Are on the flipside, I'd forgotten how good it is. In my opinion she was at her best on slower songs. I saw her at the Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road back in the day with my wife. She talked a lot about a certain sexual practice but perhaps this isn't the thread for that, lol. Recently bought her version of This Is It on a 45, fine record imo. I think my copy of AHFS is an original issue as it's got the A on the House For Sale side, according the John Manship British issue book the repress has it on both sides. But as it's a present it wouldn't matter that much I guess. Actually she'd probably know but hopefully wouldn't hold it against me. SoundsOKEH mentioned clubs in the Manchester area where you'd hear it. Was at Walkden with my friend recently, didn't hear it on my visit but it was a memorable trip for several reasons, don't think I'll dance there again, lol.
  2. At Soul Giant in no particular order: Kae Williams - Our love is dying Carol & Gerri- How can i ever find a way / On you heartache looks good Jimmy Soul Clark - I'll be your champion Al McArthur - His true love for you Spandells - Say no girl But so many other great tunes were played, thanks to all the DJs.
  3. Thanks for the replies. I want a copy for a good friend, so will have to keep looking. I am puzzled about these stupid prices. I could undertand if a record is getting plays in a lot of clubs but haven't heard this out for ages.
  4. Bearing in mind that prices generally seem to have gone mad can anyone tell me what is a reasonable price for an original Spring issue of A House For Sale by Millie Jackson please?
  5. He certainly had a good innings, 89 years old. One of the most successful rhythm and blues artistes and a pioneer of rock'n'roll. First hit in 1949/50 with The Fat Man followed by loads of others, many now standards in both R&B and R&R. I remember hearing and liking his records when I was at school: I'm Ready, Be My Guest, I Want To Walk You Home, Walking To New Orleans and these are the first to spring to mind. RIP Fats, thanks for the music. :
  6. Been away in Rhodes for a week so my first soul do on my return was Soul Giant in London, which is turning into a must visit event. Loads of great tunes played but will pick this five, first four played by Carl and Maria Willingham, the last by my friend Sean Towers. Allen Sisters - I'm In With The Downtown Crowd The Magnetics - Count The Days Reggie Alexander - It's Better The Topics - Hey Girl (Where Are You Going) Idris Muhammad - I'm A Believer

  8. Presumably by King Henry VIII with vocal backing by his Six Wives. Very hard to find on original vinyl.
  9. Got the awful news on Wednesday from John Baxter, couldn't believe it, I'd only been speaking to Jim the previous week. He'd said he had heart trouble, but I didn't expect this. He had excellent musical taste, I bought quite a few records from him, but most important he was a really good decent guy. My condolences to Liz and the family. RIP Jim.
  10. My all time favourite style in soul music. Love to hear these tunes out, especially as enders at a nighter. But they can be pretty upsetting after a love affair ends.
  11. Hi Chris, You'll have to ,bear with me on that, will listen again tomorrow and try to note the tracks I'm aware of and the times of the others. Cheers, Geoff
  12. Very nice. A playlist would be nice as there's quite a few I don't know.
  13. Thanks Andy, quite tempted to have it cut to a 45.
  14. Is Up & Outta Here by R Kelly available on a 45 rpm single? Great record, modern soul but with a slightly older feel imo.
  15. I trust this is the right forum to ask this but could someone please give me the date of the next Bury allnighter?
  16. Apologies, I read the heading wrong. Ali Mcarthur, sorry totally different singer. Doh!
  17. It's on the Kent Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities volume 3. Absolutely gorgeous record.
  18. Thanks Robb, I've listened to the Hector Rivera tracks but can't tell who is singing. As RP has passed away it's something that may never be solved.
  19. Went to Soul Giant in Haggerston yesterday, a very enjoyable alldayer, although I did leave early due to stuff to do at home. A good mix of styles with these five as my picks. Janice Christian - Just A Bad Thing Chuck Ray - I Don't Mind Cynthia & The Imaginary Three - That's What I Am Betty Moerer - Speed Up LaShawn Collins - What You Gonna Do With My Love
  20. Thanks for replying Andy. I got my information from Marv Goldberg's site, he lists three Hector Rivera tracks as having RP on them: BARRY (as vocalist with the Hector Rivera Orchestra)1011 At The Party/Do It To Me - 66 1012 Playing It Cool/I Got My Eye On You - 671020 I Want A Chance For Romance/Hueso (We So) - 67 (It's possible that "Hueso" is an instrumental) I've had a search and found a thread on SS in 2005 about Latin Soul and it seems that it may be David Coleman on some of these. All rather nice whoever is singing. I used to enjoy your sets at Scenesville. Hope you are well.
  21. Thanks for compiling this and posting it on Mixcloud. Absolutely superb, this is my favourite style of soul music, just really gets to you.
  22. While browsing the web I came across Marv Goldberg's R&B page where I read that Ray Pollard had been the singer with the Hector Rivera Band on three singles. One of these was I Want A Chance For Romance which I've heard at soul nights. Is it Ray on this? Sorry if this topic has been dealt with in the past.
  23. This was really popular when I started going out to soul nights again in 2002. Think it's a great double sider and always dance to both sides if I hear it played out. Would be interesting to know who the ladies were, but there so many mysteries like this in our music.
  24. Another great podcast. Thank you very much.
  25. Saddened to read of the death of this musical icon. I seem to have known Chuck Berry's music all my life. When I was a kid the first music I liked was rock'n'roll and I was given a magazine about it, with features on the current stars, Elvis, Bill Haley, etc. Also small articles about other artistes, including Chuck Berry. It mentioned Maybelline and how the BBC banned it due to the lyrics mentioning Cadillacs and Fords, can't have advertising on the Beeb. This sparked my interest but in those far off days you had only the BBC Light Programme and Radio Luxembourg, the latter's reception was very often distorted. I think the first Berry song I heard was Schooldays but it may have been a British cover version, possibly Don Lang and his Frantic Five, lol. Chuck was enjoying hits in the USA and seemed to be able to write songs that echoed American teenage life and their concerns. Amazing he could do that considering his background. He didn't have much chart success in the 50s in the UK, Sweet Little Sixteen and Johnny B Goode I think. But he was popular with my friends and me. Then he was sent to prison for taking a girl, not sure if she was under age, across state lines in the USA, a federal offence. This seemed to coincide with Chess moving for London records to Pye International. At the same time there was a growing interest in rhythm and blues, partly due to the softness of much of the pop music of the time. Beat groups used his songs in their acts and of course the Beatles and Rolling Stones initially relied on American songs, and included his songs in their repertoire. The early Mods liked Chuck and other Chess R&B artistes very much and my early visits to clubs like the Scene were dominated by that sort of sound. I bought Come On by him after my first visit to the Scene and I bought an LP, think it was called Chuck Berry on Stage with dubbed applause. On it Sweet Little Sixteen was called Surfing USA, after the Beach Boys had nicked the tune for that song, and Memphis Tennessee was titled Memphis, after Lonnie Mack's instrumental cover that had been a US hit. I sold that album, now wish I hadn't. Chuck toured in 1964 with the Animals, the Nashville Teens and Carl Perkins whose records were being played at the Mod clubs at the time, along with other rock'n'roll records, not sure if anyone else remembers that but the evidence is on Ready Steady Go. Chuck did his duckwalk and sang many of his hits, really exciting show. I may have seen him again, but not sure. And of course he had his biggest hit here with My Ding-A -Ling, surely his worst moment. There were stories later of his attitude of doing the barest minimum at a live show, who knows? Whatever happened in the latter part of his life he is one of the most important artistes of the second half of the 20th century. Elvis Presley may have been the king of rock'n'roll but Chuck was definitely the poet laureate. RIP Chuck.
