  1. Speaking of one legged dancers, back in 1965 when Sam The Sham's Woolly Bully was being played in the clubs I frequented there was a special dance to it. Can't remember much about it but it did involve standing, think you had your arms sticking out and holding your hips, kicking your right leg out, as if you were kicking someone up the backside. There must have been more to it but I can't remember. But it was featured on Ready Steady Go, so might be on one of the videos that I recorded when they were shown again was it the 80s or 90s, courtesy of Dave Clark who owned them. However not one for the one legged Northern Soul dancers now. What with all the publicity about our music and scene at the moment, much of which makes it a joke, I now say I like rare soul music, usually stops the conversation immediately.
  2. Great!!! Thanks for posting these Pete. Hope you do some more of the podcasts of soul from the early days.
  3. It was a bubblegum record from the late 60s, remember it at the time. Absolute rubbish imo, similar to the ghastly Simon Says. If this was played at a night purported to be a soul night I'm shocked. Was it the Wigan Casino pop era? I never went there so hard to judge but am amazed that things like Nine Times Out Of Ten were played. Did it sound good when everyone was "stimulated"? I was going to say thank goodness things are better now but a friend visited a certain club in the south east of England and he told me they played Joe 90.
  4. Once again Jim you and me are on the same wavelength.
  5. I've just listened to this on YouTube, excellent. There are quite a few of her records on YouTube ,her versions of standards are pretty good imo. I suspect she influenced Esther Phillips as i think the latter started recording later.
  6. Great version of the old Johnny Ace song.
  7. Downloading it now Don, what a great selection, right up my street musically. I must make a big effort and get to the H & G this year.
  8. Great set. Will make a big effort to get down to 99p Soul.
  9. Nice selection Rob. Thanks for posting your playlist, enables me to listen again, not always easy to take things in when talking and drinking. Well done to the Majestic guys for getting guests who play interesting and lesser known tunes. Listening as I type this to Darling Dear by the Jackson 5, normally wouldn't have bothered but as said by others a really nice tune.
  10. Thanks for posting your playlist Warren, nice selection. I liked the Los Sonidos de FM record, a nice take on Wade In The Water, one Latin record I really enjoyed. If I remember correctly you played it off a 45, is it expensive? Good to have a chat with you sitting on the edge of the stage (as usual).
  11. Listening to it now, good nighter type sounds. Can you post a tracklist please?
  12. Very nice. Thank you.
  13. Thank you for the music you gave us. RIP Deon Jackson
  14. Thanks for uploading this set, excellent stuff and also thanks for playlist. Helps to know what you're listening to and what you can't afford.
  15. Are you going to do any more of these Pete as I really enjoyed both of them? Easy to forget the roots of our music.
  16. Thanks for posting these up Chalky, it's an education listening to these podcasts. Would be good to hear some of these tunes out now.
  17. Thanks Pete for these 2 podcasts, excellent, really enjoyed them. Plenty on them that were new to me. More please!

  19. I've just had a look and subscribed. Loads of tunes I've never heard, interesting R&B, etc. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to upload. Hope you don't get any hassle.
  20. On the rare occasions I hear either side of it I just have to get up and dance, whatever I'm doing. I do hope that Butch will play this and Jean Carter at the Lifeline anniversary on Saturday. A real tragedy that these will never be available on legal issue because the only word I've got to describe them is magnificent.
  21. Martha Jean Love - That's The Way The Story Goes / Old Time Lover
  22. Butch played it at the last Lifeline, I had to ask John McClure what it was, fool that i am as I've got it on a CD. So at the November 100 Club I asked Butch about it, he told me that he'd had it for years, and if he had it in his box he'd play it. Fortunately he did, not that many on the dance floor for it, but I like to think that those of us out there showed their good taste. Kitch played it at the January Boomerang. Guess it's an acquired taste, as Ted says not that easy to dance to, but neither is United Sounds and plenty of others.
  23. Wonderful tunes here, my favourite soul music style.
  24. He was the lead singer of the Dovells who had several hits in the USA before the "British invasion", Bristol Stomp, You Can't Sit Down, Hully Gully Baby. I've got one on a CD by him on Cameo Parkway, Hearts Are Trump, which is nice but I've never heard it played out. Presume it was before 1-2-3. Just played 1-2-3 on YouTube, I'm not at home, and it took me right back to the Scene and when I was 19, loved that record, always got up for it. And does it really matter what ethnicity he is? It's the music that counts surely.
  25. Joe Johnson does a good version imo.
