  1. PS The new Frankie Knuckles LP has a great soul track on it, should I write to him to make sure he never does this again!! link
  2. Hi mate, I think you've hit the nail on your head yourself when you say that all the tunes are fresh to you as you're relatively new to the scene. For people (ahem) that have been round a little while, it gets a bit boring if you go to do's reguarly that play the same old records week in week out - basically it gets boring. My own personal view is that it's brilliant to hear progressive stuff and stuff that you don't always hear - I think it's human nature to want to listen/try new things and that's why I try and get to those sorts of do's. It doesn't have to be rare (although often the rare records are good), just different and not something that's been hammered for 20/30 years. I don't hate oldies - far from it - I personally think any DJ set needs a few records in that are fairly well known, but my personal preference is to hear new good stuff as much as possible. Having said that, again it's horses for courses - there are plenty of well attended oldies nights up and down the country and good luck to the people who attend and enjoy them do's. As I've said on another thread, live and let live, it's a broad church we live in Rich p.s bas*ard Rovers will get you....
  3. Bloody norah - this has to be the most bigoted, odious and self righteous post I've come across on this forum and I've been on here a little while now and seen a few that turn my stomach! For god's sake get a life. Have you heard yourself?? Who the hell are you to claim that everybody who dances to this stuff in rooms at soul do's has a "self congratulatory feeling of pushing boundaries" or in any way feels superior to other soulies - what a load of totally innaccurate narrow minded turd that is. Has it occurred to your Highness (for if anyone is coming across loud and clear as being superior to these mere mortals it is HRH The Dictator of Musical Terms) that these may be normal soulies that happen to like this music because it is just that - soulful???? Yes, oridinary soulies who may be partial to it. Like me. People will vote with their feet. If they do not like the music, whatever you want to call it, then they will not attend these rooms and the rooms won't last very long - if there is demand then unless I'm mistaken this is a free democratic society and people will attend. And your ridiculous comment that all people who attend these rooms and then go back into the northern room "smack of falsity" and "smack of limited knowledge and a fear of the unknown" is just laughable. Listen to yourself. If you don't like this genre then don't attend the rooms - don't try and stop other people enjoying themselves because it doesn't float your boat or in any way try and rubbish soulies who may want to try it, by you claiming it would somehow "taint" their soul credibility - as I say, let the people themselves decide. And for the record before you try and claim I'm a "dance/house" peddler, I'm first and foremost a 60s buff that also listens and plays crossover/70s and does appreciate good soulful house. I co-promote Soulsville in Leeds (with Jamie - "Soulsville" on here) and we've now got Pat Brady and John Parker as fellow residents who asked to join us, so we have to be doing something right. We don't have a "modern" room in the venue and soulful house is not played at our night as we're not massively into it. But I totally resent your bigoted thread trying to tell people what they should and shouldn't do at do's and trying to claim anyone who dances to soulful house at soul do's lacks knowledge, or feels in any way superior to the next soulie. I don't seek out Y2K nights or do's where these rooms are as I love my 60s northern, but I find your repugnant post totally nauseating. I don't know how old you are but I bet you'd have similarly labelled the newies or 70s stuff as elitist when that stuff was breaking. Christ help us if people aren't allowed to try new things. Good luck to promoters who do have the balls to do this. It's a big wide world we live in and you don't have to attend these rooms if you feel so paranoid and hostile to them. Get back in your ark and stop dictating and stereotyping other normal out and out soulies who may be partial to this form of soul music. Rich
  4. There was that life assurance ad a couple of years back that used the backing track to Sam Fletcher - I'd Think It Over (minus the vocal). That certainly pricked my ears up as I was slouched in front of the telly after a hard day's graft!! Rich
  5. Proper proper pish myself everytime I look at that - it's bloody hilarious Doesn't the woman have any family/friends to tell her she looks like she's got a TV set over each eye??!! Imagine if that was your mam!!!! I laugh out loud everytime I look at it - brilliant!! Rich
  6. I had to pull the curtains down some months ago after Jamie used them to wipe his ar$e on. Thought it wouldn't happen again if I put blinds up. Three weeks later he was in A&E... Hope your journey back yesterday wasn't too horrendous.. Rich
  7. Tobi Lark - Sweep It Out The Shed on Topper...........I'll get my coat!! Rich
  8. Not been buying much of this recently, but it IS soulful. Try Uptown Records in London too: www.uptownrecords.com They have sound clips on their website and do mail order. As someone else has said, Arnold Jarvis is great, Kenny Bobien, Kathy Brown and MAW (Masters At Work) feat India - especially "Backfired" from a few years back - blinding soul vocal Comps wise, the Hed Kandi stuff and definitely the Defected releases and comps (as a starting point the Defected comp "Soul Heaven" compiled by MAW is a good place to start - sure, some tracks have deeper beats which not everyone will like, but there's a lot of very soulful tunes on that comp). Bobbi & Steve's self titled comp on Trust The DJ also has some great soul tunes on. But don't tell the 60s only dinosaurs!! Rich
  9. 1987 was the beginning for me!!! I was a 16 year old mod!! Attended my first allnighter, which was the National Mod Meeting in Lincoln, the very weekend of the hurricanes. Thankfully we took the train and not the PX, otherwise I doubt I'd be telling this tale. I remember that weekend drinking my first pint of chinese (or whatever variation you call it, depending where you live - half bitter, half lager) and for getting kicked out of McDonalds for falling asleep the next morning!! It was a very long train journey the next day back to North Wales! Same year started doing soul do's. The Raven in Whitchurch was one of our fave nights at the time - Johnny Beggs, Pep, Roger Banks etc all used to play there - great sounds and great people. Roger's mate Geoff Whitfield who I used to buy a lot of 45s off - anyone know where he is?? Warrington lad. Anyone on here do the Raven??? Used to also do the allnighters in Whitchurch (Civic??) and the Cheshire Cat in Nantwich. Used to do all the north wales do's - North Wales soul club bashes - Chico, Mark Speakman, Phil Blacknell, Chris Fenny, Mark Bicknell etc - great great days and good guys that really got us into new sounds and not played out oldies. Also Mike's nights in Prestatyn in a pub - can't recall the name now! Really happy days - fondly remember my mate Gareth's girlfriend Sue driving us home from Prestatyn in the old red mini. Gareth was totally trashed on a diet of lager and copious amounts of vodka and orange. We stopped for him to have a wee at the side of the road. He was that pished he fell straight into a load of nettles was hilarious, although he didn't seem to think so at the time! Also used to travel a bit further afield - the Longton suite in Stoke springs to mind. Remember hearing Melba Moore - Magic Touch that Adey had just rleased at the time - blew me away - still love it to this day Also used to do the Rhythm & Soul bashes - Mace, Rob Messer etc. We were well into our tunes - even then these guys were playing Gene Toones, Jo Ann Courcy, Kell Osborne etc. Was also a guy from Loughborough who used to do the same bashes - can't remember his name. I remember him buying Silky Hargraves on Dearborn off Adey Pierce (in beautiful Dearborn sleeve - think it was £170 if memory serves me right - a lot of cash at the time!!) and playing it - fantastic! Not a bad year!!! Rich
  10. Very sad news indeed. The Drifter and Sad Thing were 2 of the very first records that gripped me, when I was getting into northern in the mid-late 80s. Gringo, you're right - his performance at Yarmouth was magic - he was in a full tuxedo - very smart and his voice dripped emotion. Yep, Eddie Parker was there (in stetson!), Garland Green (in white suit!) and also Lorraine Chandler - some line up fair play. When Ray did Drifter the place went mad, especially when the break comes in near the end and he belts out the emotion - class. Sad loss. I'll have to try and dig out the photos from that weekend - I've got them at home somewhere, framed, with the flyer and with all the autographs. RIP sir. Rich
  11. Got mine on red Royal Tone off Adey Pierce's last list for £75 Brill psych/60s garage tune on the flip!!! Rich
  12. Steve, Brett can fill you in on this record..... Rich
  13. Picked up a Roy C "Gone Gone" on German Metronome circa 1992 from a little shop in Hamburg, complete with groovy picture sleeve! Rich
  14. Hi Paul nate, I've got some old pics of him on stage at the Yarmouth weekender many moons ago, but I wouldn't say they're high resolution. Shout if you want me to dig them out... Rich
  15. GOT to be Felice Taylor - It May Be Winter Outside Rich
  16. I like the girl. Not really sure I can repeat on a "family" soul forum what I would do if I was her manager (there has to be perks!!!) but, going back on topic, would love to hear her do "Every Little Bit Hurts" - what a song Rich
  17. Nice tune - but the whole damn world is going crazy!!
  18. it all fits now John - he was eating a savoloy last friday in Leeds now you come to mention it...
  19. Aghhh - can't have been you then - maybe thinking about it, it was someone called Mikey who used to put them on - can't recall - maybe someone can help me??! Not seen the Marvelous Ray listed for a while (and I'm assuming that is the record you were on about) - it's down at £50 in Tim Brown's book, but I've not personally seen it listed for a while - maybe I've missed it. i'm sure if you whack it up in the "wants" section, someone will turn you up a copy - good luck... All the best, Rich
  20. Was 10 when Wigan closed (!!) and didn't know had been covered up, but lyrics maybe suggest Marvelous Ray "Whirlpool" on ABNER?? Chhers, Rich p.s Pete - I'm originally from Ruthin in north wales - did you used to put alldayers on in Bangor?? Pretty sure I came there a couple of times circa early 90s/late 80s, giving a certain Mr Bicknell a lift!!
  21. Yep, brilliant tune I remember Phil Blacknell playing this a lot in North Wales in late 80s/early 90s. As regards Someday The Sun... the sound on all I've heard has been dodgy and yes they are all acetate copies from 1 studio acetate (or tape - dunno Jocko). Rich
  22. Cae dy geg!!!!!!! Nah, now after 2 pints of Wrexham Lager, Brett would be on his back
  23. As you should all do - da iawn!!! And while we're on the subject at this time of year "Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Da I Bawb" thumbsup: Rich
  24. Why don't you buy that Dolly Parton 45 at the same time and give them both to your loved one as a crimbo prezzie Now those two have got good lungs on them...
  25. "Ramsbottom Rabbit" sounds like a lady wrestler !! Reg, I'll look into getting you one. You could always improvise with a handkerchief and some knicker elastic...
