Popped into town at dinnertime and instead of thumbing through 'Record Collector' like we tight northerners do I actually bought this months edition. (£3.50p gasp I can buy 3 pints and a bag of crisps in our local for that...) There's a great article called 'Salsoul the ultimate disco label' which I flicked through, I can't comment on that claim as I don't know enough about the subject. Critics might claim thats never stopped me gobbing off about a wide range of subjects before hehehe. But what did get me thinking was for such a revered seventies label like this how come so little of its releases got air play on either the northern or modern scenes of the day? Was its sound just too clubby or disco for the grim north? Once again I've let my mouth shoot off, bear in my mind my knowledge of the label is very minimal and I wasnt attending venues in the mid seventies. Did its output appeal more to the jazz funk clubs or was it strictly disco? Was it a London ting? I stand ready to be educated by those that know more than me.... derek Off the top of my head the only 2 Salsoul cuts I could think of which got major play on the northern scene were Eddie Holman's "This could be a night to remember" and Sylvetti's "Spring rain". Both were massive at Wigan and immediately make me think of fluffy white towelling socks, polyveldts, baggy trousers and immortal smell of brute (don't tell anyone but I was in Superdrug yesterday and smelt or is it smelled a bottle of Brut. It doesnt smell that bad actually but whether I'd wear it is a different matter...)

Overheard at the Greatstone recently when Keith Money was DJing as Papa Bear & Cubs "You're so fine" on SMS was played - "Butch had 30 copies of this last year and was selling them for £8, Soul Sam just paid £1200 for a copy". Whether any of these statements are true I don't know but I love this record bar grapevine gossip. This is the stuff myths & legends are made of... derek

Even though I'm UK based I always sell in dollars and always prefer dealing with overseas people via Paypal. I will accept US $ cash and UK people can pay by £ chq or $ paypal. Reason why I use paypal $ is simple, money comes into my paypal account in dollars then I buy other records from America in dollars. Job done and thats the way I want to operate. Anyway I'm currently in dispute with a European chap who won a record off me a month ago and said he couldnt pay via paypal even though my payment details stated this as my prefered option. He wanted to pay through Bidpay and send me a western union money order. I wasnt happy with this as my bank would charge me a set fee for handling and besides I'd get a lower exchange rate. I told the guy this and said he'd have to pay the additional bank charges I'd confer. Despite several reminders he's gone very quiet on this. I'm gonna have to report him to Ebay7 for non payment and leave him bad feedback. He'll probably reply saying bad things about my mother..... I don't mind really as I can relist the record on Ebay and sell it relatively easily, its a King Tut funk 45 on Future Stars. I could offer it 'second chance' but I left that particular person neutral feedback recently for taking 3 weeks to pay so he might sulk over this and not get back to me. Its all good fun but in the grand scheme of things its here nor there. derek bloody hell have just re-read my post and it makes me out to be a right obstructive pedantic so and so - er maybe I am hehehe.....

I know you mentioned this recently in a personal message to me Steve - seem to think I actually have a UK copy tucked away somewhere. Will give it a spin to remind me if I still like it or wanna flog it. I know this sounds bonkers but I can never remember what UK 45s I've got but my memory can account for each and every US 45 I've got secreted away. Guess thats where my true passion lies. derek

great record Jeff - its on the orange label and help me out here chaps isnt there a rarer pink label release which shares the same backing but has different lyrics? Something about a girls name? derek

Been following this thread with great interest - actually found a Paul Thompson issue in Memphis in the cellar of a well known record store out there early/mid 90s. Can see the place in my mind and the road its on but can't recall its name off hand. When I returned to New York several days later I went scouting for more records obviously, so I'm in this store and I reads on the back of a UK Kent LP that Ian Clarke was chasing a copy of the said 45. On getting back home I rings him up and sells him PT for £100 cash and a copy of Gwen McCrae's "All this love that I'm giving" on Cat valued £20 which I was playing constantly as I was DJing in a black club in Bradford at the time. In my warped sense of thinking then I was selling big quality expensive American finds to finance my search for cheap mainly mediocre obscurities hehehe. Its all good fun innit, derek Whats my thoughts on the rarest Volt? Mmm thats a tricky one...Does curiosity count - there's one female artist on Volt whoes got no known history absolutely nothing! Her names Ilana and I've just got a neat double sided mint WDJ copy of her "Where would you be" which is a great slice of downtempo femme soul with attitude. Voly 4064 released Aug 71. Anyway I've got the orange issue sadly only VG+ which has a flip side "Let love fill your heart". Obscure flip side from an unknown artist? Thats gotta be worth a drink hasnt it? Sadly after all that fanfare the flip side actually isnt that good - shame...oh well. derek One of the best Top 50 Volts must be the Mad Lads "Did my baby call" oh yes!

Anybody got M/Ex copies of these 2 for sale please? Creations "Just remember me" (Globe); MM & Peanuts "The Phillie" (Money). Off list replies please. derek

Return Of Bcb Radio - Derek Pearson April 2005

thanks for streaming April's show Mike - just a slight amendment part 2 of 2's show covers from the Tokays to Harold Hutton. cheers, derek -
Did anybody see that 'madona in a chapati' ebay sale at the weekend? I pissed myself laughing bet Ebay pulled it off as soon as they saw it. It was a piss take of those "I cut open a tomato and saw the face of jesus" religous nut type things the newspapers report every now and then. Well this guy (from Dewsbury, west yorks now I think about it) was trying to sell this chapti which he'd got when he bought a takeaway curry. It showed a picture of a chapati with an outrageously amateur super imposed picture of the virgin madona on it. Well fell about laughing. derek Please remember absolutely nothing is above criticism and piss taking...

Now at the risk of sounding scousist I've always wondered why Liverpool hasn't had a major impact on our soul club scene. For a major city it defined youth music culture during the sixties with the emergence of the Beatles & the Cavern Club. When punk spat its way into the late seventies 'Erics' was the place to be. 'Cream' became one of the first super clubs on the house scene throughout the nineties. On a football point of view they've got 2 major premiership teams and their followers took football hooliganism onto new levels during the eighties. So youth wise Liverpool and the merseyside area has really marked its place out on UK street culture. But why no northern scene as such within the L postcode? I mean given its close proximity to Wigan Casino (yawn) and all the big clubs in Manchester you'd have thought it would have spawned loads of venues of its own. Alright there's The Sink nowadays and I'm led to believe its been going from the sixties in one way or another. Baz Maleady and his gang ran the much respected Saints Club in St Helens throughout the 90s. But of all the books and magazines I've ever read the city gets few if any mentions. Maybe I'm reading the wrong books, maybe I'm talking shite (and thats why my breath smells) but I'd like to read other peoples thoughts on this matter. Maybe somebody from that area will post up and say I'm talking rubbish and give evidence to shoot down my ideas? derek In all my years I've never actually been to a soul cub in Liverpool the nearest has been the afore mentioned Saints and the Viaduct in Newton Le Willows. Has there been any funk clubs in Liverpool Town?

didnt check Ebay all weekend Mace and this one would've surely caught my interest. Never heard/seen one on this label before - how bizarre?! Seem to think I had a FF on Triode years ago but sold it in a 'need more obscurities so I think I'll sell some biggies' mood. Oh well... derek

finally finally after mooving house twice in the 18 months I've put some time and effort into tidying up themy LPs & 12"s over the weekend. Whilst sorting through I came across several records recently talked about on SS which I'd always meant to scan in and talk about but never did. Here's the MK 12" we were on about - its the radio midtempo mix you meant to say daved hehe.....sounds like he was on mogadon* when he did the radio ballad mix what the fu..? derek *old school drug reference sorry. Now I'm nearing middle age and desperate to be hip should I say old school or old skool? Think I'll go walk the dog before it starts raining....

Was 'round a friends house last night going through some records and there was a Sean Oliver "Me and you", "Magic" + 2 others on that Canadian Boomerang 12". I remember being told at the time that only a 1000 were pressed and I bought mine straight away. After it was overplayed on the modern scene the northern scene picked up on it and since all available copies had gone into collections the price and demand has increased dramatically. Both the vinyl and cover are in Ex condition and its up for sale at £50 obviously some might think this is a bit steep but I'm just passing the message on. So if anybodies interested ring Billy on 07802 500351. P&P extra. cheers, derek

I'm fairly certain I've asked questions about this label before but a quick check on 'search' revealed no memories. So this is how I think it was. Around the mid 70s Ian Levine was in the studio recording many songs on artists like The Exciters, Doris Jones, LJ Johnson, Tyrone Ashley & Carol Woods. He put them out the Tommorrow label (which I presume was his own) whilst shopping them around labels like 20th Century. I've a bundle of 7 of these releases, the numbering went up to 12 so there could've been more releases. In fact would like to see a label listing if anybodies got one. I bet there wouldnt have been many of these 45s made and I know some of the music sounds dated now, some might even say the music was shite on release but thats another arguement. Would like to flog them all in one go, from a historical point of view they should be worth about a fiver each, anybody wanna make me an offer. They're all Ex/M. PM off list please. P&P extra of course. Doris Jones 'He's so irreplaceable'/inst LE002 The Exciters 'Swallow your pride'/inst LE005 LJ Johnson 'Dancing on the edge of a dream/inst LE007 Doris Jones 'Stranded in the wilderness/inst LE008 The Exciters 'Heaven is where you are/inst LE009 Tyrone Ashley 'Nothing short of a miracle/inst LE010 Carol Woods 'Your face keeps haunting me/inst LE012 onwards, derek

yeah I always thought the Deletts was about £150 these days, great flip "Whats the use" which Roger Banks played at the Wilton a few weeks ago. Interesting/boring story - my copy came from the same lad that sold Bob & Fred in the infamous Keele incident many years ago. My mate got the Deletts for £8 I think and I was pestering him all the way back to Bradford for it. My offer went up £25 every 50 miles we drove home hehehe....eventually prized it out of him a few years ago for about £100 in trades, its only VG though. vinyl till I die, derek
