  1. seem to think this was the figure bandied about 'cos Soul Sam alledgedly paid that for a copy a few years ago. Traded off my copy for about £150 (I think) 12-18 months ago to a young gentleman in Europe. onwards, derek
  2. hey up blake hows it going? Tight? I can peel an orange in my pocket. Besides Miranda's a high maintenance girl friend..... derek
  3. come on guiry get your playlist posted up... derek
  4. "You got to pay the price" on Silver Fox 14 entered the Billboard R&B charts on 18 October 1969 peaked at no 9 and stayed in the charts for 12 weeks. Got to no 49 in the Billboard Pop charts as well. derek
  5. Always liked "Thoussand wonders" and don't think it ever fully achieved its potential, maybe time for a bit of a revival? Played it out occassionally 5+ years ago off the Atlantic album but it was a typical quiet album press which dampened my enthusiasm some what. Never got 'round to getting a Spanish 7" either but I sorta keep threatening to. derek of course on the album which contains the above song you get the totally totally wonderful "When you left me heartaches began".
  6. Does anybody on here shop much on GEMM https://www.gemm.com/ yes I know there's absolutely loads of records and you can search by artist and label but jesus things are expensive on there. Rarely buy anything cos I'm just a voyeur. Last bargain I got on there was Joe Perkins top deepie on Nugget for $2.50 boy did I whistle all the way to the shop with that one...... derek Is it good for selling?
  7. I don't think prices have peaked yet, collectors & DJs will continue to pay the price with alot of moaning and groaning just like we do for petrol (and cigs if you're a smoker). I think what has changed is the way people spend their money - lets say for example you spend £100 on records a month when records were cheaper you might be 4 @ £25 or 2 @ £50. Nowadays because of the increased prices you might hold off buying those so-so records you quite like and wait till a real must have comes along. Those £10-15 cheapies which you used to buy blind are now £25-30 and you can't afford to be burning off money like that. Better to sit on it a while and wait to see what floats by. Plus I think buying habits have changed simply because there isnt the volume of quality vinyl out there in good nick to be bought. At venues these days how many dealers have boxes of cheaper obscure stuff but have little in the way of quality oldies. Alright apart from Butch but he can be expensive. derek I sold 2 records through Ebay last month which I thought might have gone for a bit more (I'd checked on popsike for previous auction results). Syl Johnson red Special Agent £250 and Carol & Gerri MGM dj £200 both mint and the bidders weren't falling over themselves for them. Yes I did have a high reserve on both of them maybe that frightened some people off I don't know? Think I'd missed the boat pricewise with C&G as it was more in demand last year or so.
  8. aint that such a great record if it was rare everybody would be chasing it - presume you've got it on the funky blue vinyl Silver Fox white demo which is pretty damn neat! Would be interested to know what 5 releases you've got. cheers, derek must check the Billboard Top 100 book when I get home to see if she ever hit the charts with it (be it pop or RnB) they must have had great faith in the song to release it several times.
  9. You two can be so cruel you know how sensitive I can be.....as soon as Ian O'Benga gives me a copy of the radio show on CD I'll send a copy onto Mister Hughes for possible streaming on here. Here's what I played - Claude Huey "Drifting" MIOB; Superlatives "Don't let true love die" Westbound; Creations "Just remember me" Globe; Sylvia Thomas "At last" Bamboo; New Yorkers "Don't wanna be your fool" Tac Ful; Soul Notes "Don't make me beg" Way Out; Precisions "What I want" Drew; Notations "New day" Twinight; Buddy Connor "When you're alone" Breakthrough. I'm sure Mister Howard will add on his plays as well. Once again it was good fun on ALL fm 96.9 DP late? surely you jest - I over estimate how quick I work and under estimate how long things will take. Together thats a dangerous situation. No wonder I'm forever plate spinning hehehe. onwards, derek

Think its in the £200-250 bracket isnt it? Ooops havent got the guides to hand. Off list please. P&P extra. cheers, derek might consider decent trades...
  13. I'm going into the studio tonight to pre-record the show and if I get time tommorrow I'll post up the playlist. Phew its all go said the Thunderbirds. Bradford's community radio BCB Radio 96.7FM Saturday 17 Sept 8-10pm. 2 hour rare soul session. All styles, all era's, all over the place blah blah blah World Web Web people can listen to the show via the real audio live stream - listen on www.bcb.yorks.com Those living within a 10-15 mile radius of the transmitter can hopefully listen direct on 96.7FM. I'll be playing 45rpm records off chunky black vinyl sorry not got any LPs with me this time. Loads of friends and venues will be getting a mention as usual. Lets go get 'em, derek
  14. Must confess I loved looking at the photos of the old buildings in Detroit which housed labels and studios throughout the sixties and seventies. Found them on the Soulful Detroit website (sorry aint got address to hand). Anyway whilst researching some old Chicago labels I stumbled across this mod site in Chicago https://www.modchicago.com - under their archive section you'll find 'Record Row: Soul in Chicago 1200-2600 S Michigan Ave, Chicago'. A fascinating read which has some good photos of how the buildings look today. derek
  15. Anybody want this 45 in Ex condition? The Squires "Don't accuse me" Gee 1082 WDJ copy £100 P&P extra. UK chq OK. Off list replies. thanks, derek
  16. great great record so good I had to say it twice. Seen a few other things by them on this label but they weren't to my taste. Can't recall last time I saw/heard of "Just an illusion" for sale. derek
  17. oooh you can be very hurtful Mister Gareth (laughs). Listened to this on Manships site after seeing an orig studio acetate in Tim Ash's sales box at Keele last week. Er Mmmm? Here's what it says on JM's auction and bear in mind he is trying to sell it Al McCarther - His True Love For You - Two Guitars A truly gasp-inducing 45. You'll have to click this sound bite more than once. In one week Al McCarther has become my favourite record! It's appeared on Island & Popcorn wants list for an age. I know of no Northern Soul DJs or collectors who own a copy, that's why it's not blown this scene apart long before now. A truly different and awesome potential MONSTER and so incredibly RARE! hands up if you like collecting vinyl, derek
  18. After the recent verbal tussles over whether Ivy Jo's "Feel the pain" could/should be played blah blah blah I started to think of records which have had plays in the past but seldom get aired nowadays. I'm not talking seventies dancers here which have had their time and would sound so ridiculously dated in 2005. I'm talking straight forward northern tunes like: International GTOs "I love my baby" (Rojac); Bessie Banks "I cant make it anymore" (Verve); The Ambers "I love you baby" (Verve). When did you last hear (or play if you're a DJ) any of the above out in a club? Has their time passed and they just don't sound right for today? You tell me. derek Confession: I've got all 3 records and havent played them out in years, have carried them in the box and always meant to play them but never did. You see I'm just as bad as everyone else hehehe
  19. reminded Tim Ash of this incident last night at Keele. Just shows what sort of brain/memory I have when I can recall details like this but forget my mums birthday. And yeah the record aint that good, sold it because I realised I was only foolishly keeping it because thats what a collector should do. Mmmm? derek
  20. Ivy Jo "I can feel the pain" VIP 25063 released 1970 Is this one of those records that is good but just not good enough for mass acceptance? He's got a decent voice riding on a thundering rhythm, good song as well. It ticks the rarity box as its a steady £100 sound and quite tricky to locate. I've played it a few times over the years - lets just say the reaction was between cool and cold. However good old Paul Johnson from Bolton played it in his set at Lowton recently to a decent response. What does the forum think - could it go if more DJs got behind it or is it just anothers decent collectors sound? always curious, derek Isnt there suppoused to be an album of his sitting in the motown vaults? Don't believe what it says on the label.
  21. hey up trev - is this the right title or a tape swoppers/cover up thing? I ask because there's a Detroit 45 on Karen/Carla that has that song title. Just can't recall the chaps name off hand (Ray ?), I do recall Tim Ashibende buying it off me for £30 at the 100 Club mid/late 90s I think maybe... derek
  22. All original US 45s in Ex nick unless stated. P&P extra. UK chq or Paypal is fine. Off list replies please. Trades might be considered. The Vipers "Little miss sweetness" (Duchess) £25; Vicki Anderson "Wide awake in a dream" (Deluxe) £35; Ike Noble "Its bad" (Alley) £35; J.J. Daniels "Mr Lonesome" (Sureshot) DJ £35; Charles Perry "How can I" (MGM) DJ £20; Minzi Berry "I don't want you no more" (Score) £50; Masqueraders "I aint gonna stop" (AGP) WDJ £40; King George "I'm gonna be somebody" (RCA) £20; Joe Moore "I aint" (Verve) DJ £30; Etta James "Seven day fool" (Argo) £40; Ron Kenoly "Moving on" (Audio Arts) £35 slight edge warp; Tommy Hunt "I'll make you happy" (Capitol) £20; Crystal Motion "You're my main squeeze" (Sound Gems) £30; Jimmy Burns "I really love you" (UK Grapevine) Ex- £15; Billy Hambric "She said goodbye/I found" (UK Grapevine) Ex- £15. cheers, derek
  23. Got this email from Haim Kenig recently and thought I'd post it up here as Mister Kilic's name has cropped up on here several times before. "Sorry to write on a negative note, but I feel I need to share this info. Haluk Kilic Stockholm, Sweden ebay ID: crane885 This is the guy who destroyed my Paypal account (and, in turn, my wife's account), and I am now convinced that he ripped me off for the 45 that I sold him as well. Several people have now told me that he is known for ripping people off in record deals. I cannot prove 100% that he received his 45 from me before he went ahead and got his money back via Paypal, but it's pretty obvious that that's the case at this point. If anybody sees or hears him playing out this 45 then I guess I can prove it 100%: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=4726725705 (I re-added the scans/soundclips, the 45 is (no artist)/Maxwell - Radiation Funk/A New Star on Maxwell 130) He started the chargeback only 2 WEEKS after I shipped it, just a little suspicious, wouldn't you say? He has not replied to any of my emails for six weeks at this point. His ebay feedback is private, loaded with negatives, and thankfully he was suspended from ebay, but he may be back at some point, I don't want anybody else to get robbed by this lowlife. If it was not for the actions of this guy, I would still be taking Paypal and probably listing some stuff on eBay, so it really has been a serious problem for both myself and many of my customers. I recently appealed the dispute to Paypal, so there is a slight chance they will refund my money (I had to pay them $210.50 to avoid collections/bad credit after they made my account negative in that amount), but I am not counting on it considering how they have acted so far. Either way, look out for this guy, he seems to be a total crook!! Best wishes, Haim
  24. The following are for sale - Celest Hardie "You're gone" Reynolds £350 Ex-; Tony Mathews "My wish" Convoy £300 Ex. P&P extra. Prefer UK buyers to pay by chq. Overseas buyers paypal is fine. Off list replies please. derek will send scans if requested
  25. As I approach my late 40s (ie nearly 50 phew!) I often reflect about my time in the mid to late 70s. As I approached my twentieth birthday in 1977 why did I choose northern over punk? I hung out in town with a wide variety of nutballs so I could have gone either way. Now I live in Stockport I'm desperate to be educated more about the musical history of Manchester, so it was with great pleasure that I went along to the 'Punk Sex Seditionaries & the Sex Pistols' exhibition at the Urbis in Manchester last week. Absolutely fascinating spent 2 hours there but should have spent 3 or 4. Fascinating facts I learnt - The Buzzcocks played at the Mayflower Club, Birch st, Belle Vue. Thats just 'round the corner from me will have to check the area out. (The punk festival was held at the famous 100 club in London Sept 76. Already knew this and have seen pictures in Record Collector. Not even the wallpapers changed hehehe). In March 76 they tried to book the Sex Pistols to play at the Commerical Hotel in Staylbridge (eh?) But the most interesting bit was that in November 77 the police banned The Buzzcocks from playing at Wigan Casino. I remember hearing about clashes between local punks and soulies from out of town on the way up from the train station. That same month the Damned played at the Elizabethan Hall in Gorton! Anyway for anybody interested in punk fanzines from this era there's an evening discussion about them on Thurs 18 Aug 6.30-8pm @ the Urbis (check www.urbis.org.uk for more details). I'll be the one sat at the front hehe derek If you've been following the 'Calling Dave McCadden' thread this is what he says inspired him to start his first fanzine - "There wasn't a 'Northern Soul' mag as such at the time so, inspired by punk mags like 'Sniffin' Glue', I wrote the 1st issue of 'Soul Time' in 1976". To quote from Kegsy "If I knew I was gonna live this long I'd have taken better care of myself"
