  5. Thanks for mentioning this reggae sales side thread as for the last couple o' years I always kept meaning to see if there had been an update on this subject but kept forgetting.....(doh) At the time I joined the Pama forum to keep up to date with it as even I had been bubbled by this mystery bidder on several reggae 45s I was selling via Ebay (bear in mind none them I had were particularly rare, desireable or even expensive) all sub £15 stuff in excellent condition. Seem to recall at the time some inventive person had knocked up a cartoon sketch type thing and posted it on Youtube. I'm sure Pete will know far more about this subject than me - so it all stopped 4 years ago? That's good. Dx
  6. Thanks for the input Ted. But I fear we are no closer to identifying this mysterious tune now than we were when this thread first surfaced in early May. I'm sure we'll get there in the end. Dx Used to have Oliver Joy on Big Deal years ago but not now (with a nod to Rob's shop).

  8. The Whispers "Remember Me" (Soul Clock SC 109) shares exactly the same backing as The Fuller Brothers "Time's A Wasting" also released on Soul Clock but a few numbers earlier SC 105. Had completely forgotten that The Whispers "Remember Me" was also released on the same catalogue number as The Whispers with the shorter title of "Remember". Reasons unknown. Derek The Fuller Brothers (Soul Clock SC 105) released April 1969. The Whispers (Soul Clock SC 109) released October 1969.

  11. Despite going slightly off topic sometimes in this thread I'm really pleased just how many knowledgeable people have got involved in trying to identify this weird and wonderfull track - but nobodys nailed it yet. With time we'll get there I'm sure. Dx
  12. Ya know what Gilly I'd never had you down as an obsessive before....... Dx I remember years ago just as I was starting to get deeper and deeper into records a well known collector (who was a couple o' years older than me) said to me "Ya know I realised I had a problem with records when I had the west coast demo, the west coast issue, the east coast demo and the east coast issue of the same record"..... I was deeply impressed and wished I would have said "You say that as though it's a bad thing".
  13. Fairly certain I first heard this comment sometime late seventies and then every other 5 years or so thereafter.... Dx
  14. Heard it described in the past as “bone crunching” or even better “with a voice that can cut wood”. Ladies and Gentlemen I have great pleasure in offering for sale this rather excellent southern growler grits an’ all. BUD HARPER “Wherever You Were” (Peacock 1932) Excellent condition £250. SOLD I’ll pay the postage UK Special Delivery or International Tracked & Signed as a thank you if payment is sent via a UK Bank Transfer or through Paypal as F&F. 15. Just to clarify matters - it was the person who initially asked the question (on another website) that described it as 'John Peel's unknown soul record from 1975' - whether it is soul, rock or blues isn't really the question - the question is who is the artist? I'm assuming JP played said track during one of his shows circa 1975 and just simply never voiced who the artist was. I don't think the initial thread was one of those where somebody knows who the artist is but sets up a nameless audio clip online as a bit of fun - a puzzle - to see who can correctly name the artist. To be honest the track in question whatever it's called doesn't do much for me at all (it's not gone onto my wants list put it that way) and I'm slightly surprised with all the combined depth of knowledge on this forum that nobodies nailed it yet. It's just a matter of time me thinks. Derek

  17. Yep good buy there Mister Julian. meant to reply to this earlier but you've answered yourself now. I've got a yellow issue and the deadwax - scratched in - reads the same as yours. Never realised "King For A Day" (on the flip side) was the official A side with deadwax scratchings RK3M-1826-1 Also there's something that looks like an I stamped in both sides. Derek
  18. Given the vast combined amount of knowledge contained within the members on this forum can anyone identify this record? It's not me that wants to know - I spotted this request online earlier and felt like being helpful. Dx Quote unquote "John Peel playing an unknown soul record, broadcast in 1975 on BBC Radio One. Does anyone know who the artist is and the title"?
  19. Hey up Dean - how's it going? On reading through the background info to the release I think the answer is no it wasn't released previously on a 45. Info lifted from the Sticky records website www.stickyrecords.org Wasn't it a lad called Peter who used to work for you on a Saturday in the Expansion shop in Manchester (the first one that was behind Victoria station) that set up the label Sticky Records on finishing University in Manchester and returning back home? Dx The BLACK PEPPER 45 Information on the band and the track is very scant indeed. It does not appear to have been released around the time of recording (admittedly I am guessing when I say late 60s, it could be anytime up to mid 70s) the track only first surfaced on a very small manufacture run from an independent Californian based record label on a 12" in 1991. The same track was on both sides and it just looked, sounded & was of a length which said this should really be a 7 inch. The track is written, produced and arranged by Roger Hatcher, a man born in 1940s Alabama, who came from a family steeped in soulful heritage. His cousin was Edwin Starr and his brother was the soulful legend Willie Hatcher, both siblings have been responsible for numerous notable additions to the recorded world of Soul music as: writers, producers, managers, arrangers and so much more. Will continues to be engrossed in music and is currently involved in and formulating many soulful projects. Roger, sadly passed away relatively recently and it is through contact with Will Hatcher that Sticky Records was able to secure the rights to make this soulful gem available again on vinyl and on that beloved of formats - the 45. Details about the session and the master tapes have not been located (if any still exist!), the label is no longer in business. I can only guess when I say that this may have been a part finished project (Black Pepper only appear to have recorded this single song) intended for release at the time but for whatever reason, shelved and then stumbled across at a later date with astonishment. There is also the chance that the release could have been hampered by the lyrical content as it may not have been seen as appropriate by the conservative radio of the time. This is not the most common of topics for a soul side, we don't have wails and tales of heartbreak, infidelity and separation or indeed political comment or just plain joy, she vocalises a complaint in no uncertain terms about how her man has ran out of gas (again) when she plainly needs more! She puts her side of the story across concisely. "You ought to see a Doctor and see what's wrong"! Tough. I also haven't even been able to find the name of the female vocalist as she is uncredited - But what a voice. WHAT A VOICE - and indeed what a band. So, not much of a story to offer, any contributions would be most appreciated, but for now we can let the music speak for itself. First ever 45 worldwide release - Don't miss this one.
  20. Many times over the years whilst talking to lads a bit older than me the name of this club (The L'Ambassador) kept cropping up and because I'm interested in that sort of thing I always enquired further. Frequently I was told "Oh it was in a cellar in a big house up near the University" (as already mentioned by Kegsy). Well I worked at the University for well over 30 years and (I'd never added 2 and 2 together or joined up the jots or whatever) I'd never figured out exactly where this club was - doh - untill now. The L'Ambassador club later morphed into The Champagne-a-Go Go club (dates unknown) and was still owned by the same dodgy geezer. So after all these years of walking past this club every other dinnertime I'd never realised this was where the L'Ambassador club was. And because I'm interested in that sort of thing I let google search do all the walking and came up with these pictures lifted from an estate agents website circa early 2017. In recent years the building had become a restaurant called China Wings with a Sisha loungue downstairs but had been closed down by the authorities due to breaking numerous food/hygene regulations. The downstairs Sisha lounge would have been where the seating area/dance floor area was as previously mentioned by Kegsy. I know the pictures aren't up to much and they don't tell a thousand stories but that's all I could find after spending an hour or so online when I should have been doing far more important jobs hahaha. 24. These hand made 'Original Peter' record bags fall into the 'very expensive option' I'm afaid. But they're probably the best looking, best made record bags I've ever had the pleasure to see. If I was wealthy I'd have one of each but I'm not. Derek https://www.originalpeter.com/index.html
  25. CalvinLee had a copy for sale sometime last month. Check sales forum. Derek
