Just re-checked Dave Rimmer's site to double check my facts. The song I posted up is listed there as a 1964 release but under a different artists name. Mmm the plot thickens. Will post up a label scan end of the week. onwards, derek

I've got literally hundreds & hundreds of photos taken at various clubs over the last (nearly) 30 years and slowly but surely I'm working my way through them when time and motivation allows. Used to DJ every now and then at Jinxy's do's at Rudies and took loads of pics there as well. When I post them up the fun bit is trying to see if you might just be one of those (unknown to me) strangers in the background wandering by. cheers, derek

For a bit of fun - what do you think of this? Anybody out there identify this 45? (I remembered that I included this track on a CD I mailed out to several people last year so those that have got this CD are barred from entering - laughs!) Its dead slow but very atmospheric, think early/mid 60s New York beat ballads ala Ray Pollard, Chuck Jackson, Lou Johnson etc (well maybe sort of). The plot thickens because the singer shares the same name as another famous soul star, whether its the same bloke I'm not so sure? Plus its on a known label however when I checked the label listing a different release was asigned to this number. How bizarre. Not seen another copy on my travels but I aint pestered dealers for it either. Must be pretty obscure but as to rarity who knows? Label scan not included obviously hehehe. Its all good fun, derek Grass.mp3 And no it's not for sale and I haven't got a few spares tucked away either just in case you were thinking......

Now I've mastered the art of making mp3's there's no stopping me now. Here's 3 tunes for sale - prefer cash/Paypal but I might trade, let me know what you got. P&P extra. Jackie Milton "Little by little/ same (De-Vel) DJ Ex £35. She had 2 releases on this label, the other is OK, this is the little known jewel she hides away. Sultry summery 1973 shuffler. Jackie_Milton.mp3 George Perkins "I'm so glad you're mine" (Royal Shield) Ex £35. Simply superb timeless soul. George_Perkins.mp3 Jimmy Richards "I'm not responsible" (A&M) DJ VG++ £25. Think he had 3 releases on this label and this is the best one. Walking pace and breath takingly soulful. Jimmy_Richards_mp3.mp3 Email me off list if interested - D.Pearson@bradford.ac.uk cheers, derek

4 Hollidays on Master 3001 "Deep down in my heart/He can't love you". Based at 8325 Joy Road in Detroit, Michigan. Joy Road eh - there must be a joke in there somewhere? What a great midpace group harmony thing - a collectors dream - must be pretty obscure as well. The Soul Harmony book dates it as a 1961 release, Mmm I dunno about that it sounds a bit later - but you can certainly hear that embryonic Detroit sound we all love so much taking shape. Burping sax, tinkling piano its all in there. In this period the group consisted of Jimmy Ruffin, Jimmy Holiday + unknown members, Jimmy Holiday co-wrote the song as well. The group later went onto record for Golden World, Revilot, Groove City etc. Manship Guide says £250, Tim Brown reckons £300. Derek says I like it. Four_Holidays_1.9MB_mp3.mp3

When I initially uploaded alot of these photos I didn't include any captions with them and I always sorta meant to get 'round to it. But I never did. When Stafford's Top Of The World closed its doors for the last time the gap was filled straight away by all-nighters 2 miles away at Stafford WMC. Sat down at the table left to right: Me with trusty red sales box by my side. Just realised now I was wearing one of my favourite blue shirts. Aah I wonder what happened to that? Bet I could still wear it at a push. Buttons-a- bulging maybe. Then there's Kyle sporting his 'just done that day' new short hair cut courtesy of Christine I imagine. Crouched over thumbing through the records is the boyish looking Carl Fortnum who moments earlier heard me saying "You need those records Carl you do. You know they're awesome. I'll knock you summat off and do you a good deal. Trust me". Sat down, thinking about what he had for tea, is that man from Brighouse - Craig Butler looking equally boyish. He's nonchalont. He's cool. He's reading what looks like is a copy of my old fanzine which I'm fairly certain he still hasn't paid for. And he still wears that blue top. And he's still got that moustache. -

By the time the eighties came around we were well used to stopping out after midnight. Like gypsies in the night when Wigan shut we simply moved on. Wherever loud music was played late into the night we'd turn up. When 'Top of the World' closed its doors, a local working mens club opened its arms. I say is that Geoff Buckley from Burnley centre bottom white tee shirt & beard? seated round the table L-R: me still with moustache; Kyle (who I'd hung about with since Wigan days late 70s. As my photo album evolves expect to see his face crop up at regular intervals); a young Carl Fortnum deciding which 45s to buy out of my bargain sales box; an even younger Craig Butler reading a copy of "Shades" if I'm not mistaken. Facial hair for men hadn't been outlawed by the fashion police by then. derek
