  1. In 1987 James Hendricks operating out of Nashville, Tennessee released an album on Carrie entitled 'Sounds Of The Sixties'. Featuring 11 tracks it included 2 from Clifford Binns "Who told you" and "I'm human too". Have these 2 cuts been released anywhere else? Checked the recent LaBeat CD from Grapevine but there's no mention. Copies of this album came into the UK and were sold through lists quite cheaply, seem to think they were all in plain white card sleeves (like my copy is). Haven't seen a copy for sale in years. "Who told you" is a great slice of moody empty Detroitness whilst "I'm human too" is quite nice in a bouncy kind of way. onwards, derek
  2. Tha man that I am - ohio players - capitol album track 12216 refosoul
  3. Seem to think it was Paul Johnson from Bolton that siddled up to me at an all-nighter sometime in the nineties and said "You need this Derek" and handed me an Ohio Players album. It was taken home on approval and played several times. I convinced myself it was a monster in the making, a sorta cross between Ann Sexton "Gone too long" and some thing else I've forgotten. Came across it again last week and Mmmm isn't it amazing how the passage of time damps down your excitement levels. Then it was awesome now it's only average. Ohio Players "The man that I am" found on the Capitol album 'The Ohio Players' (SM-11291), the one with green, red and black zig zag stripes on the front cover. Previously released as 'Observations in time' (ST-192). Damn does that mean I've got a re-issue! Oh the shame of it...... derek Think PJ charged me £8 for it
  4. A well known record dealer who's already been mentioned in this thread has a copy of this album for sale at £75. derek
  5. Aint got no love - van mccoy - sss album 12011 refosoul
  6. Just another dress rehearsal - van mccoy - sss album only 12010 refosoul Chris Bartley on vocals?
  7. I seem to think I've rambled on about this weird album many times over the last few years on here. And now with the inclusion of sound clips we can discuss it further. But first check the dreadful front cover - oh dear Released in 1976 on the Shelby Singleton owned SSS label out of Nashville, Tennessee. Featuring 10 tracks sadly most of them are instrumentals but not of the expected disco kind more like completely forgetable fillers. Strange? But tucked quietly away are some decent vocal tracks, the best being the gorgeous "Just another dress rehearsal". Despite the album's cosy title none of Van's friends even get a credit or mention anywhere. See informative rear cover - dig those boots I've always been lead to believe it's Chris Bartley singing away on the two above named vocal cuts, whether I've just been repeating parrot fashion what I've been told or read I don't know, but on "Just another dress rehearsal" even with my cloth ears that does sound just like Chris. Also my fog of a memory tells me this cut was or has been played covered up many years ago on the northern scene - anybody confirm? Just to be different my copy is on Australian SSS - same as Bri Pinch's copy And I agree with Andy's suggestion that it was probably a "cash in" release that was suppoused to ride in on the back of "The Hustle" which was massive a year earlier. Looks like it didn't. John Manship currently has on auction an acetate by the Van McCoy Strings performing the - stupendous unissued - instrumental "Dress rehersal". I'm unable to play the soundclips on John's site so cannot comment - is it simply the instrumental to the vocal version contained on this SSS album? I suspect Simon Soussan would have beefed up the instrumental wouldn't he? Can anybody compare and confirm? It's all good fun, derek If I get time/chance I'll try post up the other 2 tracks as favoured by Andy and Bri.
  8. hey up Chris how's it going? Both records have sold so it's been a good day all round. onwards, derek

Struth I should wear a suit and work in advertising. Anybody ever seen an article or discog on Mister Wade? He's been quite a prolific artist over the years and has delivered some killer tunes along the way.

Another trade out of Angus from Barnsley's box at the Wilton on Friday 17th November. In fact he told me that I'd traded/sold him this record sometime last year at the Greatstone and now it's come back to me. How bizarre?
  17. Got you on my mind - joe hinton - backbeat 11727 refosoul what a great record indeed - has been discussed on site recently as one of those sounds which everybody seems to like but it's just never really taken off on the dancefloor. Probably through not enough DJ's playing it! Have seen a few copies for sale recently at £75 here's a minter for £40. Another Pearson fair deal...... Actually heard it played at the Wilton on Friday 17th November to a good reception. Thanks to Angus from Barnsley for the trade.

  21. At last - sylvia thomas - bamboo 11641 refosoul
  22. Oh you sweet darling - the equations - all platinum 11640 refosoul
  23. Thats the reason - buster benton - melloway 11638 refosoul rare local release before Twinight got their hands on it
  24. Right if I've understood it properley I have to start off a new topic and then - because at the moment you can only add refoclips into a reply - I have to reply to myself so I can tag in a sound clip. All these are for sale: All are Ex. P&P extra. UK chq or Paypal with 4%. Buster Benton "Thats the reason" (Melloway) serious deep soul indeed, rare local release before Twinight picked it up. Flip "Hole in my head" is RnB. £25 Reduced down to £20 The Equations "Oh you sweet darling" (All Platinum) nice ballad with just enough movement to keep it interesting. Quite a hard number, same group who also cut for Dakar. £20 SOLD Sylvia Thomas "At last" (Bamboo) Catchy midpace finger snapper as Roger would say. Unusuakl plain green design and the opening shot on this label more famous for the Voicemasters releases. £20 SOLD JJ Jackson "It seems like I've been here before" (Calla) double sided demo. Overlooked yet dramatic big voiced beat ballad jobbie. £15 Fern Kinney "Sweet devil" (Atlantic) WDJ. Quirky yet very distinctive dancer rumoured to have been played covered up a few years ago. Ms Kinney along with Dorothy Moore was previously in the Poppies ("Pain in my heart") on Epic. This was her first solo 45 released 27 March 1968 so the date stamp reckons. The flip "Your love's not reliable" features on several southern soul CDs but strangely it does nothing for my ears. £20. SOLD Offers considered if it aint sold. PM or email D.Pearson@bradford.ac.uk cheers, derek
  25. Don't be ashamed to cry - lil willie west - frisco 11632 refosoul here's this rather saucy little number from the city they call New Orleans. It's mean it's moody, it's big and it's bold. Some might say it's an awesome example of a sixties beat ballad. Whatever I just love those drum rolls. onwards, derek yes/no? hit or miss? What do ya think? I suspect it's the same geezer who cut for Deesu etc, probably his first release hence the lil prefix - I knew I should've been in the police force.....
