  1. Great choice Simon which I fully agree with. Two great DJs and both from the same town would you believe, what's the chances of that I wonder? Stoke on Trent seems to be a place that bypasses the national spotlight yet produces these two great tastemakers. Imagine how big the pile of records would be if you added up together all the records that have been through their collective hands. derek
  2. Hi Sebastian - did the DVD arrive? What did you think of it? cheers, derek Depending on your review I was sorta waiting to decide whether to buy a copy.....
  3. reduced it down to £35 to try an' encourage it to leave home... derek
  4. Fear not Olof I sold it a few days ago. Forgot to update the post. derek
  5. First went to Chicago in the summer of 1992 armed with a big bundle of dollars and a head full of record facts. Carl Fortnum had already told me about this old TV/Radio shop somewhere down the South Side. He recounted tales of a young man bringing him boxes and boxes of old dusty 45s up from the damp cellar. Carl provided his incentive by tipping him a few dollars for every box he surfaced. On entering the ground floor behind a counter attatched to the wall was some old style record racking (think Post Office letter sorting racks) littered with dusty 45s. My excitement was short lived as it contained gospel nothing but gospel releases m'lud. After some conversation I soon realised the young lad working in the shop turned out to be the very same person Carl had met the year previously. After initially carrying some boxes up the cellar stairs he soon tired and I talked my way underground. The smell of heavy dampness was refreshing cool comparing to the sun upstairs. He fixed up a lamp rig and the hunt began. Obviously the old stock had been handled many many times before but nothing ventured an' all that. Several hours later I'd searched, hunted and touched every damn record down in that pit. I didn't find any expensive Northern rarities but came away with a big bundle of soul 45s for the old collection back home. derek Being the obsessive that I am I wrote down every record purchased from every store, every person, from every trip to America without fail. And I rarely throw anything away so if I find these files in the near future I'll add a brief list of what came out of Wilson's cellar.
  6. Hey up Mal good idea for a thread. Apologies for not keeping in contact re articles/interiews as much as I should have recently. Actually last week I started gathering some of my photos together from previous American record hunting trips with a view to making a photo album on here. I've scanned dozens into my PC at home and hopefully will begin to upload them over the weekend. onwards, derek
  7. From Seano (Banbury) 4 March 2007. Scarily I kept loads of the bags from record shops over the years, especially the 7" but of course increasingly scarce! Plenty of paper ones, just don't get at all any more. And even worse than that, I got a few of those plastic folders you find in WH Smiths with see-through pockets to keep them all in! Just might upload a photo someday to jog some memories.

It was counterfeited in green vinyl in 1977 by the legendary bootlegger Bob Catteneo, only one hundred copies were made making them quite a desirable item. The same chap also made the gorgeous looking multi coloured vinyl copies around the same time in much smaller quantities. Exact number unknown. derek See Popsike for details of a green vinyl copy which sold through Ebay in August 2004 for ¡£108.

Is this just one of the coolest looking bootlegs you've ever seen? Nice! Wouldn't mind a copy. However the one that sold through John Manship on auction in the summer of 2004 went for at least ¡£200+ or maybe more (it was at ¡£204 the last time I saw it - phew!) derek It was also counterfeited in green vinyl in 1977 by the legendary bootlegger Bob Catteneo, only one hundred copies were made making them quite a desirable item.

Smokey in Halifax in 1983 would you believe it eh? Still got a Tee shirt from that night! See ticket stub in different image.

A few months ago whilst browsing various soul related sites on the web I came across an article describing growing up in London as a soul boy during the seventies. The author talked fondly about a record store where he spent many Saturday mornings buying newly released vinyl. He asked if anybody still had one of the plastic carrier bags the shop gave you to cart home all your new buys in. What a weirdo I thought - fancy somebody wanting an old carrier bag? Mmmm thats just the sort of thing I'd do! A few weeks later we went to an audio jumble/record fair in an old church hall and in amongst old blokes dressed in nylon jackets with bad facial hair I chanced upon an old Woods Music Shop paper bag sandwiched between some bad rock albums. I used to buy all the Grapevine 45s as new releases from this shop (circa 1979) and being the smart cookie I am - I didn't want to waste my money - I only bought the one copy of Nabay and Lester Tipton. Records in paper bags - how quaint and old fashioned does that sound these days. onwards, derek Woods Music Shop with branches in Sunbridge Road Bradford, Huddersfield and Wakefield.....

Came across a bundle of these old bits n bats at the weekend- Southend WMC - this followed on from when Stafford TOTW finished, posted up some pictures last year or so. Kool Kat & Top Dog Gents 1987 - which clubs were they running? The Peacock in Yeadon, Leeds up by the airport. Think it ran Wednesday nights and as I was at college in Leeds till 7.30 that night I often used to call in for a couple of drinks on my way home. Was driving a motorbike at the time and do recall turning up there one rainy night dressed in waterproofs. As I got to the door they said "You do know its a soul night don't ya". Dave Bywell read and weep. Major Lance in 1982-that must've been at Hinkley Leisure Centre, got some pics somewhere. Smokey in Halifax in 1983 would you believe it eh? Still got a Tee shirt from that night! (later found and added flyer from this event - see seperate photo) Carlisle 1995 dates - the mid 90s were for our gang what you might describe as 'hectic and adventurous'. The roads north were littered with incidents which still cause us to chuckle to this very day. onwards, derek

Here's a letter that was sent out to new members on joining the newly formed Inter-Soul Club (North). Date unknown but it should be quite easy to work out (Bankhall Miners; Morecambe). derek

Disclaimer: I wish to make it clear beyond any doubt none of these patches have ever been sown onto any bags, jackets, trousers, vests or any similar items of clothing that I have worn either in public or private. derek Anybody making allegations that I've exhibited any form of badges in public will be met with the full force of the law. Seem to think this was a promotional matchbook given away, handed out to promote the song "This weekend" off her 1996 album 'I'm here for you'. Don't quote me on this though....... derek
  18. From the album: memorabilia, record stores and stuff

Ray Charles "I don't need no Doctor" Cool Picture Sleeve me thinks - Dutch Artone I believe. From the day I got this I always thought this was a pretty cool sleeve - that silhouette of Ray would super impose well onto a flyer or whatever. derek I'd forgotten it was the team of Ashford, Simpson & Armstead that had written "I don't need no doctor" which makes references to his alleged (coughs) drug habit at the time.
  19. Trev Cox to the rescue please..... What sorta years are we looking at regarding the soul nights you used to run there? Recall going once/a few times I think? Just through the entrance door was a pool table and I remember Rod Dearlove setting out all his sales boxes on it. Blake were you there as well? onwards, derek
