Here's an old clipping from Black Echoes which listed Richard Searling's Wigan Casino main room Top 52 plays dated 22 September 1979. Top Tip: don't read through this list of 52 mainly cover-up titles and attempt to name the actual records. If you do - the next thing you'll realise its 3am in the morning hahaha. derek -

Think I went to this old Washington DC record shop in 1990 and actually found a trashed Cautions Shrine 45 on the counter by the door. Shop Owner gave me this car sticker on leaving. derek And years later I think I traded the above Cautions record to Alan Coney at a Bishop Auckland soul night in the mid 1990's for summat like £15. Talk about having a memory for useless trivia hahaha..... -

Whilst hunting for old vinyl throughout dark and dusty places across America, I ocassionally used to find old original cardboard boxes in which records were packed and sent from the pressing plants to the distributors. Every now and then I found some with a fascinating history and a story to tell I'll bet. Of course I couldn't help but acquiring some of these old mailing labels. From Michigan to Illinois. derek -

Absolutely no idea where I acquired this old paper sleeve from? It would be nice if any soul sourcers could chip in with some more details. derek -

Having entered this world in 1957 I was obviously too young to have attended this hallowed Manchester club. Seem to think we were given these original membership cards on entering all-nighters at the club run by Tim Ashibende in the late 1980's? derek Addition by DP 4/12/10: If you check the image titled 'Manchester Tickets' you'll see a ticket for a club called Placemate 7 (which was previously known as The Twisted Wheel) advertising a Bank Holiday Allnighter on Sunday 24th August 1986. And as the snow fell the picture became clear. -

On Saturday 4th April 1981 it would cost you the grand sum of £2 to enter and walk up those stairs. Here's a 50p off voucher which might seem absolutely laughable these days to anybody in their twenties. But it knocked a quarter off the price which is equivalent to £2.50p off a tenners admission into a current all-nighter these days. 50p off - result! derek Thank you K. -

Hard Times was one of the many legendary Saturday nights in the history of house music operating throughout Leeds clubland. Here's a flyer from 2003 with a cheeky but respectful nod towards that infamous club on Station Road. Wonder how many of the younger Hard Times regulars saw and even understood the relevance of the design. Nice one. derek thank you K. -
the volumes "gotta give her love" on astra yellow vinyl
Derek Pearson posted a gallery image in Scans of Soul
From the album: memorabilia, record stores and stuff
The Volumes "Gotta Give Her Love" originally came out on the American Arts label sometime during the 1964-65 period. And what a great record it is. Supposedly a year later this yellow vinyl release surfaced on the Pittsburgh based Astra label which I'm lead to believe was a long, long way from being legitimate. This Steel City imprint just laughed in the face of licensing, royalties and all that boring stuff so the story goes. I'd long heard of this yellow vinyl 45 through countless nights of record gossiping with fellow obsessives. But I'd never seen one. But when I did - I couldn't help but marvel in its glow. In the darkness of winter months it's like a blast of sunshine. derek In all my years I've seen loads of the American Arts release but few if any of the Astra ones. It wouldn't suprise me one bit if these re-issues (coughs) are indeed much rarer than the legit ones. -

Annette Poindexter - Wayward Dream/mama - Twinight 132
Derek Pearson replied to John Reed's topic in Look At Your Box
Hey up Brett - it was only an assumption of mine that "Wayward Dream" is white demo only simply based on its rarity. But who knows what collectors have got tucked away somewhere. Have got a very faint recollection that it was the mighty Alan Darker that first put me onto it after hearing via one of his tapes at a Southport weekender circa early nineties. I tell you what is pretty amazing - - - there's no mention of Annette Poindexter anywhere in Popsike. Guess that means since Popsike was launched no copies of her Twinight 45 have sold through Ebay. That's my girl Kirsty - quick as a flash and you were in there hahaha.... And finally for those that don't know the tune under discussion here - this is what the fuss is all about: annette poindexter - wayward dream - -

Confession Time: "I, Derek Pearson have a short attention span and I get easily distracted". The Proof: My honest intensions this afternoon were to (a) mow the lawn before it starts raining and (b) take the dog out for a long walk before it starts raining. What have done this aft - spent the last hour or so pissballing about on the Internet making Google's Search Engine bleed hahaha -

Yep Yep sure did bang on the button! Good man Tony As daft as it sounds I never thought whether the gloves were significant or not untill I'd actually posted up the photo. Sort of wondered if Mick Howard in his first reply was hinting at this and I actually did wonder if anybody would suggest the name The Magicians. Good idea but then the clues wouldn't fit would they? Thanks for the interest chaps. Will reply with a scan of the rear of the photo in a couple o' minutes. Derek And can we have less frivolous talk about men polishing their balls please when we solemn collectors are trying to have a serious adult conversation....... Consider yourself told off hahaha. -
Annette Poindexter - Wayward Dream/mama - Twinight 132
Derek Pearson replied to John Reed's topic in Look At Your Box
In all the years I was chasing this record and in all the years since obtaining it I don't ever recall seeing a copy up for sale/auction/swop whatever, either in the UK or America or indeed anywhere. Wouldn't like to hazard a guess on price but its got to be up in the range Chris A mentioned previously. And you would think because of its high value people would occassionally be off loading them and copies would rotate around the world of collectors. How about this for a theory - because you never see them, is that a good indication of just how rare it is? Would assume it was a very limited white demo press at the time and never made it to the shops as a red issue. Think she only did 2 records - this one and the one on Brena "You'll get it right back" and I don't know which came first. Did Twinight sign here on the strength of the Brena 45? However if Brena came afterwards then Twinight must have signed her up as a virtual unknown? So despite her qualities she wasn't a big hitter and Twinight might have been tempted not to plough loads of money into her promotion. Whilst I remember has anybody got a copy of Harrison & Majestic Kind on Twinight for sale or swop please? onwards, derek The story of how I got my copy is one of those just bizarre 'once in every ten years' allnighter stories that makes collectors just keep on looking and looking. And looking. And finally my copy has got a 1cm edge crack hence the pencil arrow at 7o'clock. -
I've had this record for years and years and usually about once a year I get revved up thinking "there must be a vocal to this somewhere". It's too good a sound not to have some vocal group wailing over it. The label details indicate a Philly connection so other musical contacts would have been easily possible. I'll make a sound clip and post up the question on Soul Source yes I will. I will..... Then I get distracted. I go to the toilet then make a cup of coffee and another year's gone by. Help me please. Let me get some closure hahaha..... I thank you, derek Some more background info on the 45: I do see it every now and then on US Sales lists for about a tenner, flip side is a reasonable uptempo group harmony type thing sounds a bit like Four Seasons "Sherry". It's not a secret who this instrumental is by - I didn't want to pre-empt replies by giving out details first. Will post up label scan tommorrow. The N - Calling All Girls - And yes I have tried tweeking its RPM up and down to see if it could work on a dancefloor.
-
ucking hell Nige your copy is that shiny you can see the outline of your head on it (gasp) hahaha. derek
-
Hi Lydia - just to clarify "Bad Girl" came out on 2 different labels in 2 slightly different versions not sure which one you're after. Check Refosoul. And tell Mister Steve real men prefer the Musicor version not the fluffy one on Gates. Mister Dyson used to have some Musicor 45s with slightly water damaged labels cheap. onwards, derek

Hey up Mick - hows it going? Long time no see. You ask if the gloves are significant - my reply would be "only for the wearer, only for the wearer". Clue number 1 in a series of 47: The group only released one single*. The city they were based in begins with C and the state begins with O. onwards, derek * I think?
