Does Barbara Acklin's immortal "Just Ain't No Love" win the prize of being the record that has been released in more countries than any other hahaha. Mexican I think. derek

In the sixties JJ Jackson had a 4 track EP of Calla recordings released on French Vogue. Saw this on Ebay many years ago (at least 10) and won it for next to nothing. Seem to think I was the only bidder. It was a pair of 7" single sided French Vogue white label acetates, each of the acetates had 2 songs from his EP on one side, the other side was blank. They arrived in the original waxy paper sleeve held together by the obligatory rusty staple. Nice. derek x

Haven't read through the whole thread properly yet so I'm well behind on it and more than likely duplicating details posted previously. From your tape listing the following are the proper group names and song titles, I've tagged on (what I think from memory are) the labels. embers-the first time (JCP) charmers-if youre looking for trouble (red label?) vito and salutations-id best be going (Sandbag same as Epitome Of Sound)) margie hendrix-one room paradise (Mercury?) bill horton-i wanna know (Kayden?) inverts-time will change (Broadway) later made popular again by Big Bad Bob Hinsley in mid 90s jimmy richards-i wont be responsible (A&M) And if you ever wanted a record to hold up as a prime example of just how different the sound, style and tempo of music being played by Guy during this period was (compared to say what had been played throughout the seventies and early eighties) look no further than this record.... Never in a million years would you realistically describe it as traditional northern soul, the tempo is far too slow, it's barely above walking pace, I mean come on it's not the sort of sound to create a stampede onto the dance floor is it? But what I imagine elevated this song onto Guy's playlist at the time was the superb lived in vocals and the dramatic, brooding sparse arrangement. Quite simply it's just a superb piece of sixties soul music. As soon as I could I scurried around and hunted down a copy shortly after hearing Guy play it. It takes an awful lot of confidence and a fair bit o' testicles for a DJ to play a tune like this at an all-nighter. Nice one Guy. I tip my hat to you. That's why so many people hold him high up in their esteem. Jimmy Richards - I Won't Be Responsible - A And M

Ultra Rare Northern Soul 45 - Johnny Lincoln - Teri De - Offers
Derek Pearson replied to a topic in Record Sales
hey up Craig - just to be clear - do ya mean both of the songs done by Johnny Lincoln on Teri De were also recorded by Jimmy Norman? Also to save time here's a YouTube link to Jewel & The Rubies "Kidnapper on La Louisianne, which apparently came out in 1963 and never dented the American Top 40 charts. Yeah my ears reckon somebody was being a bit liberal cutting and pasting back in 1963. What do you think? https://youtu.be/ER9DVvYH5sw derek x -
Ultra Rare Northern Soul 45 - Johnny Lincoln - Teri De - Offers
Derek Pearson replied to a topic in Record Sales
Well done Tommy. Tell you what though it sounds very similar to Jewell & The Rubies "Kidnapper" (La Louisianne) local then (ABC) national. To my ears the Teri De intro is a straight lift. Thought I'd plunder Refosoul to back up my observation and was suprised not to find any clips of Jewell's song. If I get chance tommorrow - and I remember - I'll post up a clip of "Kidnapper" for your comparison. Love the lyrics as it name drops stars of the day all the way through the song - Perry Mason and The FBI to name but two. derek x -

Euro-Only 70S Dancers With No 45 Or Lp Release Anywhere Else?
Derek Pearson replied to Benji's topic in Look At Your Box
Here's some more ideas for you to flesh out Benji (though I suspect you've already thought about them). What about making a database complete with full details, label scans & picture sleeves of Euro Only releases. Also and here comes the big one... What about making a datebase of all known soul 45s released in Europe split into each different country? Over the last 20-30 years I reckon probably 95% of all US and UK soul 45s have been documented and listed somewhere. As far as I know nobodies ever done or started doing soul 45s released in Europe. Maybe they have. I've got a boxful of 45s with picture sleeves trawled over the years from numerous visits to Spain and Italy. And I sure many other collectors on here have likewise. Suspect none of them are Euro only and most got a 45 release in either the UK and/or US. But that's not the point. With all the knowledge on this forum, just look how quick that initial handfull of yours Benji - in your original post - soon swelled onto an A4 sheet. I do realise as well Benji that to complete this European soul 45 database you'll probably have to give up your job, stop all family life, never sleep, work 22 hours a day at it and live till you're 110. But apart from that..... You can do it Benji. I have full faith in you. Go on lad. onwards, derek x -
Euro-Only 70S Dancers With No 45 Or Lp Release Anywhere Else?
Derek Pearson replied to Benji's topic in Look At Your Box
Great idea and great thread Benji. for years I've often wondered about Euro only releases and thought there must be tons of stuff out there waiting to be scooped up everytime I used to go on holiday I would always come back home with a handfull of weird and wonderful 'soul sounding' 45s all with picture covers. but I never started compiling some sort of list simply because I knew virtually next to nothing about the subject. Er that's never stopped you rambling on about stuff before has it Derek? And on seeing the updated list you've compiled Benji I realise I still know next to nothing about the subject hahaha. Don't think I know or have heard three quarters of the stuff on your list. Keep at it Benji. derek -

The Man That Lived In Wigan Toilets
Derek Pearson replied to Derek Pearson's topic in All About the SOUL
As far as I know the photo was probably taken late 1970's/early 1980's. And If we call it 1980 it makes it so much easier to follow my ramblings.... The old bloke in the toilet looks to be a minimum of 70 years old (then) which means he was born in 1910 or thereabouts... .................................................................................................... History Lesson Number 1: "The Empress Ballroom on Station Road opened on November 1st 1916. It had a dancing area of 71 x 54 feet and a spectator gallery and supper room. In 1926 a new annex was built called the Pallais de Dance. The ballroom was originally owned by the Atherton Brothers. In 1965 it became known as the Wigan Casino. It was finally demolished in 1984". .................................................................................................... When he was about 20 he started work at The Empress Ballroom as a Junior Toilet Attendant. So we're now up to 1930. By the time he was 40- ish he'd been promoted to Senior Toilet Attendant with responsibility to manage all the toilet areas within the building. We're now in the 1950's the era of the Big Bands. He was probably at his peak then in terms of responsibilities and his standing within the club. He still gained respect from the patrons and probably supplemented his wage with generous tips. He always wore a maroon coloured velvet jacket and was never seen without his bowtie on. ...................................................................................................................................... Washroom Attendant from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: A washroom attendant, restroom attendant or bathroom attendant, is a housekeeper for a public toilet. They maintain and clean the facilities, ensuring that toilet paper, soap, paper towels, and other necessary items are kept stocked. Some washroom attendants also provide services to the patrons, and keep good order by preventing drug-taking and fights. Premium services: The attendant may turn on the tap and provide soap and towels. At the attendant's work station, an assortment of toiletries may be available for sale or free such as perfume/cologne, mouthwash, chewing gum or cigarettes. .............................................................................................................................................................. As he nudged 50 years of age things started to decline as the era they call the sixties beckoned. Gone was the respect. And Tips were no more as The Rolling Stones played on the famous stage. So by the time the infamous all-nighters started in 1973 he was already aged mid sixties. And his trusty highly polished leather shoes which had served him well for 20 odd years finally succumbed to the rigours of late seventies toilets. Whilst looking for background information of the old Empress Ballroom I stumbled across this superb website which lists and discusses old long gone venues and clubs from the 1950's - 1960's within the central Lancashire area. Packed with photos too. https://www.lankybeat.com/map.html Did you know there used to be a Casino Club in Leigh and even a Casino Club in Westhoughton..... derek -
A cursory glance through the 'Wants' section over the last 6 months or so, revealed to me that this 45 was the only one that several different people had requested. That's why my price is top end. ** Dramatics - Your Love Was Strange **
Derek Pearson replied to Premium Stuff's topic in Look At Your Box
Dramatics "Your Love Was Strange" (Volt 4029) time 3:00 released October 1969. My copy's a double sided WDJ; so I don't know what the flip side is on the issue; and I don't know if there's any difference in the mixes of "Your Love Was Strange" between the issue and/or white demo. dramatics - your love was strange - 4029 Dramatics "Your Love Was Strange" (Volt 4082) time 3:53 released 1972. Flip side "Toast To The Fool". And I don't know if there's any difference in the mixes of "Your Love Was Strange" between the orange issue and/or demo's. dramatics - your love was strange - volt Guess it depends on which version you hear first - I heard Volt 4029 first and thought it was truly awesome. Then I heard Volt 4082 and was slightly disappointed to be honest, it's good infact it's very good, but it doesn't come close to the first version on Volt 4029. Tony Rounce was spot on when he said he thought Volt 4082 "lacked a lot of the stark menace" of Volt 4029. To my ears Volt 4029 sounds more stripped down, more basic and less cluttered than Volt 4082. And nobody seem's to have mentioned there's over a 2 year gap between the two Volt releases so it made pretty obvious sense for Volt to "sweeten up" the song for it's seventies release. Phew. derek x -

Anybody interested in this? Obviously I would prefer a straight sale but possibly willing to trade for other records or do a part cash/part trade thing. It's always been valued @ a £150 touch but due to a few marks and the recession I'd take £120 or nearest offer for it. @ 21/04/2011 SOLD P&P extra. Please PM to discuss THE HEARTSTOPPERS "Same" (US All Platinum AP 3005) original 10 track vinyl album released out of Englewood, New Jersey in 1972. updated @ 21/04/2011 SOLD Time has proved this album to be very rare indeed and it's littered with great tracks that are only available on this album and never gained the benefit of a release on 45. For DJ's and collectors alike this immediately gives this album much more exclusivity. Run Out Groove: stamped AP 40006 GM / AP 40007 GM date scratched (?) 6/11/71 Label: clean black paper with silver text - Excellent Vinyl: full deep shine & gloss; has several light surface marks both sides which don't affect play; well recorded so music comes through loud and clear – overall a strong VG++ or better. Outer Sleeve: clean & flat; edge wear 1" seam split top edge; ring wear front – overall a solid VG+ or better. I don't know what type of card they used but virtually every original copy of this album that I've ever seen has a distinctive ring wear on the front and this copy is no different. Ebay Nightmare - Can I Protect Myself?
Derek Pearson replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
I see exactly where you're going on this Pete but as already hinted at there might just be a straight forward simple answer. For reasons which we'll never know, he's decided he doesn't want the records anymore, the condition of the records is not the issue, he's just saying that to obtain a no quarrel refund rather than tell you honestly that he can't afford them (or whatever) and get into possibly a long drawn out arguement with bitterness being the winner. What's his Ebay feedback say? Sometimes being super street wise goes against you - poor lad's being accused of murder and he hasn't thrown a punch yet hahaha.... Summat that I've just thought of - if you still have a niggling doubt about potential foul play, you could call his bluff by jokingly tell him that all records you sell have been indelibly marked with one of those special pens that only shows up under UV or summat. He can't check that to know whether you're telling the truth or not. Just call me Bond. James Bond. derek x
