  1. Whilst trawling a well known Auction site a few hours ago I gasped out loud when I spotted a copy of the CENtral 1179 book starting at £200. Pardon? Excuse Me? Having read this thread I can sorta/possibly/maybe see where she got that figure from....... derek Rarer than Frank Wilson and it took her 2 years to find a copy of the book...
  2. At the time it was a missing number in the Shrine catalogue, off hand I seem to think it was either The Counts or The Prophets 45. Ain't got time to tell the full story now suffice to say "they meant well"..... Had to laugh at this - my guilty secret number 9 is over the years I've become a bit of a conniseur of cardboard and all its foibles. Just by looking at waste cardboard boxes outside shops I can sorta tell whether it would be good for mailers. Just like a cobbler with shoes and a joiner with wood I do like the feel of a good bit of cardboard. I've even had several conversations with different people about it at various soul nites here and there. Even when they yawned I didn't let it put me off.... derek x
  3. Blimey in all my years of buying 45s I don't think I've ever been sent a 7" record through the post in a mailer without cardboard stiffeners. I'm pretty shocked that anybody would do that but in reality I'm not that suprised. I'd go bonkers if that happened to me. And if you think that's bad - years ago Andy Rix once told me a jaw dropping story about being sent a previously unknown Shrine 45 from America wrapped in just a paper bag. Think you can guess what happened........... derek
  4. As obsessive record collectors I'm sure many of us love to hear those jaw dropping stories about mates telling us how they discovered an old forgotten about shop somewhere in smalltown england years ago that had tons of old vinyl stacked up to the ceiling. Words like plundered and stripped immediately spring to mind. Oh yes come to papa..... Was only recently talking to a mate who was recalling a story about a place he'd discovered, in a town I used to live in, years and years ago. ** Over quite a long period of time he quietly and steadily proceeded to empty the shop of all its desirable 45s without once making a fuss or telling anybody. B*stard! I wasn't jealous or impressed. Yes I was and told him so. To fight back with my own stories I was trying to recount tales I'd been told by seveal different people I think over the years of an old shop somewhere in the hills above Oldham that had lain forgotten about since the late 1960's right up untill the early/mid 1970's. Only the odd person knew about it and they virtually helped themselves to all the old stock that was just gathering dust and cluttering up the place. But I failed miserably to impress my old buddy as I couldn't recall any fine details about the shop's name, where it was exactly, who were the chosen few that got in and what sort of time period are we talking about. Laughs. I'm pretty sure this quite legendary store and tale has been discussed on here before, albeit very briefly, so to clear up all the loose ends in my mind once and for all - lets put this story down into print. Come on chaps tell all. I thank you, derek x ** names and places witheld to protect the guilty obviously.
  5. Great thread Mister ChorleyBloke. Of all the superclubs littered throughout the history of this scene I've always thought it was the Blackpool Mecca that was the least documented. Apart from the well known Cartstairs crowd what about all those fascinating Mecca One Spin wonders and legend inspiring Colin Curtis's last or first (can't remember now) hour plays. I suspect because of the sheer volume and warp speed turnover of tunes available who'd have the inclination, time and notepads to hand to scribble it all down? Must admit though I can immediately think of 2 well known suspects who probably did just that at the time........ And if you want another observation to back up my opening statement have a quick trawl through the folders in the Gallery and see just how little evidence there is in there. derek x Hey up Misters Ferguson & Taylor. And finally I vividly recall a woman I used to work with from the Keighley area, telling me once (quite nonchalantly) that she'd been to The Blackpool Mecca on a girls night out/hen night whatever and seen The Chi-lites there. I was green with envy but being a bloke I didn't show it. The group would have been touring on the strength of their big UK chart hit "Have You Seen Her" which first hit the money in early 1972 and then later in the summer of 1975. I suspect it was in the later time period she attended.....
  6. Derek Pearson playing some of his favourites Sat 20th August 2011. Dee Pee saying it for soul. Shades Of Soul 21.00-22.00pm. Bradford Community Based Radio BCB106.6FM People that know me will confirm that I’m not very good at blowing my own trumpet (ooh er) but on this occasion I just couldn’t help myself. This afternoon I briefly viewed my playlist and nodded quietly “yeah tonight’s show is a solid mix of simply great records”. Many of them you won’t be surprised to hear are some of my own personal favourites. Yeah I’d be proud to nail this playlist on my headstone. As CD’s of the recording get passed around by mates I’m pretty sure in 10 years time if I looked back over tonight’s selection of tunes I’d argue with anybody that these 20 plus records still stand up tall. But the story of how it came about just confirms how weird and wonderful life is, or should I say my life is... I’d been trying to book the studio for a slot on Thursday but for various reasons it never came off. An arrangement to view some records out of town on Friday had already been confirmed and - as it happens sometime - of all the available studio time on that day, try as I could, none of it would marry up with my limited time schedule. So Friday dinnertime I stuck 2 x 100 count boxes of records in the boot of my car and set off on my travels with a notion to ring the studio up later in the day to double check if any last minute windows had opened up. As I trundled back home over the moors above Huddersfield just after six I rang the studio and yep you guessed it - Walt Disney is set to make a motion picture film about it. Studio Manager said his plans had changed which very conveniently opened up an 8-9pm vacancy in studio 2. So I had at my disposal roughly 200 singles with their labels covering the letters G to L. If you would like to hear the show live there’s 2 ways to go about it – if you live within say 10 miles of the BD1 based studio tune your radio to the 106.6 frequency on your FM dial and you should be able to get it. Failing that go through the wonders of the world wide web on www.bcbradio.co.uk and hear it streamed live out of your PC. Dee Pee’s wonderful selection of them old 45s: More details to follow after I’ve walked Ruby in the rain. But here’s a quick list of the artists featured. 7. Hey up Salmon how's it going? Ain't got a copy for sale sorry - but here's one of those record bar stories collectors always tell. Had one a few years ago and flogged it - was telling Mick Howard about it and he said that's my old copy. From what I remember the same record passed through several well known people's hands, within a couple o' years or so, all within the Manchester area. Wonder where it is now? Can't recall who I sold it to erm? Calling Mick Howard to the rescue......... derek x
  8. Oh please don't set me off again rambling on about Tami Lynn "I'm gonna run away from you" on Irish Polydor which I'm sure I've seen and handled many years ago. Late 1970's at least. Would love to see a label scan if anyone's got one..... Right that's it Derek - move away from the keyboard. Do not attempt to type anymor

His playlist tonight will almost certainly reflect the ethos of the club he promotes. Expect the weird. Expect the wonderful. And that’s just the guests... And as usual if you’re interested in hearing the show live there’s 2 ways to go about it – first try the good old 106.6FM frequency on your radio if you live within say 10 miles of the studio and secondly through t’ wonders of the world wide web www.bcbradio.co.uk Onwards, Derek All Era’s. 13. Just 3 original 45s up for grabs this time. All the vinyl is in Excellent condition, there is some slight brown spot ageing on the labels check the scans. As Refosoul is still under construction I've included YouTube clips just to remind you how damn good these 3 records are. BESSIE BANKS “Don’t You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come” mono/stereo (US Quality) WDJ Excellent £200. Always been brilliant. Always been chased by collectors. Competition between DJs has helped push the price upwards steadily over the last decade or so. HOLLYWOOD FLAMES “Dance Senorita” (US Symbol) Excellent £125. SOLD One of the harder ones on this label that doesn’t often turn up. After years in the shadows it seems to have gained alot of new admirers recently which has pushed its price up considerably. Don’t let the song title put you off – underneath it’s a rather fine solid piece of quality mid pace group harmony. MELVIN ELLING “Lonely Eyes” (US Stretch) Excellent £100. SOLD Super duper mid pace item that’s still under the radar, not known by the masses yet and still awaiting lots more potential dance floor exposure by them DJ’s.. History lesson part 1: The label was owned by Willie Lee McCovey, a famous American Major League Baseball Player of the time, whose nickname was Stretch, hence the label name and dinky looking little logo design. He played most of his career at the San Francisco Giants so I would assume that's where this label was based. PM or email me on pearson544@btinternet.com to reserve/discuss blah blah blah..... Not entertaining offers on any of these 3 records initially. Might do later on if they don’t sell. Payment by cheque (UK) or Paypal on pearson544@btinternet.com Same deal as before - if you do me the favour by sending the ££ through Paypal as a gift, I will cover the P&P costs and mail you the record by Special Delivery (UK only) Can’t say fairer than that as we say up north. derek x
  14. Hi Dave - glad you enjoyed the photo; it must be a bit of a surprise to see yourself on somebody elses photo but still quite nice nonetheless. I'm sure many of us (myself included) look at other people's photos and think wonder if there'll be me on any of the photos wandering about in the background. Nice one. derek
  15. Glad you enjoyed the photo Andy. Have a look at the photo labelled Todmorden memickkyle 20Oct80 is that you in the top left corner? Time to get up mi ladder. derek
  16. I remember listing my original copy on Ebay sometime in May of last year. Straight away I started to receive messages from interested buyers asking me if my copy was original as there were reissues floating about. Just like most people have already said on here I had absolutely no idea it had been reissued (coughs) and for what reason and where was the demand coming from? After a quick search through google here's what Piccadilly Records in Manchester was saying: EUGENE JEFFERSON "A PRETTY GIRL DRESSED IN BROWN" / "HIGH PRESSURE BLUES" 7" £ 5.99 Limited dinked reissue with replica US label artwork. 500 copies only. "A Pretty Girl Dressed In Brown" is a killer northern soul / rhythm & blues crossover tune with a great vocal and hot band - perfect for the dancefloor. "High Pressure Blues" reverts to straight-up rhythm & blues and rocks it good. My File Notes from that time say "the repro's use silver text on the label whilst originals have a nice warm gold touch. This is probably due to them using a copy of a label scan rather than copying straight from the original 45 label. An original has stamped matrixes UK4M 0135 (on "Pretty Girl" side), UK4M 0136 (on "High" side) and lightly scratched numbers LO-033 / LO-034. On both sides this stamp has been lightly scratched out but is still readable. I'd be surprised if the repro's have anything stamped in the run outs - they're more likely to just have scratched numbers. See attached label scans of my old original copy And finally there was always a suggestion that this record sounded very similar in parts to Darrell Banks "Open the door to your heart" - could never hear it myself. onwards, derek In the end up my orig copy sold for about £90 on Ebay.
  17. Couldn't stop myself chipping in even though it doesn't answer any of Keith's original posting. When I was a nipper and still wearing shorts at all-nighters in the late seventies I regularly used to hear about a Darrell Banks black London issue that somebody had or had once seen. Grown men used to gasp just at the thought of it. Over the years with no copy ever surfacing I put its mythology down to a combination of over enthusiasm and white powder confusion. Then sometime in the 1990's this long term mystery was solved. The copy people were talking about wasn't infact a UK London black issue, it was a South African London black issue that looked very similar to the UK released black London issues of the day. I've got a sneaking feeling I might have even been sent a label scan of it which I duly posted up in a copy of 'Shades Of Soul' at the time. Does this story ring any bells with anyone? derek x And I don't think it was some sort of label mock up like the Volumes on UK Pama one which I fell for Roy Wright style...
  18. Did I Benji? (sound of confused, embarrassed laughter in background.....) Wonder if I had 2 copies then? Sold one to you and kept one? Mmmm? The mysteries of life eh? onwards, derek x
  19. Up for grabs here is a couple of 45s I haven't offered before and a handfull of leftovers from previous sales attempts. All in Excellent condition unless stated. James Fountain "Seven Day Lover" (US Peachtree) Excellent £425 SOLD If you've ever wanted a copy of this stone cold classic this is the one to buy. I know where it's been, I know its history and its provenance. I actually found this copy as old un-used store stock in the states some 20 odd years ago and to be perfectly honest I thought I'd sold it about 10 years ago when I was trying to raise some cash just prior to another one of my house moving cycles. Obviously I didn't move it on and somehow it must've got mixed up with a load of other stuff and over the last decade or so has sunk deeper and deeper into those scratty cardboard boxes on the floor marked "one day I'll have a look through these and see what some of these 45s sound like...." So you can imagine my total surprise on lifting a lid off one of these boxes recently and there blinking in the daylight was good old JF looking up at me. And I'm pretty sure the whole darn street heard me shout Yes Go On...... Probably only played it out whilst DJing less than a dozen times as well. And yes it's got all the correct run out markings to confirm its originality. Otis Clay "You Hurt Me For The Last Time" 3:36 / "Baby Jane" 2:20 (UK Red Atlantic 584282) large centre hole released in 1969. Date stamped 11 July 1969. Slight label damage BJ side. Excellent £75. Earnest Nelson "I'll Make It Someday" (US Runaway) obscure Hollywood dancer VG+ £25. Patience Valentine "Our Love( A Special Blending)" 2:45 (US M.J.R. Records) Excellent £20 SOLD Simply superb mid seventies deep soul. As good as it gets. John Edwards "The Look On Your Face / It's Those Little Things That Count" (US Bell) styrene WDJ Excellent £200 Jimmy Barnes "If By Any Chance / Maybe Never" (US Sue) Excellent £125 SOLD The Electrifying Cashmeres "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" (US Sound Stage Seven) styrene Radio Station Copy Ex £50. The Drapers "Your love has gone away" / "You got to look up" (US Gee) WDJ Near Mint £75. Fred Hughes "Don't let me down" (US Vee Jay) WDJ pretty damn rare on a white demo me thinks. Near Mint £35. Bobby Wade "I'm In Love With You" (US Way Out) Excellent £20. Super soul from Cleveland, arranged by Mike Terry no less. Brook Benton "Where Does A Man Go To Cry" (RCA 8944) WDJ £10. Gotta be in the Top 100 Beat Ballads of all time! Old Roger banks spin. Forgot to mention writing on label so reduced it down from £15 to a tenner. Paul Sindab "Can't wait no longer" (US Kasika) Excellent £40 Offers may be considered on certain records. PM or email (pearson544@btinternet.com) me for more details/to reserve/to discuss etc. Payment by cheque (UK) or Paypal as a gift would be nice. On any record over a hundred quid I'll do the same deal as before - if you do me a favour by sending the ££ to me through Paypal as a gift, I will cover the P&P costs and mail you the record by Special Delivery (UK only) UK postage (with recorded delivery) for any other record is £2. Ta very muchly. Spend away with freedom and abandonment. derek x

  22. When the right honourable mister angus oldfield from barnsley guested with me on BCB Radio* recently he opened his selection by playing this rather wonderful tune off his copy of the French EP. He also said that the single version was different to the one on the MGM album. Pretty sure he told me more but if he did I can't remember. Sorry. Is it simply that on the 45's it was a much louder recording thus making it sound much more punchy and dynamic compared to the quieter sounding LP mix? derek Saturday 28th May 2011 Bradford BCB Radio 106.6 on the good old FM dial.
  23. Here's a rather nice French Vogue copy of Shirley's rather fine "Because I love you" complete with a pretty funky sleeve. It's quite a while since I last played this 45 so I stuck it on the old Technics before uploading these scans. Don't know whether the sun's gone to mi head or not but it sounded slightly different to the Calla 45 as I remember it? A touch slower and a much louder recording. Will dig the Calla 45 out to compare.... derek x
  24. It must have been back end of last year when I was reading Mark Bicknell's thread 'Are there any Scientists Of Soul Kashe white demos?'. Meant to reply and even got around to scanning a couple of items to include, but time moved on and it quietly slipped off my to do list. Saw these 2 scans lurking about yesterday and decided to make my move. Complete that circle Pearson. Finish that task. Did a quick search through the Forums to discover it was November 2010 when Mark started the thread. But the thread had been locked. No probs - start my own. Danny White "King For A Day" / "Never Like This" (Kashe 443) Alright it's not a white demo but it is date stamped - November 15 1969 - which is interesting and slots the label into a time frame. The really interesting bit though is the original hand typed promotional letter that accompanied said record. I already had the Danny White 45 as I collected the label but one day whilst trawling Ebay many years ago (possibly 10?) I spotted this Danny White record listed. But what really caught my eye in the sellers blurb were the words 'with promotional letter included' ........Mmm sounds interesting me thinks. I duly bid and won the record for $5 or summat. Turns out I was the only bidder. I only bid on it to get my my hands on this letter. I love collecting these bits of record company ephemera, they help to fill in gaps in the history of the music we collect. onwards, derek x Oh and to answer Mark Bicknell's original question: No, I've never seen or had a Scientists Of Soul white demo. Would very much like one though. I've had a WDJ of Richard Russell though. Oh and these were the Kashe 45s listed in my old files: Scientists Of Soul Kashe 442 Danny White Kashe 443 Richard Russell Kashe 444
  25. And last one from me - The Turn-A-Rounds super top double sider on French Liberty complete with picture sleeve. Got released on Minit in the states, and for those that don't know it, one side's a crunching northern dancer that needs more plays and the other's a great beat ballad type thing. derek x time to walk mi dog on t' moors whilst the sun is still shining.....
