When I was a little boy my mother once said to me; Derek when you get older keep away from nightclubs and discos as they are full of strange people; I never listened and of course her advice made me want to go to clubs even more. A picture paints a thousand words (Telly Savalas 1975) derek x -

Was just about to reply "yeah I'm sure I've got a copy of that somewhere upstairs" when I paused and thought next time I go upstairs to the toilet best double check my boxes. Glad I did. Oops I haven't got the record you're after sorry - it's Bob's 'Paradise' album on double 12inch vinyl from 1998 that I've got gathering dust on the shelves. derek

Dells - Run For Cover - Chess - Stone Mint
Derek Pearson replied to Dave Thorley's topic in Record Sales
Is this record simply super fabulous? Pointless question really as I suspect the majority on here would agree without hesitation. What is a bit more tricky to discover is where does the expression "stone mint" come from? We all know what it means and I use it myself quite often. I even googled the expression but that didn't even throw up its history. Somebody help me out. derek -
I often meet people whose favourite hobbies seem to revolve around opening beer cans and watching television preferably both at the same time. By reading your history it's clear to see how your hobby developed bit by bit into what's looking like is gonna be a life long obsession. Who couldn't be more impressed by your dedication and determination to interview scores of ageing Chicago singers from years gone by and documenting their story before time forgets. Nice one Bob. My respect is obvious and unashamed. Derek If I had a crystal ball I'd like to think it would predict you in the future as compiling albums of under valued Chicago music for an old College buddy of yours....

Bet there's quite a few long time UK collectors on here with massive massive collections whoes homes must be some sort of fire risk going by this news report. It would be interesting to know how US home fire regulations compare with the UK's though. Never noticed any sort of clauses regarding possible fire risks on my Home Buildings and Contents Insurance which is renewed annually. If I think on I'll have a look. That's not saying that my collection is that massive in the first place hahaha. derek

Did I Ian are you sure? But as you taught me a long time ago Mister Cunliffe there's nothing more rum than rum on a rum day. I sold you the book and over the years you twisted my arm and forced me to buy Mel Williams Buddah issue, Bobby Wilburn Gamble issue and various others (list to be continued) I wasn't keen on - so that makes us just about even in my book (smile).... See ya soon ya little rascal derek x

Deon Jackson "I can't go on" (US Carla 45-1900) Deon Jackson "I can't go on" (UK Contempo-Raries CS-9031) I'm supposed to know a bit about soul music and for years I'd known about the UK Contempo version of this song being different to its American cousin but a combination of forgetfulness and a 1001 things to do like everybody else seriously hampered my chances of actually getting 'round to comparing them. Then about a month ago I recall Gibby from Halifax raving to me about the UK Contempo release he was carrying about in his hand and I made a mental note that night to put some time aside to try and finally track down some sound clips to end my curiosity. Never let it be said that the Internet isn't truly a wonderful, fascinating, mind boggling ocean to swim in. Whatever you can think of - good or bad - it's out there just a keyboard away. Enter YouTube stage door left. Talk about everything laid out on a plate or what? I tapped Deon's name into the websites search engine and in less than 10 minutes I'd ticked off another one of those things on my list of 'stuff I had to do before I die'. It's funny but we all know lots but we all know nothing compared to others. I was quite surprised really to discover how many collectors - who I thought would know all about these 2 different versions - didn't know anything about them. It's never ending and it's that which keeps us going. I guess if Soul Source and it's members were ever to write a 'mission statement' (now there's an idea Mike) I'm pretty certain key words like sharing, co-operation, information gathering, selling me records cheap and loads of other words I can't think of at the moment would be laid down in bold print. This thread which is the first in hopefully a long winded series of mine will highlight all that is good about this forum. Nice one Mike. Idea germinated from this thread in Look at Your Box Dramatics Your Love Was Strange Started by Premium Stuff, Apr 09 2011. Why use 10 words when a thousand will do hahaha. derek x Deon Jackson "I can't go on" (US Carla 45-1900) Deon Jackson "I can't go on" (UK Contempo-Raries CS-9031)

From the album: Buildings I've met along the way
spotted this fascinating piece of old vintage graffiti recently and just had to go back armed with my camera to record it before it got covered over once again. derek -
wish I wasn't some bloody obsessive.... only spent an hour or so trawling old photos on the web when I should've been roasting my chestnuts or summat Lichfield Street Wolverhampton Old Vic Hotel on left facing old Co-op store on right. derek x

call me old fashioned but I do like reading about people's fond memories of record shops they frequented in years gone by. But what I really like looking at is them old creased black n white photos of said record stores but there must be something in the human psychia that either takes for granted those common everyday items or we simply never think on to take pictures of our favourite haunts. I'm just as bad as everybody else. derek I've just had an idea! Mmmm Once whilst trawling for records somewhere north of Miami I found an old electrical store that supposedly sold some of them old 45s. As I got to the front door I noticed in the window a small hand written note that said 'I sell soul records'. Come to Pappa. I did take a photo and I know I've still got it somewhere in amongst a thoussand and one boxes....

Derek Pearson & Mick Howard On Ian Obeng's Night
Derek Pearson replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
This is why God gave you ears -
For me The Tomangoe's ticks every box I can think of that every northern record should have. It's as good as it gets. Roll this idea around in your head for a bit - regardless of who is actually fronting the band - with a vocalist that good surely he went onto record other stuff after Washpan? I doubt he'd have been happy as a background singer so it would have been lead vocal or nothing. His vocals are quite distinctive and up untill this day I've never heard anybody ever say about a record "blimey that vocalist doesn't half sound like him in The Tomangoe's". Maybe any other recordings by The Tomangoe's stayed locked in the can. Imagine in your dreams if an unissued Washpan acetate turned up on Ebay in the near future....... And whoes to say there aren't any tucked away somewhere in this big wide world? derek And bizarrely I don't think I've ever heard the flip side "You've Been Gone So Long" what's it like? And didn't Gilly once get a couple o' copies of The Tomangoe's whilst hunting out an about in Detroit in the mid 80's?

Remember going there - think it was on the road from the train station into town. An upstairs room and pretty dark as I recall? Think they had some sorta little room downstairs as well that was even darker. First time I ever paid double figures for a record hahaha. Boy was I Bobby BigBolloxs that night - they were dragging on t' floor - now I was a man and had joined the big boys league of serious record collectors (or so I thought........). My tenner had bought Garnett Mimms 'Looking For You' on British United Artists. Previous highest was £8 for Vibrations 'Cause You're Mine' Epic WDJ. Derek just call me Big Wad

Rare 70's, Modern Soul, Crossover - Some Real Gems
Derek Pearson replied to Pete S's topic in Record Sales
And despite this being a 70's release and by some sort of white rock type group said record was a massive sixties newie c/up as Williams & Watson "Nobody ever said it was gonna be easy" for Mister Searling at WC in the early 1980s. derek x -
Anybody want a copy of the rare book 'The Sound Of Philadelphia' (UK Methuen 0 413 34080 5) written by Tony Cummings, former Black Music magazine features writer. Written in 1975 it's a fascinating insight into the musical history of Philadelphia starting with a detailed look at the roots of The Philly Sound. This authentic account comes direct from interviews with the producers, singers, & writers involved. 150 pages with no tears, rips or writing; littered with great black 'n' white photos; age worn and well read. If this was a record I'd grade it VG+ - call it £10 for a quick sale. SAID BOOK IS NOW SOLD. Ta Add £3 for UK postage or if you know me I'll bring it to a venue (aiming to go Lowton Friday 9th and Bradford EBU Saturday 10th December). Paypal or cheque is fine. onwards, derek

As previously mentioned in sales already - it's the same song as "I'll tell it to the wind" by Tommy Rodgers on AJP but obviously isn't TR. The unknown singer on this soundclip might not be the best vocalist in the world but it's a reasonable effort. He's still unidentified though. derek

Assuming this was what it was covered up as could it have been that Chuck Flamingo thing "What's my chances" on Rujac under the paper? Sorry Chalky I glanced at this thread and this was the first thing that came into my mind. My brain's mush and I haven't been spending too much time on the computer. derek x

Hey up Salmon - hope you're well on the road to recovery now. Assuming it's "The girl every guy should know" that you're after I have a copy in my possession that soon could be living in downtown Rochdale if negotiations are successful. If you twist my arm enough I'm sure you could talk me into trading it for The Enjoyables on Capitol (smile) failing that some hard cash would be very nice indeed. If you're going to Paul Harris's super wonderful EBU next saturday 10th I'm sure we can argue/discuss a bit more.... derek x

Derek Pearson playlist 12-1am It was the first time I'd been behind the decks at the Wilton for a couple of years so I was really looking forward to it and my intention was to try and spin as many records as I could that I'd never played there before and more importantly still keep people moving on the dance floor. I also had a little sneaky competition with myself to see "what was the cheapest record I could play which still received a good reception". Think I got it down to a fiver.....
