Great Motown dancer looking very desireable indeed on red vinyl
  2. From the album: memorabilia, record stores and stuff

    Pretty neat sleeve me thinks
  3. After all these years good to see my old grey matter hasn't let me down Ammon Feldman "Only Girl I Had / In New York City" (Chess 1990) released in 1967. but it's credited to Yiddish Soul Brother Amnon as Mace states. See thread here: derek x
  4. With little time and without checking into anything before I post, but still wanting to contribute before I take my dog out as the light fades..... It's not that custom press 45 on Cadet or summat is it? There was a thread about it 6 months or so - suppoused to be the rarest on the label as it was some sort of custom press - Steve G has a copy and its rated £1000+. Of course I could be getting confused..... derek x
  5. I always thought that for a big massive multinational company like Ebay it used to have a terrible customer service record. For years there was never a phone number advertised anywhere for customers to ring up for advice re complaints etc (that speaks for itself in my book - they don't want to get bogged down by phone complaints, after all it's much easier for them to fend you off online). And then when you did found a number to ring it was in Luxemborg which sorta puts many people off I guess from ringing due to the percieved high cost. Its only in recent years that they've added a phone number for customer enquiries. Oops you're right steve - I overlooked this point in my giddiness to rant. derek
  6. Never actually been a great lover of instrumentals myself and the only 3 I’ve ever regularly danced to over the years have been “Exus Trek”, NF Porter and Stanley Mitchell. Was at a good mates house a few months ago and he showed me one of his new purchases — Paradox on UK Polydor — was quite surprised really as he doesn’t collect British or instrumentals. Vaguely remembered reading (from Pete Smith I think) about a vocal to it but couldn’t recall any more details. Last release on UK black RCA design or summat? And when I heard it I couldn’t believe just how bad it was. Shocked of Bradford Derek Paradox David Walker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sFhlY48_4o
  7. Well done Steve - I like it when things like this happen. You were in the right and could prove you were in the right and Ebay backed you. But what happens to the buyer that tried to rip you off? How does Ebay deal with him? Does he get a strongly worded letter from Ebay telling him he's been a naughty boy and not to do it again 'cos they're watching him...(that'll have him shaking like a jelly no doubt) You've no idea if he's pulled the same trick before (chances are that he will have) so the only people that know are Ebay and the rogue buyer himself. Maybe this chaps name has been flagged up before as "suspect", so when you complained to Ebay and mentioned his name, that's why you got such a rapid response within 5 minutes and got a good result. Nice one. derek
  8. One of the greatest joys of record collecting is finding (or should I re-discovering) a record you’ve had tucked away for years; a record you couldn’t actually recall the last time you ever played it; a record to be honest you couldn’t even remember what it sounded like — but on hearing it again you knew exactly why you’d bought it and kept it all these years. The Ultimates on Capito; on a tiny not often talked label out of Detroit city; a lush midtempo group item from 1968. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8Z0hSHZEP4 After a bit o’ delving about on the internet (couldn’t stop myself) this is all I could find. Capito Records, Detroit, Michigan 48207. The Quinns “I Knew” 2:25 / “(It's) Been A Long Time” 2:22 (Capito C-2022) Both sides written by D. McCants; both sides arranged and produced by Donald McCants & Larry Capito. A Marchioni Production. Dated 1966. The Ultimates “Just Because You’ve Gone And Left Me” CA 2005 2:37 / The Quinns “Never Leave Me” CA 2006 2:50 (Capito C-2023) Dated 1968. Both sides written and produced by Donald McCants & Larry Capito. Sadly The Quinns on the flip side of this is just an instrumental, albeit slightly beefed up, of the vocal top side. Hope this isn’t an indication of what Capito 2022 sounds like. Oh and if anybodies after a copy pretty sure Dolly13 was selling one on here only last month at a nice price. derek x
  9. Wigan Casino ‘Billboard’s Best Disco in the World’ 1978? Oh no not that old chestnut again (yawn) but read on and make up your own mind. In virtually every article you can read about this famous Lancashire club it always mentions somewhere that it was voted ‘Billboard’s Best Disco in the World’ in 1978? Fair enough it’s such a prestigious award that any club would be over joyed to win it and probably wouldn’t stop telling anybody and everybody that they had. And so it was that in June 2011, The Guardian (no less) repeated the Billboard award story in their series of the 50 key events in the history of dance music, which in itself is a great read if you’ve got the time. https://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jun/15/wigan-greatest-disco A few months later in September 2011, I read an online interview with Richard Searling in which he’s asked the question ‘Did Wigan Casino deserve its title of “Billboard’s Best Disco in the World” in 1978?’ https://www.sabotagetimes.com/music/northern-soul-legend-on-25-years-of-expansion-records/ Must admit I’d often wondered about this award myself and his reply made sense. Then made me chuckle. What a brilliant bit of marketing eh? Are you saying Mr Pearson that if somebody makes an outrageous claim with no evidence to back it up, then eventually when it’s often repeated over a long period of time it becomes regarded as fact? What a stroke of genius - I wonder who at Wigan Towers thought of that idea? Bear in mind that famous quote “A lie can travel halfway round the world while the truth is putting on its shoes”. Alright calling it a lie might be a touch too strong - remember this is marketing folks (smile). Also in the interview Richard Searling names his top 5 Wigan Casino classics. Phew you can’t argue with any of his choices. I nearly burst into tears on playing the sound clip that accompanied his top choice. In the days when records were BIG this record was absolutely massive, it was worth travelling just to hear that record on its own. Going back to the Billboard award - not many people know that the James Bond story was modelled on me....... derek x
  10. From the album: It was never the same after 1978

Aah bless little Linky from Halifax had just finished his paper round and was feeling a little tie tie. He fell asleep and somehow woke up on a coach with all the big boys destination bound Wigan. To his left was organiser of the coach I think (Phil?). Seat in front next to window with poppy in lapel - Bob Bloor (RIP).
  11. From the album: memorabilia, record stores and stuff

Regularly frequented this mainly black club in an area of Bradford which Americans would politely describe as "less than desireable". In all my time spent in clubs - when New Edition was at its peak - I've never been anywhere as jam packed as that. Fire regulations - bah never heard of 'em?! Run by the enterprising Peltier brothers. Nigel Parker and I ran a monthly soul night there which didn't attract the same numbers..... Remember having Bryan Powell (Talking Loud) doing a live PA one night and had my picture taken with him which duly appeared in Blues & Soul. I was nearly famous for a couple o' minutes. derek x

Damn another super funky box I'm not ashamed to say I once dreamt about...
  14. From the album: memorabilia, record stores and stuff

How super top funky is this? One of the few record boxes I was jealous about....
  15. From the album: Adventures in America

Stock room at a well known record warehouse in Pittsburgh. Behind me was the back wall and the walls to my left and right both housed a similar amount. Oh and this was just one of several stock rooms. So where would you start?
  16. Damn I wish I had the talent to write summat like this: "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." Hunter S. Thompson I will be adding more quotes as time and inclination pemits. I'll also be asking for help in clarifying some quotes - all I've got is a vague jumble of words in the wrong order. In the meantime please add yours. derek x
  17. Hey up Mal great thread. Don't know whether it's my computer, my settings or summat but it's taken at least 40 minutes to read all 4 pages of the thread from start to finish (whinge whinge moan moan). With all the YouTube links (which I love) and replies which include the same YouTube links again, my computer just goes into stuttering meltdown when trying to turn a page over hahaha. Takes at least 5 minutes to load a new page (does this happen to anybody else?) nearly threw a wobbler several times miself. Anyway, after all that I'm gonna add a YouTube link to slow the whole thread down even more...... Jesse James come on down those stairs - it's your time to shine. derek x
  18. Hey up Dani I trust the sun is shining in Valencia. When you're DJing playing good music** is non negotiable that surely comes as standard. But let's not forget you're also in the game of selling yourself. As a DJ you want other promoters to book you and you want the crowd to like you. Top tip plain and simple - Start big and end big. You gotta let 'em know you're there. Right let's get this party started. That sounds so straighforward and easy doesn't it - if only hahaha..... derek x ** or what you think is good music (smile) and therein lies another often repeated debate that will never end.
  19. great little tune from 1965 and Bobby Hutton's first ever 45 release so I'm lead to believe. derek x
  20. Mmmm 'tis a lovely little bit of history. The Buy It Now @ $175 is actually a re-listing, he first listed it with starting bids @ $9.98 but got no takers which I'm quite surprised at. Would be interesting to know how the auction house in Detroit actually got hold of the masters and if they've got anything else to come out. derek
  21. What a record definately in my Top 100. It's the sorta record that used to make me drive 100 miles in the driving rain and stop out after midnight in the vain hope of just hearing it. derek x
  22. Nina Simone “Take Care Of Business” (Philips LP) Was always told this track was album only but I’m sure I once saw a Philips 45 of it on a Pete Smith sales list for £20 years ago (possibly 10+). Seem to think I was so surprised I contacted Pete and asked him if it was the same recording as the album one and he said it was. Sort of intended to get back to him to purchase said 45 but slippage of time and memory got in the way. Of course there is the chance I could be getting this completely mixed up with another album only track......... derek x
  23. Nina Simone “Take Care Of Business” (Philips LP) Just over 2 minutes long this track is hardcore. One listen tells you it’s the real deal. The definition of atmospheric. It’s so moody it drips tears. and this is the updated remix edit Nina Simone “Take Care Of Business” (Pilooski Edit) derek x
