  3. I will be partaking in the annual sponsored dog walk ‘Bark In The Park’ fundraising event in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice this coming Sunday 17th February 2013. I’m not asking for donations - instead I’m hoping to sell both copies of this record and tag the money into my sponsorship fund. £5 all in which includes free P&P within UK. ACT IV “A better man than I / Bless You” (Cub 9150) released October 1967. £5 one copy sold only one left YouTube links added for reference **Better Bless ** It took me a while and a few plays but I’m sure my ears can hear shades of Morris Chestnut in the vocals on this side. What say you? Label: clean Vinyl: nice shine & gloss; light surface marks; plays fine no problems — VG thank you Derek
  4. For your amusement: Part of a letter I received from the states in 1987. Derek
  5. Blimey Wax Museum (owned by Chris Beachley I think) there's a name from the past. I recall working my way steadily through that store in 1990. Wading waist high through boxes and boxes of unsold store stock that he kept in numerous back rooms. Floor to ceiling. Think it took us probably 3 days to go through everything we were allowed to. Just sorta assumed it closed down years ago as the name never seems to crop up in conversations anymore. What say you? Derek
  6. File under: R&B Episode 3 of 3 Duration: 1 hour What is the essence of a great R&B album? Danny Baker celebrates the golden age of the analogue, vinyl LP with soul singer Mica Paris, actor and soul aficianado Martin Freeman, DJ Trevor Nelson and finally an avid member of the internet based soul forum Soul Source. Opinionated and impassioned, Baker and his guests select their favourite soul and funk albums and discuss how the great R&B LPs of the 60s and 70s were a product of their times - and often rapturously received by their audience. derek x
  7. Assuming you haven't already tried this route - whilst browsing I stuck 'Records Stores North Carolina' into Google and this site below was one of many detailed in reply. It might give you a bit of an idea. derek https://www.mapquest.com/maps?cat=Record%20Stores&state=NC#c808c6380f527bf79d4574bd
  8. To the moderators: there's 2 threads currently running about this chap, one in the All About The Soul section and this one. Can/should they be merged? Posted my reply on the other thread yesterday then noticed this one. Copied here to be complete and shine as much light as possible onto the activities of this crook. derek For the last 5 years or so this persons name keeps cropping up over and over with fraud and deception around record sales. His MO unfortunately appears to be the old basic hit & run tactic. He rips some people off through straight forward deception by selling records he hasn’t got, once he’s got the money he submerges back underground. Then after a brief period he resurfaces at a different address under another name. And the whole process starts all over again. Slippery criminals who frequently move about using different aliases can be some of the hardest to nail as its very complex and extremely time consuming for the Police to try piece together some sort of timeline which threads all the crimes together. I’m sure the Police would prefer to apprehend him for a long catalogue of thefts resulting in a harder sentence rather than the odd deception here and there. I’d read the updated thread a few days ago and purely by chance whilst browsing Ebay earlier I noticed a Bobby Kline had recently sold for $1600 in December 2012. What caught my attention was that the seller (12horatio with a 45 feedback rating) was based in Belgium who’d only been a member since January 2012. https://www.ebay.com/...=p2047675.l2557 After looking at the seller’s feedback the pattern sadly becomes clear. 70 positive feedbacks over the last 12 months (40 over the last 6) from sales of cheaper end records and some watches to establish himself and build up feedback to inspire trust. Then after about 12 months of modest trading he suddenly raises the stakes by offering several big ticket items and the New Year triggers off another bout of deception. 6 negative feedbacks outlining 6 deceptions (5 of them record related) which netted him just over $3000. https://feedback.ebay...eedbackAsSeller No doubt he’ll submerge again only to re-surface somewhere again in the near future. And the long process of deception will start again. Derek

Bradford Community Based Radio BCB 106.6FM Part 2 week 2 so fasten your safety belts I store all my 7 inch records at home in those cardboard photocopier paper boxes. With additional internal cardboard strengtheners added, at 10 inches long these boxes are ideal for picking up and moving about records about. And I catalogue my sevens in label order. For tonight’s show I picked up my A-B box which contains the tail end of my A label stuff and the start of everything beginning with B. More by sheer luck than management on going through the box I realised virtually everything in there fell into ‘my top 500 soul singles’ section. Blimey was I spoilt for choice. Can honestly say I really enjoyed everything I played tonight, it was like listening to an hour of my own favourites. Phew . Once more we continue saying it for soul and carry on regardless by playing a weird and wonderful selection of them old soul 45s. If you would like to hear the show live there’s 2 ways to go about it — if you live within say 10 miles of the BD1 based studio tune your radio to the 106.6 frequency on your FM dial and you should be able to get it. Failing that go through the wonders of the World Wide Web on www.bcbradio.co.uk and hear it streamed live out of your PC. You can also listen to some previous shows (up to 2 months maximum) by accessing the BCB home page www.bcbradio.co.uk then clicking on the Listen Again button (top left corner of the page). 14. I’m sure some members on here are aware of the British Record Shop Archive website which is attempting to document and record details of record shops past and present all across the UK. People are actively encouraged to send in their memories and photographs of interest https://www.britishrecordshoparchive.org/ Any way in the near future it’s hoping to make public an exhibition on Dobells Jazz & Folk Record Shop which operated in Charing Cross Road, London between the years 1946 to 1989. The accompaning 2 minute promotional fundraising video is well worth a watch https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/503205883/sound-of-dobells derek

  16. Was a big late Wigan play as far as I recall. Booted in the UK on a red Demand label as Don Varner & General Assembly. Always thought it sounded like a white garagey type thing - still one helluva crunchin' sound though. It's the lovely looking blue issues ya don't often see about. And to remind everybody what all the fuss is about..... derek

  19. From the album: memorabilia, record stores and stuff

Thought I had the full set of anniversary badges from 1 - 19 as I don't think I missed any of them. But on looking in the place where I keep all this sort of stuff this is all I could find. Apologies for the quality of the scan. The surface of most of these enamel badges is slightly convex that's why some of the outer edges of the badges are slightly out of focus. derek

Oops. The 10th anniversary badge is in bottom right corner.

  25. Reading that reminded me of something interesting that I'd forgotten about years ago. Telma & Joyce were actually cousins and initially started out as The Debonaires on Golden World before going onto making a living as backing singers at Motown & Stax. thank you derek
